Chapter 32 Unexpected Encounter
"Madam, the meal is ready," Elizabeth whispered to me after Charlie left.
I nodded and got up to walk to the dining room.
After dinner, I took a shower and went to bed, not wanting to do anything else. Tomorrow, I had to accompany Yolanda to choose a dress, so I needed to rest well.
At this moment, my mother-in-law sent me a message listing various medicinal soup ingredients.
She said, "Rosalie, make Charlie drink this medicinal soup for half a month according to this prescription, twice a day."
My sleepiness disappeared instantly. "Mom, what kind of prescription is this?"
My mother-in-law replied, "It's for improving vigor and replenishing the kidneys. I think Charlie's health is not good. If things continue like this, when will your father and I be able to hold our grandchildren?"
I immediately wanted to refuse because Charlie had no problems at all, and he wouldn't listen to my arrangements.
But after hesitating for a while, I still agreed, "Okay, but I don't know if he will drink it or not."
My mother-in-law sent me a big OK emoji and said, "Don't worry, you just handle the medicine, leave the rest to me."
The next day, I sent Elizabeth to get the medicine. She looked at the long list of ingredients in surprise and asked, "Madam, are you not feeling well?"
I smiled and shook my head, saying, "No, it's for Charlie. My mother-in-law wants me to get this medicinal soup. She wants to have grandchildren sooner."
I didn't hide anything from Elizabeth. This way, whenever she would see Charlie and Lauren being affectionate, she would think of me, the unlucky legal wife.
"Madam, I have a relative who is an experienced doctor. He has a very effective prescription for these matters. Shall I help you with that?" Elizabeth kindly offered.
"Oh, really? Well, if that's the case, would you mind buying some medicines according to his prescription for me? I would like to try it out for two days." I feigned surprise. "If it really works, I'll give you a raise!"
"You don't have to be so polite, madam. I'll go take a look today," Elizabeth replied somewhat bashfully.
"Alright, I have something to attend to today, so I'll be leaving now. I probably won't be back for lunch," I responded.
After that, I left and arrived at the LOVE wedding shop promptly at eight o'clock.
Yolanda was already there waiting for me. She waved when she saw me. "Rose, come over quickly!"
Once we entered the bridal shop, a salesperson poured us each a cup of coffee and prepared some snacks. The shop wasn't very big, and the prices of the wedding dresses inside were average. With Yolanda's status, she should have chosen a high-end bridal shop to have a wedding dress custom-made.
She told me that Arthur couldn't afford such expensive clothes and didn't want Yolanda to spend money, so they decided to choose a more affordable bridal shop.
"Miss Davis, please follow me to try on the gowns," the salesperson said to Yolanda.
Yolanda stood up and went to the fitting room, while I wandered around the bridal shop, looking at the variety of beautiful wedding dresses. I felt a bit uneasy inside.
Wedding dresses hold extraordinary meaning for a woman, and the day I chose a wedding dress, I was criticized by Charlie from top to bottom.
I was lost in these bitter memories when the bridal shop's door opened once again, and Lauren and two other girls walked in. They were chatting happily, their voices cheerful and clear.
"Mrs. Harrison?" Lauren's eyes widened when she saw me. She had a look of surprise and joy on her face. "What a coincidence! What are you doing here?"
At that moment, Yolanda came out wearing a beautiful wedding gown. She asked me, "Rose, how does this one look?"
It was a dark red dress, elegant and dignified, but the color was a bit too dark. After a moment of thought, I said, "Do you have something brighter? This one looks a bit tacky."
The salesperson quickly replied, "Yes, we do. Miss Davis, you can come with me to see other styles and try them on."
Yolanda nodded and followed the salesperson to continue choosing gowns.
Only then did I answer Lauren, "I'm here helping a friend pick a wedding dress. And you all are..."
The other two girls were about the same age as Lauren, and they were holding hands, appearing to have a close relationship.
"Our drama club is rehearsing a performance, and my character needs a wedding dress, so I brought my roommates along to help me pick one to rent," Lauren answered with a beaming smile.
"Alright, go ahead and choose," I said softly.
"Great!" Lauren and her two friends went to select the wedding dress, while I sat on a sofa, flipping through bridal magazines and covertly keeping an eye on Lauren.
After a while, Lauren and her friends started inquiring with the salesperson about the rental prices for the wedding dresses.
When they learned it would cost one thousand dollars for a day's rental, their expressions changed a bit.
They looked at each other, and after a few seconds, Lauren asked somewhat embarrassedly, "Can we get a little discount? We only need to rent it for about two days and promise not to dirty or damage it!"
"Please help us out. We're all students, and this is for a drama performance. The drama club doesn't have enough funds," another girl pleaded.
This put the salesperson in a difficult position. She wasn't the boss and couldn't make the final decision. All she could do was politely suggest that Lauren and her friends choose a cheaper dress.
But Lauren had set her eyes on this particular one and was reluctant to change it.
Watching the three of them reluctantly return the wedding dress, I stood up and walked over. "Lauren, you can take it. I'll come and settle the payment later."
"No, Mrs. Harrison!" Lauren quickly shook her head upon hearing that. "We'll go choose a cheaper one, it's fine!"
"If you like this one, then don't leave it. Changing to something else will always leave you with regrets. Once you've set your heart on something, it won't change," I said, conveying profound wisdom.
It's not just about wedding dresses; it's the same with choosing partners. Once you've found true love, everyone else is a compromise.
Ignoring Lauren's objections, I swiped my card directly and instructed the salesperson to pack up the wedding dress for her. "You can return it to me when your club's funds are sufficient."
Lauren's two roommates were also amazed by my generosity and repeatedly thanked me.
With watery eyes filled with embarrassment, Lauren blushed and whispered, "Thank you, Mrs. Harrison. I will repay you."
"No need. Don't worry about it." I smiled even more gracefully.
After Lauren and her friends left, Yolanda finally chose a lovely dress, a bright red, sleeveless, long gown that fell to mid-calf, revealing slender ankles. The waist was adorned with delicate embroidery, beneath which was a layer of thin gauze, though its quality wasn't the best.
Yolanda twirled around in front of the mirror. "How does it look? I think this one is great!"
"It's perfect! The color suits you," I complimented.
"Okay, then I'll take this one!" Yolanda immediately made the decision and had me take a photo, which she sent to Arthur.
Two minutes later, a look of happiness appeared on Yolanda's face as she happily said to the salesperson, "Please pack it up for me, thank you!"
And thus, the journey of choosing dresses concluded. Yolanda wanted to treat me to a meal, so I chose a Japanese restaurant, the same one where the dispute with Lauren had occurred last time.
Inside the restaurant, Yolanda looked at the sushi, hot pot, and sashimi that were brought to the table, and her face drooped. "Rose, why did you decide to come here? I feel like the ingredients here are not very fresh."
For an average spending of less than a hundred dollars per person at a small restaurant, one can't expect the quality to be equivalent to a thousand-dollar per person restaurant.
I was just curious. Would Charlie accompany Lauren to eat these things in the future? It's not like we could expect Lauren to instantly transform into an elegant noble, right?
"I heard this place has good business, so I wanted to try it," I said as I picked up a piece of sushi.
I put it in my mouth, and it actually tasted quite good.
