Chapter 55 Showdown
"No, you're exaggerating. Do you think I would deceive you?" I explained, "Elizabeth started working as a maid in our house before you even knew Lauren. I'm not God, I can't predict the future."
Charlie's face softened a bit, and he fell silent. The air in the hospital room seemed to be sucked out along with the silence.
He has always had a strong aura, especially when he's in a bad mood. This doubles the sense of oppression.
I also fell into silence. Now everything is out in the open, and anything else we say seems a bit redundant.
Finally, Charlie stood up. "Don't have any contact with her in the future. Don't investigate her or get close to her. Let's pretend that nothing happened."
"How can we pretend that nothing happened?" I spoke up, my tone already turning cold, looking at Charlie with indifference in my eyes.
"What have you taken me for all this time? Am I a fool or a lunatic? Even the things that have hurt me, should I pretend they never happened? Do you think that's possible?"
"So what do you want?" Charlie stood by the bedside, looking down at me from above like a god, as if I was a devout follower who had worshipped him for ten years.
I sarcastically asked, "Charlie, did you make concessions for her at the Second Chemical Plant project? Is that why you personally went to negotiate and ended up getting me injured too?"
"Yeah." Charlie was straightforward, never beating around the bush when it came to hurting others.
"Now that you know everything, why don't we get a divorce? Let's part ways amicably. I will give up my position for her, without any complaints." I brought up the topic of divorce again.
In the past life, Charlie only asked for a divorce after pursuing Lauren for about a year. Now, things have changed, and he might decide to divorce me earlier.
Tina was right, this man really knows how to make me sad and miserable!
I want to distance myself from this disaster and embark on a better life.
Charlie's demeanor suddenly cooled, and I started to hallucinate, feeling like he was standing in an icy, snowy landscape, with his gaze turned into icy arrows.
At that moment, Dylan appeared at the door of the hospital room. He furrowed his brows and looked at me and Charlie, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
Charlie also noticed his presence and said, in a sinister tone, "Don't dream about it until I bring it up myself."
After saying that, he turned and left. As he passed by Dylan, he stopped and said, "There's a gathering tonight. Care to join us for a drink?"
"Sure, just send me the address," Dylan nodded.
Both of them were of similar height, both very striking men. They looked even more pleasing standing together.
After Charlie left, I joked with Dylan, "Dylan, you've never had a girlfriend, are you into men? How about helping me pursue Charlie and breaking him up with Lauren? I'll give you a Maserati as a reward!"
Dylan glanced at me, and I immediately shut my mouth.
"Did you talk to him?" He sat down in the spot Charlie had just occupied and asked in a calm voice.
"Yeah, about the Second Chemical Plant incident. He investigated both Isaac and Max and found out that Elizabeth, our maid, is Isaac's wife and Lauren's mother." I sighed. "Unfortunately, he still didn't agree to the divorce."
"If he's just playing around with Lauren, would you forgive him?" Dylan scrutinized me.
I burst into laughter. "Haha, do you think I'm a saint? And do you think he's just playing around with Lauren?"
Dylan stayed silent. I didn't know what he was thinking. I was actually wondering myself, why hasn't Dylan fallen in love with Lauren yet? That shouldn't be right. How come Dylan hasn't met Lauren in person and fallen for her yet?
I have to find a way to make sure Dylan interacts with Lauren as soon as possible.
At that moment, Dylan received a phone call and had to go back to work. I lay on the bed, contemplating how to create a suitable reason for him to meet Lauren and gradually develop an interest in her.
Once Charlie has a love rival, and the rival happens to be his childhood friend, he will start paying attention to Lauren.
Will he agree to divorce me then?
During my hospital stay, I pondered this question countless times until the day of my discharge when Dylan suddenly found me and told me something.
It was about Charlie meeting Dylan and their friends along with Lauren.
I knew what this meant very well. I had been married to him for five years, and he had never taken me out to eat with Dylan and the others.
"Oh, I see," I calmly nodded.
"Not even a bit sad?" Dylan raised an eyebrow.
"The most useless emotion is sadness." I patted Dylan's arm confidently. "Thanks, I'll treat you to a meal next time."
After saying that, I went to the car. My mother was still waiting for me.
My mom looked at Dylan outside the car window and asked, "What did Dylan say to you?"
"Nothing, just congratulated me on being discharged." I hugged my mother's arm, rested my head on her shoulder, and then instructed Tim, "Tim, let's return to Maple Villa."
"Yes, madam," Tim answered, and the car smoothly started and left the hospital.
After returning to Maple Villa, I invited my mother to have lunch at home, but she insisted on going back, saying that my father would also be home today.
I teased, "Mom, you and Dad have been married for so many years, and you're still so clingy? Before, when he came back from business trips, I never saw you this anxious. What's going on? Are you rekindling your young love?"
A smile flickered across my mother's face as she playfully scolded, "Dare you joke about me and your dad?"
"No, fine, I'll have Tim take you back!" I raised my hand to block my mother's attempt to hit me, and laughed.
"Alright, take care of yourself and get plenty of rest," my mother instructed me before leaving.
After Tim left with my mother, I sat alone in the living room, lost in thought. I wondered what the current situation was with Elizabeth. Did she find out about Lauren and Jason's breakup? Did she notice that Charlie was pursuing Lauren?
I was thinking too much, and my head throbbed slightly. I went upstairs to rest without even having lunch.
Due to my injury, Charlie granted me two weeks of sick leave. After being discharged, I had been staying at Maple Villa to recuperate. Besides meeting up with Jane and the others, I had hardly any other activities.
The demolition issue of Second Chemical Plant was resolved smoothly within these two weeks. In the end, just like in the previous life, Charlie made a compromise.
I suppose his relationship with Lauren has taken a big step forward!
Dylan hasn't had any contact with me recently either. I suggested meeting for a meal, but he declined, citing a busy schedule.
Perhaps Charlie's increased interactions with Lauren made him realize her charm, and his interest shifted. Naturally, he has no time to listen to my complaints.
