Chapter 40 Your Method Won't Work
I hurriedly arrived at the hospital and booked an appointment specifically with Dylan.
After waiting in line for quite a while, it was finally my turn. Dylan glanced at me and then pointed to a nearby chair. "Have a seat for a while."
"Oh, alright." I obediently sat down next to him, while Dylan called in the next patient.
Dylan was very serious in his work. He was wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses that made him look cultured. As I listened to him communicating with the patients, I became more convinced that he didn't need to compete with Charlie for Lauren.
He deserved a better woman. Why did he end up in such a sorry state?
After ten minutes, Dylan said to me, "You can leave now."
Without asking any further questions, I got up and left.
I called Tim and, half an hour later, he arrived to pick me up at the hospital's entrance. After getting in the car, he asked concernedly, "Madam, are you feeling unwell?"
"My heart feels uncomfortable," I casually replied.
"Did you get it checked?" Tim asked again.
"It's probably because I didn't get enough rest," I replied casually.
Tim nodded, "Then, madam, you should pay more attention to your health."
Indeed, I needed to pay attention to my health. Otherwise, after finally gaining a few pounds, I would just lose them again. My ideal weight for my height is around 120 pounds. Even if slightly thinner, it should still be above 100 pounds. But now, I'm only 90 pounds.
The first thing I did when I returned to Maple Villa was to instruct Elizabeth to prepare lunch. Her expression seemed a bit odd, and before she went to cook, she whispered to me, "Madam, Mr. Bennett is upstairs."
"When did he come back?" I was somewhat surprised.
"He came back last night and asked me why you weren't at home. He seemed to be in a bad mood," Elizabeth replied.
"Alright, I see." I waved my hand and then went upstairs.
Charlie was working in the study. The documents on his desk were far from tidy, but he paid no attention to it and always managed to find the information he wanted with ease. The smell of smoke lingered in the study, and he still had a half-burnt cigarette between his fingers.
I coughed a couple of times due to the smoke. He looked up at me, his eyes sharp and icy.
"So, you finally decided to come back?" Charlie extinguished the cigarette, his voice cold and harsh.
"I didn't expect you to be back last night." I found it strange. Shouldn't Charlie have gone to see Lauren?
"Then where do you think I should have gone?" Charlie retorted.
Anywhere would have been fine, but it was odd for him to stay at home.
I shook my head. "I don't know. You go ahead and continue working. I'll go take a shower. We'll be having dinner soon."
Before I could step out of the study, Charlie spoke again, his tone containing a hint of jealousy that I wasn't sure about. "Where did you spend the night?"
This question made me inexplicably guilty. Although Dylan and I had no relationship whatsoever, he had taken me to a hotel when I was drunk and even cooperated with me in keeping some secrets from Charlie.
Considering all that, I couldn't really claim innocence. At least, we were on the same side.
"At a hotel," I muttered.
"Alone?" Charlie's gaze grew even deeper.
I nodded; it was indeed just me sleeping.
Charlie's expression relaxed slightly, and he continued to bury himself in his work, ignoring me.
Sometimes, I wonder if I'm reincarnated as a goddess sent to repay Charlie, because otherwise, how could I have endured and persisted for ten years?
After leaving the study, I quickly took a shower and then went downstairs to have dinner.
Charlie was already sitting at the dining table, silently eating without bothering to wait for me. I still wasn't used to having a meal alone with him. The atmosphere was oppressive and silent, with nothing to say.
At that moment, his phone rang, and I caught a quick glimpse. I couldn't help but feel speechless.
Why does Lauren always choose to call when Charlie and I are together? If I hadn't been reborn, I would have suspected that she had installed some sort of monitoring next to Charlie.
Lauren was very excited on the other end of the phone, but I could only hear her voice without understanding the content.
Charlie furrowed his brow and had a sinister expression. "I said, if you need money, you can come to me. How much do you want? Tell me."
That sentence made me pause for a moment, feeling as if I had returned to my previous life. Charlie had asked me, "How much do you want to divorce? Speak up!"
Similar words, entirely different meanings.
After Lauren said something else, she hung up the phone.
Charlie threw his phone aside, clearly losing his appetite. Elizabeth was wiping the table nearby. I'm not sure if she noticed us.
"What did you do?" I curiously asked.
"Eat your meal," Charlie glanced at me and said in a grumpy tone.
"Did you mess up someone's work?" I wasn't afraid at all, but rather made a fairly accurate guess. "So she called to blame and accuse you, right?"
This is Charlie's way of doing things. She is just a college girl. He doesn't care about respect. That's something to worry about later. It's only when he truly falls in love that he will genuinely consider it.
Right now, he just sees Lauren as something unattainable.
Charlie's face darkened. "Do you want me to praise you for understanding me too well?"
No need for that.
I smiled superficially. "No, I just think your method won't work. I heard she's a talented student from New York University. While her family background may not match yours, she is excellent in her own way, more so than many ordinary people. Such a girl has a strong sense of dignity and won't cling to you just for money. You should consider a different approach to pursue her."
"It seems like you're hoping I'll pursue her," Charlie narrowed his eyes, his mocking smile making my heart skip a beat.
"Haven't I mentioned divorce to you before? I'm serious." I stared directly into Charlie's eyes, indifferent and unbothered.
"Still 3%?" Charlie raised an eyebrow.
"No, make it 5%." I extended all five fingers, a radiant smile on my face. "How about that? Deal?"
Charlie gazed at me. Although the smile on his lips didn't vanish, I could sense his sarcasm. He shifted his gaze away, continued eating a few more bites, and then got up and left.
I couldn't guess whether he agreed or not.
After Charlie left, Yolanda called me and said, "Rose, make sure to prepare everything today. We'll meet at the airport tomorrow. I've already bought the plane tickets for you."
"Alright, what time?" I asked.
"I sent it to you on Whatsapp. Check it out," Yolanda replied.
After ending the call, I opened Whatsapp to check. We had to board early in the morning.
It's good to clear my mind a bit. After finishing my meal, I went upstairs and packed my things. I had to sleep early tonight and wake up early tomorrow.
I didn't tell Charlie or my parents about going to the Maldives with Yolanda. The next day, I went straight to the airport and met up with Yolanda and the others.
"Oh Lord, please grant me a wonderful encounter when we arrive there!" After boarding the plane, Tina lay on the comfortable and spacious seat, praying devoutly.
