Chapter 37 The Girls Are Shocked!
The night passed without any incident. Ever since I wished Charlie well, he hadn't spoken a word to me.
When the alarm went off, I groggily got up, only to find Charlie already awake, dressed in a suit and tie.
Charlie could be considered a tough person, highly proactive, and extremely disciplined. I had hardly ever seen him sleeping in. As long as there was business to attend to, he would never delay.
I glanced at him, noticing that he was not only tall but also had a larger frame than the average man. He had solid, muscular muscles, appeared thin when dressed, but well-built when shirtless.
"What are you looking at? Hurry up and change," Charlie said, glancing at me after finishing his tie.
"Oh." I hurried into the closet and picked out a white off-shoulder gown with a fishtail design. It was slightly tight, but very elegant and graceful without stealing the limelight.
After changing into a pair of nude pink high-heeled sandals from VALENTINO, I went to the dressing table to apply makeup. Charlie had long left the bedroom.
Today was Yolanda's show, so I didn't need to look too stunning. A simple and light makeup would do.
I came downstairs. Elizabeth had prepared the breakfast, and Charlie was already seated at the table, sipping coffee and eating eggs.
"Good morning, madam," Elizabeth nodded at me.
"Morning, Elizabeth. We're attending a friend's engagement celebration today and won't be back for lunch. No need to prepare food for us," I informed Elizabeth as I sat down.
"Yes," Elizabeth acknowledged.
When I was halfway through my meal, Charlie had already finished. He wiped his mouth clean and stood up, saying, "I'll wait for you in the car."
"Okay," I replied, but I couldn't help but feel skeptical. Did he really want me to ride in his car with him?
Five minutes later, I hurriedly got into Charlie's car, and we drove toward the Cloud Hotel.
The engagement celebration was scheduled to begin at twelve noon, but knowing Yolanda, she would probably start late. I planned to arrive fashionably late with Charlie.
Yolanda's situation definitely requires prompt action. As for Charlie, I don't know why he's so eager.
Jane and Tina arrived around the same time as us, dressed in a simple and elegant manner like me. We had this understanding among us. But Yolanda, who will be wearing a beautiful red dress, has yet to arrive.
When Jane saw Charlie and me together, she had a look of disbelief that lasted a second but displayed three different expressions.
Shock, confusion, and speechlessness. Tina was slightly better, but her eyes widened too.
"I'll go up first." Charlie's face turned slightly cold upon seeing Jane. They were never close, especially after the incident at the bar and Clint's fight at Roof Club. Their relationship had completely frozen.
"Alright," I nodded. Yolanda's engagement banquet was to be held on the eighth floor. It's better for Charlie to go straight there.
After Charlie left, Jane quickly rushed over and shook my shoulders, asking, "Rose, what are you doing?"
"What sort of development is this?" Tina exclaimed with an open mouth.
I couldn't help but laugh and cry. After breaking free from Jane's grip, I explained, "The Davis family also invited Charlie. After all, we are still in the midst of our marriage, and it wouldn't be right for us to come separately, right?"
It wouldn't be good if anybody found out, unless we made it clear that we were getting a divorce, which wasn't too far off.
Jane scoffed, "Don't let his good looks tempt you."
Putting that aside, the moment Charlie stepped out of the car, it felt as if a gigantic spotlight suddenly turned on. His radiance was irresistible, and anyone with eyes and normal aesthetics couldn't help but steal more glances at him.
When I first saw Charlie at seventeen, he was already incredibly handsome. Standing in front of me, it felt like he was from a completely different world than everyone else.
"Alright, you can remind me at any time," I replied with a smile.
"Of course, I will remind you!" Jane hooked her arm through mine and pulled Tina with her. The three of us entered the hotel lobby and took the elevator to the banquet hall.
An engagement banquet is different from a wedding banquet. It's smaller in scale and doesn't have many formalities. Its primary purpose is to invite close friends, family, and important people to have a meal.
The hotel staff were busy setting up the venue, with a big screen displaying joyful captions of Yolanda and Arthur's engagement, surrounded by red hearts.
"You're here!" Yolanda happily ran toward us, holding Arthur's hand.
Wearing a bright red dress with her hair elegantly styled, Yolanda looked beautiful and exuded a pink bubble of happiness. Jane couldn't help but exclaim, "So this is what love feels like!"
"Why don't you find yourself a serious boyfriend too?" Yolanda playfully tapped Jane's butt. "With your hot figure, so many men would be captivated by you. Finding a boyfriend should be simple."
Jane raised her chin proudly and said, "Men don't deserve to confine me!"
I sat down with a smile and looked around. Many people had already arrived, and they weren't just here for the engagement banquet; they had another purpose, which was networking. So, they came early to have time for a chat.
To my surprise, Dylan, Clint, and Michael were also here today, sitting and chatting with Charlie.
"Isn't this Mr. Bennett? You are here today too!" A woman in a black sequin dress approached Charlie, leaning forward with a V-neck that revealed ample cleavage. She had a radiant and charming smile. "Long time no see!"
After taking a glance at the woman, Charlie furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and asked, "Who are you?"
The woman's smile stiffened. She was clearly taken aback. Clint quickly spoke up, "Charlie, she is Hannah. You even invested in her movie!"
He expressed it so tactfully, but wasn't she one of Charlie's former scandals?
After hearing the name "Hannah," Charlie's furrowed brow relaxed, and he smiled casually. "Oh, yes, it's been a long time indeed."
"Let's have dinner together sometime." Hannah forced a smile and quickly left after saying this.
Jane was also observing the situation with Charlie and shook her head. "Look at your lover, Rose. Only you can tolerate it for five years. If I were in your place, I would have divorced him a long time ago!"
Tina chimed in, "Yes, being handsome doesn't make you invincible. Disregarding marriage is shameful!"
As Charlie's gaze turned toward our direction, we exchanged a glance and tacitly diverted our attention.
"Alright, today is Yolanda's engagement celebration. Stop talking about me!" I stretched my neck and looked around. "Yolanda, where are your parents and your future in-laws?"
Arthur was nowhere to be found either.
Yolanda turned her head to look. "My parents went downstairs to greet relatives. Arthur's parents arrived earlier, but they were just here. Why did they suddenly disappear? Let me go check."
"Go ahead, go ahead." I waved my hand.
