Chapter 44 Awakening With A Single Word
I followed behind the two of them and got into Dylan's car. Jason and I sat in the back seat, with me being responsible for keeping him steady so he wouldn't slump over.
Dylan asked me, "What's his home address?"
I shook my head and replied, "I don't know. Let's just find a room nearby to rest."
"Mm," Dylan responded, then drove toward the nearest hotel. Throughout the ride, I couldn't help feeling restless, as if I had been caught red-handed.
Once we arrived at the hotel, Dylan used his ID to book a room for Jason to stay.
After getting Jason settled, I heaved a sigh of relief and said to Dylan, "Dylan, could you please take me back to the bar? My car is there."
"Let me just take you home directly. You've been drinking, and it's not safe to drive under the influence." Dylan glanced at me, his gaze calm and unruffled. Such a good-looking face, why doesn't he ever smile?
No wonder he and Charlie are good friends. Both of them always wear serious expressions.
But Dylan was right, I couldn't drive after drinking. Instead of asking Tim to come and pick me up, it was better to hitch a ride and have Tim retrieve my car in the morning.
I thanked him gratefully and said, "Alright, thank you!"
Back in Dylan's car, I sat in the passenger seat. He drove smoothly, and I almost dozed off in the gentle swaying.
"Why did you go drinking with him?" Dylan suddenly spoke up, instantly snapping me awake.
"He called me, saying he had a fight with his girlfriend and wanted to meet up," I rubbed my tired eyes and replied wearily.
"Do you think that was appropriate?" Dylan asked again, his words tinged with reproach.
I smiled and said, "What's inappropriate about it? My husband is pursuing his girlfriend, and I'm responsible for comforting him. Seems fair enough."
This remark seemed to push Dylan's bottom line. He turned the steering wheel and parked by the roadside, staring at me with a stern expression. "Rosalie, how did you become like this? You used to love Charlie so much, and I really admired you for it. But now? Are you getting yourself involved just for the sake of revenge against Charlie?"
I was shocked. The things I used to do actually earned Dylan's admiration?
Well, it made sense. As a man who had never had any romantic experiences, he must have been quite impressed by my silent dedication and efforts. After all, he was completely different from me.
"I've said it before, instead of trying to persuade me, why don't you go persuade Charlie to divorce me immediately? I won't ask for a single penny. If I hesitate even for a second, I'm a pig!" I became agitated as Dylan had no idea about what I had experienced in my past life. He always managed to trigger my angriest emotions.
And it didn't stop there. I was almost suffocated with anger, so I spoke rapidly, "If you think it's inappropriate for me to have any involvement with Jason, then do you think it's appropriate for us to spend time together repeatedly? Is it appropriate for you to help me hide things from Charlie?"
If everything needs to be judged on appropriateness, then in this world, there is no perfect person.
Sure enough, Dylan's expression turned even colder. In his pitch-black pupils, it seemed as if they were freezing, and it was clear that he was angry.
Under the influence of alcohol, I felt my courage swelling, and my voice grew louder. "What if you're angry? Things should be judged by right or wrong, and love should follow a certain order. Charlie was the one who wronged me first, so you can't blame me for not treating him well!"
"What am I blaming you for?" Dylan asked me with some annoyance.
"Blaming me for getting close to Jason, blaming me for not continuing to please Charlie. Charlie has so many women around him, am I the only one missing? I suppose his family needs a talking watchdog, right?" I accused him, letting out all the emotions that I had been keeping inside in front of Dylan.
After all, he was the only one who knew all my secrets, except for the fact that I had been reborn.
He was my ally in the previous life, but I didn’t expect him to be my ally in this life as well. Fate is truly strong.
Dylan was quite angered by me. He took a deep breath, calming himself down a bit before responding, "I'm not blaming you for these things. I actually think it's a good thing that you've made the decision to divorce Charlie. But you should be aware of who Charlie is. If he finds out that you've known Jason for a long time, and that you also know Lauren, do you think he will easily let you off? If you want to leave him, don't sow the seeds of trouble for yourself in the future, understand?!"
This was the first time Dylan had said so much in one breath to me. After he finished speaking, he clenched his teeth, looking frustrated.
I was stunned for a moment, as if he made sense.
Since divorce was an inevitable outcome, all the foreshadowing I was currently setting up would become reasons for Charlie's revenge once he found out.
I had always been thinking about digging a pit for Charlie, making his path with Lauren more difficult and full of obstacles, but I forgot that I was also digging a pit for myself.
"Have you truly let go of Charlie? Or have you not truly understood your own heart? Are you doing all this to smoothly divorce Charlie, or are you looking for reasons to continue entangling yourself?" Dylan's words, each one of them, stabbed at my heart, causing me pain and embarrassment.
I fell silent. To be honest, it was difficult for me to answer these questions.
"I don't want to continue entangling myself, but Jason is the only person who can bring some balance to my mind. What should I do?" After a while, I looked at Dylan in confusion.
I had lost myself for a whole ten years for Charlie. Even if I had a second chance at life, I couldn't find my footing for the time being. Perhaps I could only truly find myself after the divorce.
"Find something to do and make yourself feel more fulfilled," Dylan suggested.
This reminded me of my father-in-law's suggestion. Maybe I could really try joining the Bennett Group. Leaving aside other reasons, if I were to divorce Charlie in the future and get a stake in the company, I would have a better chance of managing it well.
I nodded thoughtfully as Dylan continued driving toward Maple Villa.
Upon returning home, I sincerely thanked Dylan from the bottom of my heart and watched him leave before turning around.
"Ah!" Just as I took a few steps, Charlie appeared out of nowhere, startling me to the point where my heart almost stopped, and I let out a scream.
Charlie was wearing a black shirt with a slightly loosened burgundy tie, and his jacket hung on his elbow. There was a strong smell of alcohol lingering on him as he stared at me.
I thought he was going to question why Dylan drove me back, but to my surprise, he didn't say anything. Instead, he turned and walked toward the front door.
I followed behind him, watching his tall figure. The physique of a mature man was more solid and charming than his youth. Many times, I wanted to embrace him and feel the warmth of his embrace, but I had never been able to fulfill that wish.
If it weren't for the potent medicine Elizabeth had given me, Charlie and I would have remained sober until divorce.
