Chapter Thirteen
The ride to school was only about thirty minutes. But, it was excruciating as hell.
Of course, what would one expect it to be in a car along with two people we are not close with? Even John could sense the strange feeling as he kept to himself too.
Kevin seemed aware of this too as I saw him turn his face to look at my brother when he reached a red light. He pulled in the brake and faced him slightly.
"Hi. I'm Kevin." He announced as he started at Jasper.
Jasper seemed surprised for a moment. But, he soon regained his senses and returned the greeting.
"Hi. Jasper."
My brother had suddenly turned quiet and calm. And, it was amusing as I knew what type of person he truly was.
It was amusing whenever people I knew to be crazy as fuck are humble and calm in front of strangers.
"Hi, Chelsea." Kevin turned his focus on me. He flashed me a toothy grin and said, "We already know each other. So no need for too much introduction. We are in the same grade."
He nudged his head in his sister's direction and started, "You and Kayla are in the same class."
Kayla looked at me for the first time since I settled down a seat away from her with my brother as a barrier between us. She didn't smile as Kevin did nor was she jovial.
She was quite straightforward as she spoke, "Kayla."
I also nodded back. "Chelsea."
Kevin seemed pleased by the progress as he looked at us discreetly after the green light was on and he stepped on the pedal, driving us off.
It was about twenty minutes later when the car pulled into a driveway. We were quite early. Before we even stepped out of the car, I could see the main building of the school.
It was a tall structure about four floors high. Although it was not as tall and luxurious as my former school, it wa still quite impressive. Kevin fully parked the car into one of the spaces marked for cars and he turned off the ignition.
Everyone grabbed their bags on cue as we stepped out of the car at the same time. Jasper was with John's bag and he immediately held the boy's hand as he waited for me to get down.
When Kevin got down, Jasper looked over at him. "Thanks for the ride."
Kevin as expected shook his head at him and said, "It is nothing."
And, there was nothing afterward. Jasper turned to me. "You can find your way around, right? I got to drop John at school before they ring the bell."
I immediately nodded at him. " Yeah, I can. Go drop him off."
"Ask around if you are unable to get to class. Or, wait for me to return." He seemed a little reluctant and wary.
Just then, Kevin's voice popped in. "Don't worry, Jasper. She's in safe hands. We are in the same grade and as I heard from Mr. Smith. Chelsea is in the same class as Kayla."
He pointed toward Kayla and everyone looked at her. She was standing by the side, leaning in the car and watching us. She didn't seem irritated it annoyed.
But instead, she seemed bored.
Jasper looked at me when he heard what Kevin said and he gave me a look I figured he was asking if I was okay with going with them.
And, I nodded, shrugging as I told him. "Don't worry about me. Go drop John off in class."
That was all he needed as he soon turned toward the side building that indicated it was the elementary school and left with John. After he was gone, I strapped my bag behind my back and turned to my two guides for the day.
Kevin was quick to do the same and we were soon approaching the school building. The school was quite beautiful. It had a good architectural design and it was also artistic.
Several students were trooping in like us as we stepped into the narrow hallway. It was crowded and there was no way we were not brushing our bodies against one another as everyone hurried off to their respective destinations.
I was nearly pushed by a boy rushing as he wanted to pass by me. Thankfully, Kevin reached out to pull my arm and I narrowly avoided landing on my butt in a sorry state.
When the situation had become less rowdy and we could finally walk to class with easy steps, Kevin said to me, "It's usually boorish like this on Mondays. You'll get used to it as time goes."
I smiled upon hearing this and turned to him, nodding. "Alright. Thank you, Kevin."
He seemed pleased to hear me call his name. It was quite amusing though as I could tell he was trying to get cozy with me. He was indeed a nice guy. Not only was he good-looking, but he also seemed to have good character and was easy with people.
But well, he was not my type. Moreover, I just got my sorry ass jilted a few weeks ago. I was not ready to get another one dumped in my face anytime soon.
Kayla was silent all through while Kevin and I spoke occasionally as we approached the class. I could tell that, unlike her brother, she was reserved.
But as we reached the door of a class, she turned to look at me and stated, "You should report to the teacher first before coming into the class."
"Oh," I muttered, realizing that she was talking to me and that I had indeed skipped that part. Kevin also seemed to have forgotten too as he gasped.
"The teacher's office is there," Kayla mentioned as she pointed to the adjoining room right beside the class.
And without another word, she turned and entered the class.
Kevin also turned to me and added, "Yeah. Go and report to the teacher and she'll put you through the list of the things you need to do."
I nodded. I knew all about all these formalities.
"Thanks."
"It's nothing." He smiled as he began to walk towards his class with his back facing the way. "See you later."
I nodded and he smiled even wider before making a turn and soon disappearing from my line of sight.
