Chapter Sixteen

I sat down in Ms. Adams's office during lunch with my arms crossed as I expected her explanation as to why such behaviors are allowed in the school. And why I had to be the one to compromise.

Ms. Adams closed up the folder in front of her. She began, "Let me start off with an apology as it skipped my mind to warn you about sitting beside Torin."

I didn't reply so she went on.

"Torin is a special student in the school, " She said. "As I said, he is very eccentric so it is best to avoid him."

" Eccentric?" I could not help but say. "Surely, there is no problem in being eccentric but he was threatening me. He seems dangerous for all I know."

To my surprise, Ms. Adams didn't seem bothered. Instead, she said, "He is on government support and was put in the school by the government himself. He is a very special case and I must warn you that he is even more important to the government than any other student in the school."

" The government?"

"As I said, he is a special case, " she asserted. "So just avoid him like the other students do and don't provoke him. It won't end will if you don't."

I was speechless. Even in my previous school meant for only socialites, there wasn't a privilege of this level.

Ms. Adams looked at me when she saw that I didn't reply. "Did you hear what I said, Chelsea?"

I snapped back to reality and nodded positively. "Yes, I did."

" Good."

Ms. Adams then pulled out a folder from her desk and placed it in front of me. "This is the list of everything you will need to do in the school and your registration details."

I looked at the blue folder for a moment before picking them up. Ms. Adams smiled. " That's all. Off you go now."

I didn't even bother to wait any longer and left her office. The class was quite deserted when I returned. It seemed some of them had gone to the cafeteria for lunch.

But Kayla hadn't gone. Instead, she sat at her desk with her hand still laid over the table like earlier and a pair of headphones now pulled across her ears.

When I settled in, she seemed to sense movement and looked at me for a moment. Then, she retracted her gaze and laid her head back on the table.

I also didn't pay attention to her knowing that she wasn't the type to talk and I didn't expect her to take the initiative and talk to me.

I was skimming through the folder in my hand when she suddenly raised her head and said, "Ms. Adams explained to you, right?"

I didn't think she was talking to me at first and subconsciously turned around to look at who she was talking to. But there was no one else around us and she was looking at me.

"Sorry?" I asked as I had forgotten what she said earlier.

She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. I could not help but notice how smooth, long and soft they seemed.

"She warned you to stay away from Torin, right? Ms. Adams, I mean."

I nodded. " Yes."

"Listen to her, " Kayla said. "He is not someone to be provoked."

I was quiet for a minute. Although I could not understand why everyone was so adamant that I stayed away from him, I nodded at her to show that I understood. It was rare for her to speak to me not to mention that she seemed concerned.

Without another word, she turned around and laid her head back on the desk.

I looked at her quietly. I could not tell if she was antisocial or if she just could not be bothered to deal with people.

But, since she had taken the initiative to speak to me, I didn't mind repaying the favor. Especially since she was the only person I was familiar with in the class.

I knocked on her desk and declared, "I'm going to the cafeteria. Do you need me to get something for you?"

She removed her headphones and looked at me. "What did you say?"

I repeated my words and she was quiet for a moment. Eventually, she nodded and said, "Just get me a hamburger and two packets of milkshake. Thanks."

I smiled. "No problem."

I stood up and left for the cafeteria. It was quite crowded and all the seats were already taken when I got there. So, I brought our meals to the class as takeaways

"Thanks," Kayla said as she sat up and collected her takeaway from me.

I sat beside her and places my food on the table watching her quietly as she took off her headphones. I was just curious; the day I went over to their house, she seemed quite vibrant and sassy too.

Maybe she just didn't like talking to me.

Sensing my gaze, she looked at me and raises an eyebrow. "What?"

I was immediately embarrassed being caught staring and I quickly looked away, taking out my food.

"What did you want to ask?" She asked me, surprisingly.

I pursed my lips for a moment. "You are allowed to use headphones?"

She nodded. "As long as it's not while class is ongoing."

" Oh, okay." I had nothing else to say to her.

But she went on. "It's prohibited to eat in class though, so eat quickly so we can dispose of it."

I was surprised to hear this. But, I didn't waste time and quickly focused on my meal, munching with big mouthfuls.
