Chapter 19: Don’t Trust Him

-Serena-

I pulled on the handcuffs hoping to slide free of them or maybe even break the pole, but I simply wasn’t created as strong as these animals, and the metal just cut into my skin. It made me bleed a little, which helped lubricate my wrists, but it still didn’t quite get me loose.

“Come on!” I said as I pulled harder. “Come on!”

Suddenly the door opened, and I looked behind me, seeing Rogan had appeared. He had been gone for quite a while, and he looked tired, as he entered the room.

“What happens now?” I asked.

Rogan didn’t say anything as he walked over to me, looking down at my bleeding wrists, and shaking his head.

“You really thought that would work?” he asked.

I shrugged, and then he started to release me, taking the cuffs, and placing them on the nightstand, before he grabbed my arm.

“Come,” he said and led me into a bathroom, placing me by the sink, and finding a small towel that he got a little wet before he started to dry off the blood.

I stood there confused. Why help me? Why even care if I was bleeding? This mate thing had to be messing with his head. There was no other explanation for it.

“I need to make something very clear here,” Rogan said.

I just stood there, feeling the towel gently moving over my skin, and feeling so … confused by everything that had happened. I was sure if I got captured one day it would only be a matter of hours before they ripped my head off my shoulders, but so far that hadn’t happened.

“I might be showing you my world, but if you try something,” he said and looked me in the eyes. “I will kill you.”

“If you truly could kill me, you would have done it,” I said.

He smiled a little.

“I can’t let you hurt my people.”

“You mean animals.”

“I mean people,” he said. “Serena, we aren’t what you think we are.”

“I know exactly who you are,” I said.

Rogan sighed and threw the towel away before he leaned back against the sink behind him. I looked at him confused. Technically I could run. I might just be able to make it out of here, but I probably wouldn’t get further than the bedroom, so I stayed put, waiting to see what he was going to do.

“You don’t know anything,” he said.

“Oh really?”

He nodded.

“You think you do because it is how you were raised, but we are not the enemy here.”

“I have seen you kill.”

“In order to defend ourselves.”

“You want us all dead,” I said.

“In order to defend ourselves,” he repeated.

“Still murder.”

“And what about you? Don’t you want to kill us all?”

“To save the humans,” I said.

“And we are just saving ourselves. How is that different?”

I wanted to repeat what I had already said and that he was the killer, but the words didn’t leave me. What good did it do? We were running in a loop here, not going anywhere, so instead, I just crossed my arms and looked at him with an annoyed expression on my face.

“Hungry?” he asked.

“Hungry?” I asked back, not really sure I had heard correctly.

“Yes, are you hungry?” he asked.

I was so confused. I couldn’t even answer.

“Serena, are you hungry?” he asked again.

“I …”

“You must be,” he finished for me. “You haven’t eaten anything.”

It felt more like he was talking to himself than me, and when he pushed away from the sink, I took a step back, not sure what to think right now.

“Let us go get you something to eat, but I advise you to keep your eyes down, and don’t try anything.”

“What kind of game are you playing?” I asked.

Rogan looked confused this time.

“What game?” he asked.

“That’s what I am asking you about!”

He only looked more confused and shrugged a little.

“I don’t know what you mean,” he said.

“As if you are actually going to feed me,” I said.

He seemed shocked almost.

“But I am,” he said.

“No, this is a game.”

“No, game,” he promised. “I just want to make sure you don’t starve to death. It kind of ruins my plans.”

“See! Game!”

“My plan of showing you around,” he said, looking almost frightened by my reaction. “I can’t really show you my world, if you are dead.”

It was like we were speaking different languages because I simply couldn’t understand his words right now. I couldn’t understand why he was doing any of it, even if he had told me I was his soulmate or whatever. I just didn’t understand what it truly meant to be his soulmate, so I was sure he was just playing me here.

“Come,” he said and walked over to the open door, but I didn’t move.

“I’m not going with you.”

He looked tired almost, shaking his head a little.

“I really am just going to feed you.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Then come with and prove me wrong,” he challenged.

It was clear he knew I couldn’t turn down his challenge because that was like letting him win, but I still hesitated. I simply couldn’t believe he was actually going to give me food. No one would feed their enemy unless they were keeping them alive for an interrogation or something, but it didn’t seem like Rogan had the strength to hurt me.

“Well?” he asked.

I lifted my chin in the air and walked over to him.

“Fine, I will go, but only so I can say *I told you so*,” I told him.

Rogan smiled a little, and it surprised me.

“Very well, but I am not giving you free reins.”

I looked at him confused, and then he walked into the bedroom getting the cuffs again, before coming back to me.

“Really?” I asked.

“Really,” he said.

I sighed and held out my hands, but he told me to turn around by doing a circular motion with his finger in front of me. I sighed deeply again and turned around. He walked up behind me, but he was surprisingly gentle as he pulled my hands behind my back and cuffed them together. It even felt for a moment, like he was stroking the damaged skin on my wrists, but it happened so fast I was sure if I had just imagined it.

“No tricks,” he said.

“The only one playing any tricks here is you,” I bit back, as I looked over my shoulder.

Rogan just shook his head before he took my arm and brought me out of the room.
