Chapter 44: Badly Wounded
-Rhys-
Rogan and I ran outside where the fight had already started, and it was crazy. Wolves fought everywhere, a few stayed in their human form, and, of course, there were the hunters now fighting with us. It was almost strange to see, but we couldn’t think about that now. We quickly joined the fight, trying to help push back the rogues, when someone suddenly got in my way. I knew instantly who he was.
“Keith,” I said.
“Well, well, if it isn’t our dear sister’s mate,” he said.
Rogan appeared beside me, but someone else joined Keith too.
“Michael meet Rhys, Nova’s mate,” he said.
“So, you’re the one who has been corrupting our sister,” Michael said darkly.
So, this was the second brother. Shit … I promised Nova I would try and not kill them, but I was not sure that was possible. These guys were out to kill us. I could see in their eyes how much they wanted our blood to spill.
“The only thing I have done is love her,” I said.
“Ha! Loving her? You must be crazier than me,” Keith said.
“If that would ever be possible,” I said.
Keith just narrowed his eyes and then pointed at me with a knife that was dripping blood.
“I am going to enjoy ripping you to shreds.”
He then turned into a huge black wolf, his brother followed closely after, and then Rogan and I turned, showing we were not going down from this fight. We all circled each other, but they were the ones to make the first move, running towards us, and forcing us to the ground. We rolled around, and I was able to sink my teeth into his neck, but only shortly, before Keith shook me off him, and pushed me to the ground. He scratched me hard, almost tearing my stomach open. I howled in pain, before I bit him back, going for his throat again. He kept trying to shake me off, but I would not allow him. I kept sinking my teeth deeper, but then another pair of wolves crashed into us and we all rolled away.
I shook my head and got up from the ground, only to look around and not be able to find Rogan, Michael, or Keith. I was stuck in the middle of the battlefield, and yet I could not see my target.
*Where the hell is he?!*
My wolf shouted in my head, not liking this. It was so damn dark, and even though our vision was better than the humans', it did not mean everything stood clear in the dark, and there were so many moving shadows, that it was hard to see who was who.
Suddenly someone came up from behind, getting on my back. I tried shaking him off, but he sank his teeth into my flesh, holding on tightly. I kept trying to shake him, rolling around, but he would not let go, and I could feel my skin tear, and blood running down my body, and I was slowly drained of energy. I really tried to keep going, but soon I was forced to stop fighting and fell to the ground, feeling so weak. Keith finally let go of me and circled me, so he stood in front of me. I could almost see him smiling, even though he was now in his wolf form. He had promised to rip me to pieces, and he had definitely almost succeeded. I looked up at him, seeing how blurry he was. I was bleeding very badly, and it felt like I barely had any control over my body.
Keith growled at me, and let out a victorious howl, but just as he did, I saw an opening. With the last of my strength, I jumped from the ground and bit right into his throat, going through flesh and everything. I bit down hard enough until I separated his throat from the rest of his body, and then I spat it away, just to see him falling to the ground.
I watched until he slowly turned back. When we died in our wolf form, we changed back to our human form. I saw nothing but a lifeless body now.
“Rhys!” I heard someone yell.
I looked around, not sure where it was coming from, but then I saw Rogan come running, now in his human form. I quickly changed back too.
“Michael?” I asked.
“Dead …”
“Shit …”
“I know the promise you made, Nova, but he was trying to kill me,” he said.
“I know,” I said, and looked down at the body in front of me.
Rogan did too, and I heard him curse lowly.
“I tried …” I said.
Rogan nodded and then grabbed me, making me hiss in pain.
“Hey!”
“That looks fucking bad, Rhys,” he said.
“Yeah, it doesn’t feel good,” I said.
“We need to get you to the hospital too.”
“We aren’t done. We are still missing Zane,” I said.
“We don’t have time for that. You need to be stitched up before you bleed out. You know a wolf bite takes so long to heal,” he said.
I sighed but still looked around, hoping I could find Zane somewhere in the crowd.
“Fuck!” I shouted when I couldn’t see him.
“I know, Rhys, but we will find him.”
“I want this over with,” I said. “I have already killed one of her brothers. Maybe I can save the last one.”
“Let’s not think about that right now.”
“I have to. Nova is going to be devastated. They are still her family.”
“I know, Rhys, but this is war. There are no winners in war,” he said.
I nodded. I knew that, but still. Nova was my mate, and all I wanted to do was make her happy. How could I make her happy, when I was the reason why one of her brothers was dead?
“Come on,” he said, and helped me to the house.
No one got in our way luckily, and we quickly got to Rogan’s room, where he handed me some clothes and got me patched up temporarily. He then found his car keys, and walked over to me, grabbing my arm and helping me stand. I was getting weaker. I could feel it.
“Hey, you with me?” Rogan asked as we walked out.
“Yeah … with you,” I whispered.
Rogan had taken another gun and any obstacle that got in our way was shot, but it was already clear who was winning.
We were.
They had made a stupid move to step onto our territory. They might have had the element of surprise, but that moment was over now, and we were getting the upper hand.
“Just stay awake, you hear me?” Rogan said.
“Whatever you say alpha,” I said.
Rogan helped me outside and into his car, but shit, it felt like I could barely control my body now. It just felt ten times heavier, and I knew it was getting really bad, but all I could think about was Nova really. I hoped she was okay, and that she had gotten Serena to the hospital in time.
“Let’s fucking get out of here,” Rogan said and sped out of there.
He was wounded too, but not anywhere dangerous. The wounds would heal just fine without even being tended to.
He quickly drove us to the hospital, where he helped me out of the car and into the big white building we had not far from the house, but when we got inside, we quickly stopped and both sniffed the air. There was a rotten smell in there …
“Shit …”
