Chapter 53: The End
-Rogan-
Serena was going to be fine, but there had been a lot of casualties, on both sides. It was war. No one won it. It just took lives and there was nothing we could do to change it, but the war was over now. It meant we could finally have some peace. We had a lot of work in front of us though. There were a lot of hunters we needed to help. For now, we have kept them locked up in this hospital, and everyone had at least two or one guard on them, but it was clear they had lost the will to fight. Now that the High General had been taken care of and their base had been destroyed, there wasn’t much to fight for.
“Hey,” I said as I walked into the room Serena had been staying in while recovering.
She smiled at me just as she finished tying her shoe.
“Hey,” she said and smiled at me, just as she stood up and walked over to me.
I held open my arms and she hugged me before kissing me. I smiled back at her and stroked some of her long hair away, feeling so happy with my sweet mate in my arms.
“Are you sure it isn’t too early?” I asked.
“I feel fine!” she said.
Yet her arm was still in a sling and she was limping a little.
“You’re wounded.”
“I am not spending one more day in this hospital,” she said. “I won’t be able to do any good from this room.”
“You are allowed to rest a little,” I said.
She shook her head and just walked around me before she started to walk away. I sighed and shook my head.
“Come on, Serena!”
“What? What are you so scared of? I have tried worse,” she said as I caught up to her.
I grabbed her good arm and stopped her.
“That doesn’t make me feel better!” I told her.
She chuckled a little and smiled before she stepped closer to me. Just feeling her warm body up against mine, relaxed me instantly, and made me think of different reasons why she should stay in bed, but I knew she wasn’t quite up for that yet with her wounds.
“I might be human, but I am a hunter,” she said.
“Yes, but still human.”
“I was taught to handle a lot of pain,” she said. “I can walk out of here without anything bad happening to me. Besides, I want to get to work.”
“We are dealing with the hunters just fine. You can rest some more.”
She shook her head.
“No, they need to hear it from another hunter,” she said. “Besides, I really want to go check on Elisa.”
“Right … Elisa,” I said.
“What?!” she asked, scared. “Did something happen to her?”
I smiled and shook my head.
“Not yet.”
“What does that mean?!” she asked.
I just wrapped an arm around her waist and held her close to me.
“The same thing that happened to us,” I said.
She looked at me confused.
“I don’t get it,” she said.
“I had Marcus guard her one day, and it seems like he might just have fallen for the little hunter,” I said.
“Wait … are you saying …”
“They are mates, yes,” I said.
“Those two?!”
I nodded and chuckled a little, and a smile spread on Serena’s lips.
“Oh, she won’t like that,” Serena chuckled.
“She will probably be as hard to convince as you,” I said.
Serena nodded.
“Maybe even harder.”
“She is that stubborn?” I asked.
Serena chuckled and nodded before I took her hand and we started to walk down the hallway. We weren’t in a hurry, so we walked at a slow pace. It was almost strange to think that we didn’t have to hurry to get something done or have to look over our shoulders all the time. No, it was … peaceful, pretty much. I couldn’t believe the war was actually over, but it was, and I was going to enjoy every minute now of my life with my little mate.
“You know you never told me why you had those numbers,” I said.
“Right, that.”
“Do they mean something special?” I asked.
Serena shook her head.
“We get them assigned, but I was able to decide mine,” she said.
“Oh? Why 110 then?” I asked.
She smiled a little, and I looked at her confused.
“What?” I asked.
“It … it was my father’s number,” she said. “I … I wanted to honor him, you know. I wanted to carry his number while I avenged him. While my mother was a great hunter too, my father had always been at the top of his class and a terrific hunter. He was named youngest Commander and I wanted to be just like him.”
I squeezed her hand and she looked up at me and smiled.
“You were a great hunter,” I said. “But now you need to be a great luna.”
“I will try my best.”
After doing a quick check on Elisa, seeing she was just fine, I was able to convince Serena to go back with me and just rest a little. She wasn’t happy about it, but she did as I asked her. As we came to the house, Rhys was on his way out, it looked like he was going for a run again. I smiled at him before I stopped and turned to watch him run away.
I had found my mate, and now so had Marcus, but what of my beta? So far, he had not claimed anyone, and the older you got the lesser the chance of finding a mate. It worried me, and I knew how badly he wanted to find one. All wolves did. You couldn’t share a deeper connection with anyone but your mate, but some simply weren’t blessed with one, and now that I knew what it was like having a mate, I couldn’t imagine life being the same without one.
“Rogan?”
I turned my head and saw Serena watching me concerned.
“Is everything alright?” she asked.
She stood in the doorway, and I couldn’t help but feel so damn happy as I saw her standing there. It was all just perfect. My mate was waiting for me to come inside with her. It was almost symbolic. We were going to start a life together now. Hopefully a good one without any wars or fights. I wanted us to get to know each other better, and lead this pack with love and care. I didn’t want there to be any more bad blood between us. I knew it would take time for the wolves to accept the hunters. I understood that, but I was never letting go of Serena. I loved that hunter, and I would never stop.
“Yes, everything is fine,” I said.
I walked up to her and she smiled at me.
“Everything is perfect actually,” I whispered.
I leaned down to kiss her, before we walked inside, closing the door behind us, and starting our life together.
