Chapter 29: Mesmerized

-Serena-

I laid awake that night thinking about what Rogan had said. He wasn’t lying beside me though. After I had almost fallen asleep on that stupid book that he had given me, he had brought me back here and locked the damn door. I wasn’t sure if he had gone back to work, or if he was doing something else. I didn’t care. I couldn’t stop thinking about what he had said. About me having a normal life. I had never thought of having a normal life or building a family of some sort. I just wanted to avenge my family … it was all I had …

I simply couldn’t just let that life go. My brain felt like it was pounding or something, as I tried denying what he was telling me. It simply couldn’t be true … because if it was … No, I couldn’t even think the thought to an end. I knew what was true. I had been taught it all my life. These were the killers …

I sighed and tried my best to get comfortable so I could fall asleep, but just as I had decided to put this to the back of my head, the door opened, and in came Rogan, dripping wet and only wearing a pair of training shorts. It was clearly raining outside, and he had gone for a run. Who goes running in the rain?! He didn’t seem to notice I was watching him, but I also tried being discreet, acting like I was sleeping.

I could hear him breathing harder. He must have pushed himself when he went running, but he didn’t seem tired or cold even. Sometimes it was simply unfair how strong these people were built. Why couldn’t we also be resistant to the cold? It would make things so much easier … but no, that was not who we were.

Rogan walked towards me, and I quickly closed my eyes. I heard the door to the bathroom close, and then the shower was turned on. I sighed, hoping now I could get some sleep, but no matter how hard I tried, my mind and body didn’t seem to want to work together. I simply couldn’t fall asleep.

Soon, the door to the bathroom opened again. I kept my eyes closed though, and just listened to Rogan walking around the room before I felt him get into bed, lying down on the other side. I heard him sigh a little as if he felt relieved, he could finally relax a little.

“You’re terrible at acting like you’re sleeping.”

I opened my eyes, my whole body tensing. *No need to hide anymore,* I thought, as I slowly turned around, and looked at Rogan. He was lying on his back with an arm under his pillow to keep his head up a little. He turned his head slowly to look at me.

“What gave me away?”

“The fact your whole body was tense. Your shoulders were drawn up and you were pressing your eyes so hard together it looked like you were in pain.”

I sighed in a defeated way.

“Okay, so I am not the best at pretending to be asleep,” I said.

He smiled a little.

“Why aren’t you asleep?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

I shook my head.

“I am in a house full of werewolves,” I said. “And I am sleeping beside one. Why would I ever want to let down my guard?”

“You have already slept here once,” he said.

“When I was completely exhausted and barely able to move,” I said. “I feel more rested now.”

“That’s good,” he said.

I looked at him confused.

“Isn’t that dangerous?”

He seemed to shrug a little.

“I mean if I am rested, I could hurt someone,” I said.

“And if you try to, I will stop you,” he said calmly.

I was confused by his calm behavior. I couldn’t quite read him or understand him. I would be a lot more worried if I had a well-rested werewolf in my bed or house, but then again, our roles were reversed, and I was one tiny little hunter. Was I really that big of a threat?

“You’re not scared of me,” I said.

He shook his head a little.

“No, I am not.”

“I have killed a lot of you,” I said.

“You hunters are only scary in groups and with your gadgets, remove all of that and you’re nothing but humans,” he said.

“That’s not true,” I said and pushed up a little.

“No, you think you can take me?” he asked. “Didn’t I already prove that I am stronger than you?”

“I was exhausted and hurt.”

“You’re still hurt,” he said and reached out, pressing down on my shoulder.

“Stop that!” I said and hissed a little, before pushing his hand away.

“Don’t push yourself into a situation you can’t handle,” he said.

“How do you know I can’t handle it? You don’t know me.”

“No, I don’t, but you don’t know this world either.”

“I fight in it,” I said.

“But you got a wrong view of it, which is what I am trying to get through your thick head,” he told me a little harshly and a little bit tiredly.

“We are enemies,” I said.

“We are.”

“How am I the one looking at the world wrong?”

“Because you fight for nothing,” he said. “We fight for our survival.”

“We do too!”

He shook his head and sighed.

“No, you fight against a monster that doesn’t exist,” he said.

“We protect the humans.”

“We would never touch them,” he said. “We like to stay with our own, and we are not killers.”

“Why should I believe you?” I asked.

“I told you why. You have never seen us kill innocents. Only those who threaten us.”

“That’s a lie!” I snarled. “My family was a victim of your brutal nature.”

Rogan pushed up from the bed, resting now on his arm, as he moved closer to me.

“People that tried to hurt us.”

“You killed them in their home!”

Rogan looked at me confused.

“What?”

“You are cruel! And you’re animals!” I said.

“Wait? Did you say we killed them in their homes?”

I nodded, and a strange expression appeared on Rogan’s face.

“Where was this home of yours?” he asked.

I looked at him confused.

“Why?”

“Because I am asking.”

“That’s not a reason,” I said.

“I am just trying to learn more about you.”

I shook my head and just pushed him away because he felt too close to me, but he barely moved, and instead grabbed my wrist, turning us around, so I ended up underneath him.

“Let me go!” I said.

His eyes seemed to have a faint yellow color all of a sudden, and I stared up at them mesmerized.

“I told you I was the strongest,” he said.

I glared at him, and he just smiled before he used his other hand and ran one of his fingers down my cheek. Damn, he felt warm, and in a nice way. Why the hell did I even think such a thing? I should be pulling away, but I wasn’t. Instead, I was looking up into those dark green eyes that had taken on that faint yellow color. They were … beautiful. What the hell was happening to me?
