Chapter 38: Want To Fix It All
-Serena-
I was not a crier. I didn’t cry!
The tears stopped long ago, but suddenly, now that I knew the truth, I couldn’t hold them back, and the only thing that seemed to help me was Rogan. Him, close to me helped me more than I could say. I had not hugged a lot of people. I wasn’t a hugger either, but right now I just needed his arms around me, feeling him holding me close.
I wasn’t sure how long we stood like that outside in the middle of the night, just holding each other. Rogan kept trying to soothe me, and it definitely helped. It was like he had a power over me that I couldn’t understand. I would never have thought I would be this close to a werewolf, but I found myself leaning on him for strength.
How weird … yet comforting too.
“I’m sorry,” I eventually whispered.
“What?”
Rogan leaned back and looked at me. I wasn’t sure if he heard me or not. Werewolves had an incredible hearing, but maybe he just wanted me to say it again.
“I’m sorry,” I repeated.
“For?”
“Everything. Everything I have ever done,” I told him, feeling so much guilt.
Rogan lifted one of his hands and placed it on my cheek, stroking my skin with his thumb. The caress felt really nice, and I leaned into the touch.
“You don’t need to say you’re sorry. We have all killed.”
“But we are the monsters,” I said.
“Serena, I wanted you to see the truth, not drown in guilt,” he said.
“How can I not? After everything I have said and done.”
“It can be forgotten,” he told me.
“How?”
“Let’s not talk about that now. Let us go inside,” he said.
I shook my head and held onto him when it was clear he was trying to leave.
“Rogan, tell me how I can fix this,” I said.
“Serena—”
“Now!”
“You have had a crazy night already. Why talk about this now? How about some sleep instead?” he asked.
I shook my head.
“Just tell me.”
Rogan sighed and crossed his arms.
“Fine, but promise me you will come inside afterwards and rest a little,” he said.
“I promise.”
“You’re a hunter,” he said.
“Thanks for reminding me …”
“What I mean is you have information we need,” he said. “And the fact you are a Commander tells me you know a lot in fact.”
I slowly realized what he was saying. I had been too sad and lost to even think about why I was here in the first place. Why Rogan had prevented me from killing myself and had taken me with him. I could change everything. I could stop the hunters and help the werewolves. I could end this war …
“You mean I could lead you to them,” I said.
He nodded.
“Would you kill them?” I asked.
“Well, we didn’t really plan on inviting them out for lunch,” he told me.
I rolled my eyes.
“Rogan! They are like me!” I said. “Manipulated!”
“I understand,” he said. “But we cannot be that careful with them because they will try and kill us. We need to be able to protect ourselves. I always have to put the pack first.”
“What if I could convince them?” I asked.
“What?”
“What if I could show them who the real enemy is?” I asked.
“I’m not sure we have the time for it.”
“Let’s make a plan then. Figure out what I can do to save as many as I can,” I said.
Rogan seemed to think it over, but it didn’t look like I had convinced him. The only reason why he had let me walk around rather freely, was because I was his mate. He might not want to sacrifice as much for others.
“How would you even make them listen?” he asked.
“I’m not sure, but I know the base well, and I have access to big parts of it. Maybe I could go in and get the recruits first. Talk to them. Show them the truth,” I said.
“If you want to show them the truth, you need proof.”
“I think I know where to get that,” I said.
“Let me guess. The base?”
I nodded.
“I’m close to the High General,” I told him.
“What?!”
He seemed shocked, and yet it was clear he saw an opportunity too.
“You are?”
I nodded.
“Hmm,” he said. “That might just work to our advantage. You know who ordered the murder of your parents, right?”
I nodded slowly.
“The High General,” I whispered.
I couldn’t believe this. She had practically raised me after my parents died, and I couldn’t be a hundred percent sure, but I would find out, and if she was part of it, and then she would pay for this!
“Alright then. We will let those live who you can convince to join our side,” he said.
I smiled, feeling very happy to hear this.
“Thank you, Rogan!”
I didn’t even think about what I was doing before I got on the tip of my toes and kissed him. He quickly wrapped his arms around me, clearly not caring why I was doing it, as long as I didn’t stop.
“I could get used to that,” he pulled back and said.
“What?”
“You kissing me because you want to and not because you want to steal my car keys,” he joked.
“Really? Are you sure about that?” I asked and quickly snatched his car keys from his pants pocket holding them up in front of him.
“You sneaky little hunter,” he said and grabbed the keys, making me laugh a little.
How was he doing that? Making me feel so light.
“No more taking my keys without permission.”
I nodded.
“And let’s get inside,” he said.
“You’re right. We got a lot of work to do,” I said.
“Serena …”
“What?” I asked when he looked at me with an almost disappointed look.
“What did we agree on?” he asked.
“What?” I asked, very confused.
“I tell you how you can fix this and you let it go until tomorrow, so you can rest.”
“Yes, but—”
“No buts,” he said. “Rest. Then we plan.”
I sighed, but could see Rogan was not changing his mind about this, and so we walked inside and got back to his bedroom before we went to sleep a little.
