Chapter 43: Her Brother
-Nova-
Serena was looking at me, as the rogue hovered over her, and I quickly looked around for my gun, seeing it lying in between us. I jumped forward, grabbing it, but the rogue saw me and went for me. He tackled me, leaving Serena and trying to handle the only threat there was, which was me. I had not been able to get the gun before he got to me, and I had to hold him back with both my hands, so he wouldn’t bite my fucking face off. He kept trying to get me, constantly biting air, as I was lying beneath him, unable to barely move without risking being killed. I couldn’t change, or he would surely get an opportunity to kill me.
“No!” I screamed, just as his teeth scratched my jaw. “Get off!”
Suddenly, a gunshot was fired and the wolf went limp on top of me. I looked at it scared, and then quickly threw it off me. I sat up and looked around, seeing Serena holding the gun with a shaking arm, and pressing her hand to her wound. She looked so bad now.
“Serena …”
She fell forward, unable to keep herself up anymore.
“No!”
I quickly went to her and got ahold of her and the gun.
“Come on, you have to stand!” I said.
“Just let me … be …”
“No! I am getting you to that hospital,” I said.
“Nova … Go …”
“No! I am not leaving!” I told her and forced her to her feet.
She helped me a little, but she was very weak, and she pretty much clung to me, as I brought her outside, where I got her inside Rhys’s car. She was barely awake, as I drove away, but it wasn’t so easy to navigate. Even outside, people were fighting, and I had to turn sharply in order to not hurt anyone because I couldn’t see who was a friend and who was not. A wolf even jumped on the car, and it forced me to break fast, so he flew over the car and rolled away. I quickly sped out of there again, and the further I got from the house and closer to the hospital the fewer wolves there were. Soon, I could see the building in front of me, and I felt so damn happy that I couldn’t describe it.
“Serena, we are here!” I said and looked over at her, but she had passed out.
I quickly parked the car in front of the doors, and then turned to her and shook her.
“Serena!”
She didn’t respond.
“Serena, wake up!” I shouted, shaking her harder.
Finally, she seemed to wake up, and she turned to me.
“Nova?”
“We are here. Let’s hurry,” I said.
I got out of the car and then ran to her side, opened the door, and helped her out. She was still clinging to me, and I had to leave the gun in the car so I could hold onto her properly, but I got her inside, and as soon as I did, I shouted for help. Luckily, a few nurses and a pack doctor were there, and they quickly came running, asking me all sorts of questions, but I couldn’t answer them, because I could barely focus on what they were saying. I just told them to take care of her, and then I followed them until I couldn’t anymore. The doors shut close in my face, and it had bigger letters on it that said *staff only*. I sighed and turned around, trying my best to calm my racing heart. I looked down at my hands and saw them covered in blood.
“Shit …”
I quickly tried to wipe them clean by running my hands over my clothes, but it didn’t do much.
“Oh, please make it,” I whispered.
If Serena died on my watch, then there was no way I would ever be welcome here, and I liked Serena. I didn’t want her to die because of what my brothers had done.
“Hello, Nova.”
I turned my head and there … at the end of the hallway stood Zane. I swallowed hard, watching my brother who was covered in blood too, which I knew without a doubt was not his own.
“I knew it was a good idea to have my eyes on you,” he said.
He held a sharp knife in his hand, and I felt myself shake.
“A-Are you here to kill me?” I asked.
“I told you we would show no mercy if you left us,” he said.
“Zane … please …”
“But you aren’t really my target right now,” he said.
I looked behind me to the automatic doors that were closed now, and where Serena had been brought.
“You can’t!” I shouted at him and turned to him.
“If she does, Rogan goes down too.”
“Zane no! There is still time to change!” I told him.
“Change? Why do you think we want to? Have you any idea of what these people cost us?”
“They aren’t the ones who killed mom and dad,” I said.
“No, but they have killed so many of us. They are always looking down on us, Nova. Why do you want to be part of them?” he asked.
“I was never good at being a rogue. Here I actually have a place where people listen to me and want to be around me,” I said. “You were the ones always looking down on me.”
“We were your family.”
“Which is why I have asked them to spare you!” I said.
“Spare us?” he chuckled evilly. “Keith and Michael are already dead.”
I stared at my brother, not able to process those words.
“Your mate killed Keith and Rogan the other.”
“No …”
“Yes,” he said. “This is who they are! They despise us and we should not bow to their power!”
“Please … Zane, I don’t want to lose you too. I beg of you! Stop!”
“Stop? I can’t stop now,” he said.
“Please …”
I felt the tears press in my eyes.
“You betrayed us, Nova, now you will go down with the rest,” he said.
“Zane … No!”
“Get out of my way, Nova.”
I shook my head and held out my arms.
“No.”
“Nova!”
“I am not letting you kill her!” I shouted.
My brother looked at me like he had never done before. Like he would a stranger or someone he hated.
“Very well,” he said. “I guess I will have to take you down first.”
“Please, Zane, let’s talk. Don’t do this!” I said.
“This is who we are!” he said as he got closer.
“No, we can change.”
“There is no changing,” he said darkly.
“Zane!”
He reached out and grabbed me, pushing me out of his way, but I quickly got up and threw myself at him, so we both tumbled into the wall beside the doors. Zane pushed me away, and I stumbled back a few steps before he cut the air with his knife.
“Zane, no!”
