Chapter 40: Helping
-Rogan-
We were going to meet with everyone in the office. Not the entire pack, but those I worked closest with, and Serena was going to be with me this time. Right now, only Rhys knew the truth about her, and when we came into the office after having eaten a little, he looked at her with much less hate in his eyes. I was glad to see it though, but the rest were still not convinced about her. I hoped the truth about her would change some things.
“Good,” I said. “Everyone is here.”
I was holding onto Serena, not liking to not feel her at all now that I knew she had accepted me. I knew my possessiveness would never decrease. I would always feel very attached to her, and even more so after I marked her. I took her with me over to my desk and placed her beside me as I sat down. I could see everyone but Rhys glaring at her.
“We got a lot to talk about,” I said.
“Hopefully something we will like to hear this time,” Marcus said, even though it sounded like a joke, it was clear he was as displeased as the rest about Serena being here.
“Yes, it is,” I said.
Now everyone looked a little more intrigued, and I glanced a little at Serena. She looked so much more nervous now that she no longer had her hatred to overshadow it.
“Serena has agreed to help us.”
Everyone just stared, and Serena took a small step back, so I reached out and placed an arm around her waist, keeping her close. I bet she wasn’t used to standing in front of such powerful wolves and just getting stared at, but that was what was happening right now. I tried my best not to smile, and I could see Rhys, who was sitting in front of us, did too. It was good to feel that my beta wasn’t fighting me anymore. He was one of my closest friends, and I didn’t want him to be my enemy too.
“Say that again,” Marcus said.
“She has agreed to help us.”
“Why?!” Will asked.
“Because she has realized some things,” I said.
“What things?” Mel asked.
I looked at Serena, not sure she wanted to talk about it, but then I saw her change before my eyes. She turned into the leader she was and no longer looked so scared.
“I have been deceived my entire life,” she said.
Everyone just glanced at each other.
“I thought I was making a difference in the world … I wasn’t.”
“And you have realized this?” Mel asked with an attitude as if she couldn’t quite believe it.
“Give her a chance to talk,” Hannah said, and Serena smiled at her.
Hannah gave her a polite nod back, and I wondered if those two might have a chance of becoming close friends.
“Last night I went home.”
“What?! Back to the hunters?” Marcus asked.
Serena shook her head and smiled a little.
“No. Home home,” she said. “I went back to where I lived with my parents, and Rogan followed me. It was then we figured out my parents used to be your spies.”
Everyone looked so shocked, and this time I couldn’t hold back my smile.
“It’s true. Rhys was there too. We figured out who Serena’s parents were, but back then the hunters got to her first and lied to her about who truly killed her parents.”
“I have wanted to avenge my parents for so long, and I thought I was doing that by taking down one werewolf at a time,” she said. “There was no excuse for any of you.”
“And now?” Hannah asked.
“Now … Now I see I was wrong. I was wrong about everything, and … and I am sorry,” Serena said, and everyone just … I believed they lost their minds. Never had they gotten an apology from a hunter. This had to be a first. “I know they are just words, so let me prove it.”
“How?” Will asked.
“By helping you. I know a lot of things. I was the top recruit under my training and I became a Commander a while ago. I can help you,” she said.
“Prove it,” Mel said.
She was still looking at Serena with distrust, but I wondered if there was more to it than her just being a hunter. I hoped though that Mel could be convinced. I didn’t want anyone fighting anymore. We needed to stand together.
Serene thought over Mel’s request, and I knew she was looking for something fast to do, so she could prove she was really going to be on our side now, and then it was like she got an idea. I could see it on her face.
“You got spies among you,” she said.
“What?” I asked.
Serena looked down at me, looking almost apologetic.
“You do,” she said. “Our spies.”
“You’re the only hunter here,” Mel said.
Serena turned to her again.
“Not hunters. Wolves.”
“What?” she asked.
“We had some captured last year and … turned,” she said.
“And when you say turned …” Marcus asked.
“I mean tortured.”
Everyone was glaring at her now, and I held onto her tighter, letting out a little growl and warning everyone to stop that.
“She is trying to help,” I said.
“She hurt our people,” Marcus said back.
“We can’t change the past. Now let us look forward,” I told them.
Everyone knew I was right and stopped glaring a little, but they still didn’t look pleased.
“I wasn’t part of it,” she said. “At least not directly, but we sent them back home. It was how we knew where you were going to be.”
Serena looked at me again, and a lot made sense then.
“I see,” I said.
“I was the one who was given the task of killing you,” she said.
I nodded.
“Well, I’m still standing,” I said and smiled.
She smiled a little too.
“Do you know who the spies are?” I asked.
She nodded.
“I got the names. I remember them,” she told me.
“Good, write them all down.”
I found a notepad and a pen, and she quickly grabbed it all and started to scribble down the names.
“Once we remove the spies though, they will know something is wrong,” Rhys said.
“I’m not going to remove them,” I said.
Everyone looked confused.
“I just want to know who they are, so we know what kind of information to feed back to the hunters. Once the hunters are taken care of, we will start helping them get back to normal,” I said.
I could see everyone liked this plan, and soon Serena had all the names scribbled down.
“I can’t say if they have others. Maybe some I wasn’t told about, but these are the ones I know were sent back to their packs,” she said.
“So, it isn’t just in ours?” Hannah asked.
Serena shook her head.
“No, we wanted information from everywhere,” she said.
“Fuck …” I whispered. “We got a lot of work to do.”
