Chapter 42: Attacked

-Nova-

Everyone had been rather tense the whole day, getting themselves ready for tomorrow. Rhys wanted to go to bed early though, but not because he wanted us to spend the night naked and just forget everything. No, we just laid in bed, and he just held me close, stroking my hair, and telling me how much he loved me, and when all of this was over, we could finally start our lives together. It sounded so good, and soon I was fast asleep, but I didn’t sleep for long. Something woke me …

I sat up, looking around the dark room. It was in the middle of the night, and yet I had a strange feeling. I looked to my left, seeing Rhys sleeping soundly beside me, and the house sounded quiet. Still, there was something I didn’t like, but when I couldn’t find out what was wrong, I laid down beside Rhys again, scooting closer to him, only to notice something out of the corner of my eye. It looked like a shadow moving, and then something shone as the moonlight hit it.

“Rhys!” I shouted as I noticed the knife coming towards us.

I pushed him and he rolled away, while the knife cut my arm before I could get away. I rolled to the floor but quickly got up on my knees, seeing Rhys fighting our attacker. He was fast, but Rhys was faster and was able to get the knife out of his hand before sending it into his neck. The attacker fell down on the ground, the life slowly running out of him. Rhys hurried over to me, helping me stand. He was wearing his boxers and I was wearing his shirt, so we weren’t completely naked. Rhys took a look at my arm, but I was already healing.

“What happened?” Rhys asked and looked around.

“Something is wrong, Rhys. I can feel it,” I said.

He nodded.

“I don’t think your brothers are going to wait for us to come to them,” he said.

“No, they are already here.”

Rhys grabbed my hand and pulled me with him. We went to the walk-in closet, where we put on some more clothes, and then Rhys found his weapons. I was surprised when he armed me too.

“Can you shoot?”

“I am okay,” I said.

“Good, because right now we are going to need all the help we can get,” he said.

He walked back to the nightstand and quickly texted someone.

“Who are you texting?” I asked.

“Julianna. We are going to need more help.”

“Rhys … What if they have already gotten to the others? Everything sounds so quiet,” I said.

“It won’t be quiet for long,” he said.

Rhys walked over to me again, taking my hand, and we both had a gun in our other, as we walked to the door. He slowly opened it and looked outside, but everything was still quiet. We walked out, and continued slowly down the hallway, all the way to where Serena’s and Rogan’s bedroom was. Rhys slowly grabbed the handle, pushed it down, and then opened the door, jumping inside, just as a shot was fired. I screamed and ran into the room too, ready to defend Rhys, but then I saw it was just Rogan and Serena, yet Serena was bleeding very badly from a wound in her stomach, and there was a body in the room.

“Dammit, Rogan, it is me!” Rhys said as Rogan pointed his gun at his friend.

“Next time, knock!”

“Sure, I will knock,” Rhys said sarcastically.

“What happened?” I asked.

“He got me,” Serena got out.

She looked so damn pale, and I knew the wound was bad.

“I need to get her to the hospital,” Rogan said.

“We will help you to the car,” Rhys said.

“No, let me!”

Everyone looked at me.

“I will take Serena,” I said.

They just kept looking at me, and I knew they were not sure about this.

“I can keep her safe, and you two are needed here more! My brothers are out there and if anyone can stop them it is you two!” I told them.

Rogan started to shake his head, but then Serena grabbed his hand hard.

“No!” he said to her.

“Yes,” she said.

“You need me.”

“Nova is not wrong. You are needed here, and I am wounded. I am getting in the way,” she said.

“Serena, I am not letting you out of my sight.”

Serena pulled him closer and then kissed him, and I could see how Rogan was shaking. He was so scared for her, and at the same time, he knew where his duties lied.

“We will find each other again. We always do,” she said.

“I don’t like this,” he said.

“You don’t have to,” she said and winked at him.

Serena turned to me and nodded, and I quickly walked over to her, wrapping her arm around my neck, and helping her walk.

“Nova,” Rhys said, as we walked closer to him. “Here.”

He gave me his car keys and smiled. I had driven back in his car and given him the keys, and now once again he was putting the precious keys in my hand.

“Don’t run off,” he teased me.

“I am not leaving you ever again,” I promised him.

I could see how happy my words were making him, and he smiled at me.

“Okay you two lovebirds, let’s move, I am bleeding here,” she said.

“Oh, right.”

Rhys and Rogan left the room first, just to make sure everything was clear, but then when we left it, hell broke out. Soon, people were screaming and yelling and growls echoed in the big house and gunshots. We were definitely under attack now.

“How did they get so close?” Serena got out.

“Maybe they always knew how to get in.”

“Maybe or maybe someone told them something.”

“I didn’t say anything!” I said. “And why go with me if you didn’t trust me?”

Serena sighed, while she pressed her hand to her wound.

“Yeah … you’re right … I am just …”

“Scared?”

“Worried, I was going to say worried,” she said.

“Sure, why would a hunter ever be scared?” I teased, trying to lighten the mood.

Serena smiled a little, but I could see how much she was sweating and how pale she was. She really needed medical help. Good thing the hospital was built further away from the house, and hopefully it wouldn’t be under attack.

“Exactly, we are tough,” she said.

“Yeah, exactly!” I said, trying to encourage her to keep going.

We were moving so slowly, and when we got down to the next floor, people were running around, and I saw rogues chasing people from the house.

“Shit …”

“Keep going,” Serena said.

“But …”

“Nova, I am bleeding out here!” she said.

I nodded, knowing I couldn’t save everyone.

“Don’t worry, we will be at the car soon,” I said as we walked down the next set of stairs. “Just hold on a little …”

Just as we had reached the bottom of the stairs, we were tackled from behind, and we both rolled over the floor. I groaned and looked up, as I finally laid still, and I saw a huge rogue standing over Serena, who was breathing heavily, lying on her stomach. I could see it in her eyes though. She knew her time was up …
