Chapter 46: Hopes To Earn Her Place
-Serena-
It was still a little strange joining everyone at dinner. Not every wolf from Rogan’s back ate together, but there was quite a lot as we sat there eating dinner. I sat beside him, and while I didn’t join the conversation much, I was happy just being close to him. We hadn’t been able to do much work today, but that was okay. I think everyone loved just knowing they might have a chance to win now. I was going to lead them to the base, and we were going to end it all. Rogan had promised we would save as many hunters as we could and help them back on track, but I was not stupid. I knew war always claimed lives. We couldn’t change anything about that, and there was one life I was not going to save …
“What are you thinking about?” Rogan whispered in my ear.
After dinner, a few of us had gathered in one of the bigger living rooms. Some were drinking and talking, while others were playing a game of pool. I was standing in a corner, not really listening to anything or joining any of the conversations.
“Just thinking about this war,” I said.
Rogan turned more serious. I could see how close he was to everyone. He wasn’t just their leader. He was their friend and their family. He made sure everyone knew they could trust him and he would be there for them, which was good, because some had doubted him when he chose not to kill me, but it seemed like everyone was starting to believe in him again.
“Are you worried?”
I nodded.
“Aren’t you?” I asked.
“Of course, but I think we can finally end this.”
“I do too,” I said.
“But there is something else, isn’t there?”
“Why would you think that?” I asked.
Rogan smiled a little.
“I can sense it.”
“Sense it?”
“It’s the bond between us. I can feel what you feel now.”
“You can?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Can’t you feel anything?”
I wasn’t sure. I had felt different, but I wasn’t sure why. Could it be I had been able to sense what Rogan was feeling, without really knowing?
“Maybe I have been a little distracted,” I said.
“It’s okay,” he said and put an arm around me, pulling me closer and kissing the top of my head. “You can focus more on it when all of this is over. You are human. It might take some time for you to truly connect with it.”
“Maybe,” I said.
Rogan pulled back a little and looked at me.
“Just tell me what is bothering you.”
I sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to let this go.
“I want to kill the High General,” I said.
“The what?”
“She is the person who runs all of this, and … and she kind of took care of me after my parents were killed. I have a feeling that she … knows,” I said, my voice turning darker.
“You think she was involved in the murder of your parents?”
I nodded.
“Who else?” I asked.
Rogan shrugged.
“You know them the best,” he said.
“I just want answers!”
“I get it,” he said. “You will get them.”
“If she knew … if she took part in it … I’m going to kill her, and I am not going to feel bad about it.”
“You shouldn’t feel bad,” he said. “They lied to you.”
“But they are not all bad.”
“Serena—”
“You promised we would try and save as many as we could,” I said.
“And I am keeping that promise,” he told me.
I nodded happily.
“Good,” I said.
“But you do know that war—”
“Takes lives. I know.”
“Good. I will do my best. I swear, and I will make sure everyone knows as well to spare as many as they can, but you need to be prepared. The hunters will fight back.”
“I know. Of course, they will,” I said. “But I want to try and save as many as I can. Especially my team.”
“How about this?” he asked. “You take care of the High General and your team.”
“They might not listen to me. They will see me as a traitor and not as their Commander,” I said.
“Try your best. I will make sure they make it out alive if you can get them to lay down their weapons.”
“You can?”
“I will do my best,” he promised.
I smiled at him, feeling my heart filled with so much love. I pulled him down to me and kissed him hard. He quickly responded, and I felt my need for him grow stronger. He pressed me closer to him, so I could feel how much he wanted me too.
“You make me lose my mind,” he whispered, looking like he was almost in pain.
I chuckled a little.
“I think you made me lose mine,” I told him.
He smiled at me.
“A hunter and a werewolf, you know how insane that is, right?” I asked.
“I guess we are both crazy then.”
I smiled.
“Yeah, I guess we are.”
Rogan looked at me with such tender eyes, and I simply didn’t know what to say. At that moment, it felt like there was no one else. Only we existed, and I could barely catch my breath when he was looking at me like this.
“Rogan!” someone called behind him.
Rogan looked over his shoulder and saw Marcus inviting him over for a game of pool. Rogan looked a bit conflicted. He both wanted to stay here with me, probably hoping we could sneak away for a little while, but he was also very dedicated to his pack, and wanting to spend time with them, not as their alpha, was very important to him.
I saw Rogan in such a new light, now that I was no longer determined to kill him, and it just made my heart beat for him and only him. Could it be I was already falling for my werewolf? The alpha of all alphas.
“Want to go play?” I asked.
He looked at me, still looking conflicted.
“I really want to get you out of here and play a different game,” he said.
I chuckled and kissed him.
“We can always do that later.”
I grabbed his hand and then led him over to the table. It was clear if I didn’t go with him, he wouldn’t be able to leave my side, and it made me feel quite happy. It seemed the others were quite happy I had taken him over to the pool table as well. They understood Rogan had a new focus now. Not that he would ever forget his pack, but his attention had definitely been divided now. I hoped I could be accepted by them in the end, but I had a lot to fix.
