Chapter 50: Want The Truth
-Serena-
I was sitting on an examination table, as I was being checked out by one of the doctors who worked there. Our doctors were technically still hunters. They were from a hunter’s family, but they had decided to go in a different direction and were treating people instead of hunting down werewolves. I was all alone in the room. The High General had ordered it to be so. The people from my group had protested. After hearing I was alive, they had all come running, but the High General had told them they could see me later after she had talked to me. She had told me I had to come find her afterwards, and I had agreed. I wanted to talk to her anyway, and I knew our conversation was going to be an interesting one.
“There,” the doctor said. “All patched up.”
I smiled a little at her and nodded thankfully.
“You’re going to live,” she said.
“Thank you.”
She smiled at me and I jumped down from the examination table but remembered to groan a little as if I was in a lot of pain. We often weren’t given much pain medication. We were taught to use and control the pain we felt. They used pain to teach us a lot of things.
“Come find me if you experience any sorts of violent headaches or you are throwing up,” the doctor told me, as I walked towards the door.
“Of course,” I said.
“And take it easy the next few days.”
I nodded.
“I will, doc.”
I opened the door and walked out before I started to walk towards the elevator. Most of our base was made underground, and so I had to go a level down to get to the meeting room where the High General was waiting. It was the same room where she had given me the mission to kill Rogan.
I found her sitting with the other generals, and I felt myself getting a little nervous, as I stepped into the room, and they all turned to me.
“Ah, Serena,” the High General said.
It was strange. She had rarely called me by my name after I was made a true hunter and was given my number.
“Come sit,” she said and gestured to the seat opposite her, which was at the other end of the table.
I slowly sat down, making a big number of it to make sure it looked like I was in a lot of pain.
“I’m sure you know why we needed to talk so soon,” she said.
I nodded.
“You need to know what happened,” I said.
She smiled at me.
“Yes, exactly. You must understand, we thought you were dead just like 121,” she said.
*Vince …*
I said his name in my head because for the first time I hated these numbers. They dehumanized us. They made us just a number like Rogan had said. We were disposable, and I didn’t want to be disposable. Rogan had made me feel like I could be more. Like I could actually matter. I could have a true purpose. A good one this time, and one that didn’t involve me hurting others. I could help people. Take care of them. Be a good … luna. It was strange to think of myself as a leader of wolves, but perhaps with time, I would be good at it.
“Yes, I thought I was going to die too,” I said.
“What happened exactly? Your group informed me you went after 121 and then got caught in the crossfire,” the High General said.
I nodded.
“I knew the others wouldn’t wait for me, and so I tried poising myself.”
“But you were unsuccessful?”
I nodded again.
“Yes, as I made my escape, I was shot and I had to slow down. Rogan … our target, he prevented me from killing myself,” I told her.
“But he didn’t kill you?”
I shook my head.
“No, he wanted something from me.”
“What?” she asked.
“Information.”
The High General narrowed her eyes a little, and the other generals looked at me almost angrily, probably already thinking I had betrayed them. Why else would I be here, right? I had betrayed them, but they betrayed me first.
“And?”
“And I didn’t give them any,” I said.
“Really?”
I nodded.
“They tried getting it from me, but you have taught me well,” I said. “I was able to escape.”
“How?”
“They would give me breaks once in a while, and put guards on me. One day there was a rather inexperienced one. A young wolf was in charge of me. I was able to trick him, by acting like I had passed out. He got concerned and loosened my restraints, wanting to take me to their hospital. I was able to surprise him and knock him out. I took his gun, but ran out of bullets, as I fought my way out,” I told her.
The High General looked at me for a long time, and I could feel my heart starting to beat faster. I wasn’t sure if she believed me. I was not a good liar. It was not what I had been trained to be, so I truly hoped she would buy my story.
“I have been running for two days,” I said. “I just wanted to come home.”
As I referred to this place as home, the High General seemed to soften a little, and I hoped I had won her over. She looked at me for a little while longer and then turned to the other generals.
“Could we have the room please?”
I wasn’t sure how I was going to get rid of them, but then the High General did it for me, and all the generals started to leave the room. I wasn’t so sure I had convinced them, but it seemed like I had won over the person who had the power to decide my fate. She placed her hands on the table, as she looked at me, the door closing behind the last of the generals, and she smiled at me.
“I’m glad you’re home, Serena,” she said.
“It’s good to be.”
Her smile grew a little.
“We were very worried. I was very worried,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it when your team told me you were … You’re like a daughter to me. You know this.”
I pressed my teeth hard together, trying not to feel disgusted by her words, and not let my anger take over. I smiled as best as I could, but I feared I was just making an ugly grimace.
“I know,” I finally got out.
“I couldn’t believe you had ended up suffering the same fate as your parents. Killed by wolves.”
“I didn’t though,” I said.
The High General nodded, and then she got up from her seat and walked over to me. She was dressed in this grey uniform with small medals on and wearing big light grey boots. She always looked so perfect, like she had never gotten her hands dirty, but I knew how drenched in blood they were. She had betrayed her friends. She was close with my parents, back when they were alive, but she had turned her back on them the first chance she got. I wouldn’t be surprised if their deaths had been her ticket to power.
“No, you’re back now,” she said and sat down on the edge of the table, right in front of me.
She reached out and placed her hand on my shoulder, but I just felt so damn cold from her touch.
“And I am very happy about that. I wished for your safe return. I wished for the world to give you back to us. There is no hunter like you,” she said.
“Really?”
“I mean, except your parents, of course. They were exceptional. You know the stories I told you,” she said.
I nodded.
“By heart,” I said.
She smiled and pushed away from the table, but on her way back to her own seat, I simply couldn’t stay quiet anymore. I needed to know …
“Which is why I don’t get how you could kill them,” I said.
The High General froze and slowly turned around, looking at me confused.
“What?”
“You, their friend, killed them,” I said.
“Serena …”
“Don’t even try and lie about it. Just tell me one thing. Why?”
