Chapter 5: His Chance
-Nova-
It made no sense …
First, I found out my mate was a pack member and a beta too! It was the next highest position you could have. Right under alpha and luna! How could I, a rogue, ever get paired with a beta?! I was supposed to get paired with another rogue or maybe a lone wolf. I did not have the status to be paired with someone so strong! Some might think it was silly, but when one was stronger than the other, it could create an unbalance where one could abuse the other with that power. Except, this one did not use his power on me at all, at least not the one that came with his status. Of course, he had easily overpowered me with his strength, but he was not forcing me to submit to him.
“W-W-Why …” I stammered.
Why couldn’t I get my voice under control?! I felt so weak and small under his eyes, yet I didn’t see anger or disgust in his eyes. No, I saw desire. For some reason, it frightened me even more, because I knew if he really wanted me, then he could just have me. I was not strong enough to fight him off.
“Because, as I said, I have been waiting for you for a long time.”
“Me?!”
“Well, my mate,” he said.
Goddess, his voice was so smooth and nice, running over my skin and leaving goosebumps everywhere. I could barely breathe because of how close we stood.
“N-no …”
“But we are,” he said and smiled.
I shook my head.
“We … We can’t be,” I whispered.
He just continued to smile and then moved closer. I quickly turned my head, fearing he would kiss me or something, but he just buried his face in my neck and inhaled. It made me whimper a little because something so simple had me clenching my thighs together, and making me feel like my knees were turning to jelly.
“You smell so good,” he whispered, tickling my ear with his hot breath.
I shouldn’t be smelling good to him. I knew how rogues smelled. We were told it often. We might not smell like rot to ourselves and each other, but to other pack members, we smelled like rot. We smelled very bad, and it was a warning of what we were, but he was saying I smelled good? It made no sense. Of course, he smelled good. He was a little sweaty from the fight that had happened tonight, but it just added to his natural dark one, and I wanted to bury my nose in his t-shirt and inhale … No, no, I couldn’t think like that.
“Please … let me go.”
He moved back, looking rather displeased, and I turned to look at him.
“No,” he said.
“You have to!”
“How can I when you are a rogue?” he asked.
“I …”
“I should be punishing you,” he said.
“Please …”
I could just imagine how they punished rogues. I wondered if I would even get a trial or if they would just kill me.
“I haven’t … hurt anyone,” I whispered.
”You expect me to believe that?” he asked me and his eyes turned a little darker.
“I … don’t … hurt people.”
“That’s all you rogues do,” he said and sighed.
It was like he finally realized how bad this situation was, and why this thing between us had to end right now before anyone found out.
“Dammit …” he whispered.
“Just let me go. No one has to know,” I said.
He shook his head.
“I can’t …”
“Yes, you can!” I said.
*Shit, what do we do?! Our mate is a beta! And he looks so good! But he is bad for us … No, no, we want him … No, we can’t …*
Even my wolf was confused. She was much more affected by the bond than I was, and while she wanted to protect us, she also wanted to be with him. This was not good.
“I can’t let you go,” he said. “I just can’t!”
“Just reject me!”
He shook his head.
“You reject me,” he said.
“You will want to kill me when I do.”
“You don’t really want to though,” he said. “That’s what I am trying to prove.”
“I can reject you!” I said harshly.
“Then go on.”
I looked at him for a long time and then opened my mouth, ready to prove I could do this.
“I …”
“Yes?” he asked impatiently.
“I, Nova …”
“So, your name is Nova?” he asked, sounding so damn intrigued.
Shit …
“No …”
Why did I tell him my name?! Oh fuck, if my brothers could see me right now, they would use this example as to why I could never come out with them again. I shouldn’t give the enemy my name.
“I’m Rhys,” he said.
“Rhys?”
Why did I feel like that name was familiar in some way? Like I had heard someone mention him in some important conversation, but I couldn’t quite figure out why the conversation was important.
“Yes,” he said.
“Rhys, just let me go,” I said.
He smiled suddenly.
“What?”
“It sounds good when you say my name.”
I looked at him shocked and swallowed hard.
“You need to let me go!”
He shook his head.
“I can’t. You are probably my only chance,” he said.
“Of what?!”
“Of having a mate.”
“So, just because I am your only chance, you are willing to be with a rogue?!” I asked him.
He shrugged a little.
“The Goddess didn’t pair us for no reason,” he said.
“Or maybe she is just trying to test you,” I said. “Or me …”
“Why?” he asked.
“Loyalty …”
“To whom?” he asked and smiled. “To each other?”
“To our families.”
“Rogues have families?” he asked me.
I rolled my eyes.
“There are a lot of things you don’t know,” I said.
He just nodded a little and then moved back. I thought he was going to let me go, but that was not what he did. He threw me over his shoulder instead and I quickly started to kick the air and slam my hands against his back.
“No! What are you doing?!” I yelled.
“Taking you with me. As you said, there are a lot of things I don’t know and I think you can provide me with answers.”
“No, don’t do this!” I yelled, but he didn’t listen to me, and just took me with him.
