Chapter 39: Breaking A Promise
-Serena-
I woke up with Rogan’s heavy arm around my waist. I had pretty much gone to bed fully dressed and so had he, the blanket only covering the lower part of our legs, so we didn’t get too cold. I knew I wouldn’t feel cold at all with him plastered against my back, keeping me warm and safe. I couldn’t believe I was actually finding comfort in him, but I couldn’t help myself. I even scooted a little closer, and his hand suddenly went to my hip, squeezing a little. I thought he was asleep, but clearly not.
“Don’t do that,” he said.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“Rubbing your enticing ass against me,” he growled in my ear.
Oh … I did it again, and Rogan groaned before grabbing onto me harder, and then burying his face in my neck, kissing and biting it, and making me chuckle a little.
“You’re killing me,” he said.
“I’m not doing anything,” I said.
I heard him move, and then he was hovering over me. I smiled up at him, and he smiled at me. I didn’t know what he was doing to me, but he was making my heart hammer like crazy. I had never thought this would be possible, him and me in the same bed and not even fighting.
“I’m going to make you mine soon,” he said.
“Am I not already?” I asked.
There had never been anyone else anyway, and I could never see myself giving myself over to anyone but him. Rogan had just owned me from the moment we met, and I saw that now. I just hadn’t known that back, when I was running to the people I had thought, were my friends and family.
“There is more to it. Us wolves, we like to mark each other, remember?” he asked.
“Mark each other,” I said, remembering what he had told me.
He nodded and then ran his fingers along my left shoulder.
“On wolves, it is one of the most sensitive places on us. It is so others can see we are already claimed and should stop any idea of pressuring us,” he explained.
“And you want to mark me?” I asked.
He nodded.
“I want everyone to know you’re mine and only mine,” he said.
I wasn’t sure what it was, even if the thought was a little scary, it made me feel excited too.
“When?” I asked.
“Soon. We got some things to take care of right now,” he said.
“What if I want you to do it now?” I asked.
He smiled.
“You always just run right into danger, don’t you?” he asked.
“What can I say? I’m a hunter.”
He shook his head and then kissed me, first slowly before it turned more heated, but he pulled away before it turned too heated.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“I got something I need to take care of first,” he said. “Something I want to finish before I make you mine. I don’t want anything bad to come from it.”
“I don’t understand,” I said. ”Is it because the people here don’t want you to mark me?”
“They … they will be hard to convince, but if they trust me as their alpha, they will trust I won’t do anything that could harm them.”
“I want to help,” I said.
He smiled at me.
“I know and you will get your chance, but I made a promise to someone …”
“A promise?” I asked.
“That night you attacked us … I was …”
“I know what you were doing,” I said.
He nodded a little, looking almost pleased.
“Well … I made a promise and I need to break it now, but I want to explain my side of things you see,” he said. “And when it is over, I want to make you mine because I don’t have to think about that anymore or be concerned about it. You see, it could be seen as a sign of disrespect that I choose to mark you suddenly and I don’t want there to be any bad blood between me and Eric.”
“I understand,” I said.
“You do?!”
“I know what I am … and … and we are supposed to be enemies after all. I can understand you need to be careful with what you do. You got a position to protect and you got me,” I said.
“I will always keep you safe, Serena. It was my job, to begin with,” he said.
I smiled and felt my heart fill with so much warmth.
“I know.”
“I’m glad you understand.”
“Of course. I will help however I can,” I said.
He kissed me shortly and then pulled back, looking at me with such tender eyes.
“What happens exactly when you mark each other?” I asked.
“We become fully connected.”
“What does that mean?”
“Humans make these vows to each other that very few even keep, and they can always just walk away with a simple signature on a piece of paper. That is not the case for werewolves,” he said.
“No?”
He shook his head.
“When we mark each other, that mark becomes permanent, and we can feel what the other feels. Our souls become one,” he explained.
“What?!”
He smiled a little.
“I know you don’t believe in the whole higher power, and that is fine, but this is what we believe.”
“Will … Will you be able to feel what I feel?” I asked.
“I should,” he said.
“Even if I am human?”
He nodded.
“And … And can I feel what you feel?” I asked.
“I believe so.”
“You don’t sound so sure,” I chuckled.
He laughed a little too.
“Well, I don’t have much experience with humans and marking. We will just have to see how it goes,” he said.
“Does it hurt?”
He seemed to think about my question.
“Only in the beginning,” he said.
“And then?”
He moved closer to me, so our faces were only inches away.
“Then it becomes pure pleasure,” he said, his eyes shining a little, and I felt my body turn warmer.
Rogan seemed to sniff the air and then a growl left him, while his eyes continued to shine this yellow color.
“*I can smell your arousal,*” he said darkly.
I felt my cheeks grow hot and I placed my hand on his chest, trying to push him back, but he didn’t move an inch.
“You can smell that too?”
He nodded.
“I can smell a lot of things,” he said and smiled before he moved closer and kissed me again, and I soon leaned into the kiss, wrapping my arms around his neck and letting him kiss me for however long he wanted.
