I watched as my brothers came back, looking happy, while the other fighters were walking behind them, looking just as happy. I knew what they had done tonight. It was the same as any other night they went out. To claim more territory and to create terror. They never wanted me to come though. Even though I wanted to help. I wanted to be part of this. I was not a rogue for nothing, and yet I had never acted like one. I had never before hurt anyone or stolen anything. I felt like a fraud almost. It was not that I wanted to hurt anyone, but I had to contribute too. I had to do something for our group too.
I watched as the door opened, and I quickly moved to the doorway of the living room I was in. My brothers noticed me, but the rest were already walking further into the house, full of goods in their hands and some probably wanted to go shower.
“Any dead?” I asked.
My eldest brother Zane shook his head.
“Nope, it went smoothly, like we knew it would,” he said.
“And wounded?”
“Just a few scratches,” Keith, the youngest of my brothers, said.
I had three, and all of them stood there looking so proud, while I felt like an outsider. Their black eyes were watching me almost like I was a stranger, or maybe I was imagining it. I had those dark eyes too. All rogues did, but it almost felt like I hadn’t earned them, because what was I really doing? Nothing. I was just … living here, stitching my brothers up when they needed it.
“So, when are you going out again?” I asked.
“Soon,” Keith said and walked over to me, wrapping an arm around my neck and bringing me with the rest.
We walked to a bigger living room where everyone was just basking in all the goodies they had found. I watched as people talked and laughed and started counting some of the money in front of them. I placed myself further away, knowing I wasn’t really welcome. It was only my brothers who really spoke much to me because everyone else felt like I was just … leeching off of their hard work. I got why they said it, but it was not that I didn’t want to help, but my brothers wouldn’t let me. Every time I brought up the subject they would shut me down, but I would not back down tonight. I had decided that when we were alone, we were going to discuss this again. It was time I became a real rogue.
So, I let them all enjoy their night until there were only really my brothers left. My brother Keith came over to me, as I sat by a small bar. He bumped his shoulder against mine and smiled before he held out something to me. It was a small bracelet with all these beautiful pendants hanging, such as a wolf, a moon, and stars.
“Keith,” I said, smiling at the beautiful jewelry.
“Of course, I brought something home,” he said and then put it on me.
It felt heavy … too heavy, but I knew it had nothing to do with the bracelet. It was knowing it really belonged to someone else. Why couldn’t I forget that part? My brothers didn’t seem to have any trouble ignoring the fact they had taken other people’s stuff. Keith walked back to the other two, Zane and Jessie. They were all talking together before I decided to join them.
“I want to go with you,” I started.
Everyone turned so damn quiet …
“Nova …” Zane began.
“I want to go out with you. On a real mission,” I said.
They glanced at each other, which annoyed me.
“No, look at me,” I said. “I’m sitting right here.”
“Nova, it is not a good idea,” Jessie said.
“It is!”
“No, it is not,” Zane said harshly, always shutting all of my ideas down.
“But I am a rogue!”
“Yes, but you are not coming out with us. You contribute with other things,” he said.
“Like stitching you up?”
He nodded.
“One out of many,” he said.
I shook my head.
“No, it’s wrong. I should be out there with you guys!” I said.
My brothers did not look happy, and I could already see the answer in their eyes.
“Guys!”
“Nova, we have discussed this,” Zane said. “It’s a no.”
“No, it’s a yes! It has to be.”
“Why?” Jessie asked. “Are you not happy here? Are you not safe?”
I nodded.
“Of course, but—”
“But then there is nothing to discuss,” Zane said.
I looked at my brother angrily.
“But there is!”
He shook his head.
“Nova, you’re staying home,” he said.
“Why?!”
“Because we say so!”
“And are you my parents?!” I asked, annoyed.
That always struck a core when I brought up my parents. They had done what was almost impossible. Rogues didn’t like to work together in big groups, like real packs, but they were able to bring people together. Sadly, they had been killed a few years back by pack members, and my brothers swore they would get their revenge. I guessed it was why they never felt guilty about anything they did.
“Nova, you are not going. End of discussion!” Zane said.
“How can it be the end of discussion if there hasn’t even been one?!” I asked, annoyed.
“Because we are not risking your life!”
“I’m a rogue! And you trained me to fight.”
“It is different out there,” he said. “We trained you to protect yourself. Not to seek out danger.”
“You seek out danger all the time!”
“Nova!”
“Come on!” I said. “I’m done hiding and being called a weakling.”
“Who says that?” Keith asked, sounding angry.
I shook my head, not wanting to discuss that. My brothers were rarely at home much, so of course, they didn’t hear what people were saying about me.
“Forget it.”
“No, if someone is treating you badly, you need to tell us,” Keith said.
“No one is treating me badly! No one barely even talks to me,” I said.
My brothers seemed shocked to hear this, and I groaned, frustrated.
“I need to earn my place here.”
“You have,” Zane said.
I shook my head.
“No, I’m your sister, and therefore no one says anything. It is not the same!” I said.
“Nova …”
“No! I need to prove myself,” I said.
“You have!” Zane said again. “You help us a lot.”
“Not in the way I should.”
“Nova, it is not happening,” he said. “You are staying home.
“But …”
I looked at my other brothers, but I knew they wouldn’t come to my rescue. Once Zane had made a decision, they went with that. I angrily shook my head, before standing up, and walking out of the room, but if they thought this was over, they were wrong. I would find a way to get out of here and prove myself. I just needed a good plan.
