“It's enough! It's enough already. I'm tired of this back and forth with you, Jeffrey. I told you that you are not allowed to be seen with me at this time but you wouldn't listen to me. What exactly is your problem?”. Bethany yelled in a cold voice while trying to suppress the anger in her chest.
“I'm so sorry, Benny. I didn't know that this would make you so angry. I just wanted t give you a surprise since today is a great day for you”. Jeffrey tried to persuade her to calm down.
Seeing the expression on his face and hearing how cool his voice was, Bethany had no choice but to calm down and listen to his explanation.
“I only wanted to come to see you and go back to the hotel immediately, I didn't.......”.
“It's fine. Have you had anything to eat or drink yet?” Bethany asked in a calm voice as she turned her gaze on him.
Jeffrey simply nodded his head.
“No, how could I have anything to eat? I came here immediately after the emergency surgery, so I didn't have enough time to think about food”. He replied in a casual tone as his eyes darted around the room inquisitively.
“I knew, you wouldn't eat. You don't care about your health even though you are a doctor yourself, I'll go arrange some food for you now” Bethany said as she turn around to go back to the kitchen.
“Hey! hold on, why would you want to stress yourself cooking for us when I'm here to do the work? You are sick, so don't you stress yourself, do you hear me?” He warned while squinting at her with a bright smile on his face. “You should have a seat, I've already ordered some food for us before you came back earlier, the delivery man should be here at any moment”.
“If that's the case then, I should get some drinks from the freezer for you,” Bethany said as she made her way to the kitchen.
Within a twinkle of an eye, she came back with a packet of fruit drinks and some alcoholic beverages.
Just as she finished keeping the drinks on the table and was about to leave the room, she suddenly heard the doorbell ring out involuntarily.
Before she could have a look, she saw that Jeffrey also stood up to answer the door.
“You should down here, I'll go answer the door first. I think it's the delivery man ringing the bell” Bethany said as she noticed that Jeffrey was about to go answer the door.
“Are you? Okay then” He took his seat and brought out his cell phone.
Bethany spared him a few glances before heading toward the door.
When Jeffrey noticed that Bethany had gone away from close sight, a smirk soon arose on his lips.
“At least, she didn't chase me out like she's always done”.
Soon after, Bethany walked back into the living room carrying several packets of fast food–She looked displeased and surprised with how extraordinarily ample the takeouts were.
“Why have you ordered so much food? Are you trying to feed the entire nation?” Bethany asked while weighing the package in her hands. She was frowning deeply.
Hearing her questions from behind, Jeffrey stood up immediately to go help her out with the packets.
“I don't mind feeding the entire nation if only it will melt your heart. Moreover, it's a big day for you, so I wanted to make a grand......” Jeffrey blurted out without paying attention to his words by the time his eyes fell on Bethany, he immediately shut his mouth as he recalled that Bethany didn't want to hear of it.
He took the packets from her hands and brought them to the dining while Bethany went over to the kitchen to get the plates and cutlery. She came back with them, Jeffrey took the plates from her and lay the tables.
“You still haven't told me why you are here, Jeffrey. Are you here with some agendas? What do you have in mind” Bethany suddenly asked in the middle of dinner.
Not expecting this question, Jeffrey choked on the piece of meat in his mouth. he coughed out loudly while darting around to get the glass of juice.
He quickly gulp down the content of the glass, then he heaved a sigh of relief as the meat was finally washed down.
“What are you saying, Benny? I already told you why I came back so suddenly. Moreover, the hospital needed my attention as well” Jeffrey replied as he turned his gaze away from her reach–He looked away to avoid being caught lying as he very well know how much of a detective Bethany was.
“You should focus on the main reason why Lulu is here, I don't need your help with anything right now, and neither want you to help me out in the future, this is my fight, so let me do things my way and only interfere when I ask you to” Bethany ordered in a cold, expressionless tone as she didn't bother looking up at him.
Jeffrey was hurt by this but he still maintains the casual expression on his face as he tries to change the topic.
“This house isn't fit for you, Benny, I mean look at where you are staying at. I don't like you staying here all alone. What if something happens to you? Why don't you come to stay with me at the Bluemel mansion, it will be more comfortable and convenient for you over there” He suggested looking around the place with scrutinizing gazes.
He looked disgusted by the condition of the condominium, and he couldn't find his displeasure behind his smile.
“If you don't like here then I suggest you leave right now. I'm fine living here, so I don't need you to tell me what I'm supposed to do and most importantly, I won't let you decide where I should or should not stay. You should eat up, it's late”.
Bethany sounded annoyed however, the expression on her face remained the same as she pushes the plates of rib congee toward Jeffrey.
“It's not what I mean, Benny, I was just worried about you”.
“You should eat up, it's not good to return home so late.” Bethany urged with a note of finality.
“Fine! You always have your way with me anyway”.
After saying that, he digs into the plate of food in front of him without any form of disinclination.
Bethany simply watched him from the corners of her eyes as she was not interested in the food in front of her.
Although she had denied the fact this day was indeed significant to her journey, she couldn't erase the fact that it is what it is no matter how much she tries to forget about the pain that she was subjected to.
Thinking about this, Bethany was so lost in thought that she didn't realize that Jeffrey was done with his meal and was focusing on her with dreamy eyes.
Bethany was well aware of this but she pretends not to know anything.
“Where are you lost, Benny? What are you thinking about?”
Jeffrey asked as he fixed his gaze on her intensively.
“Are you done? I should get you some desserts from the fridge”
Bethany was about to leave when Jeffrey called out to her.
“You shouldn't worry about that matter anymore. I'll have everything covered” He spoke solemnly.
Bethany was transducer to her tracks upon hearing what he said. She wanted to refute but she couldn't find the word to describe what she wanted.
She decided to kick against the idea of exchanging words with him.
“It's very late, I should get going now. I'll keep updated about the development of the proposal you sent to me” Jeffrey said as he glanced at the wristwatch on his wrist.
After saying that, he stood up and walked toward the door. Bethany watched until he got to the exit then she trailed after him to lock the door.
She looked pensive but she managed to let out a smile at him.
Jeffrey took a few steps away and stops at the entrance while looking at Bethany with an admiring gaze.
“You should look after yourself Jeff, and stop trying to be a nuisance’
” Bethany said.
“Haha!, I'm the doctor around here, why would you have to do my duty on my behalf? I'm taking care of myself aren't I ?”.
“I can see you are”
Bethany replied as she held onto the knob of the door and was about to love up when Jeffrey suddenly bounced back into the house and pulled her into a warm hug.
Jeffrey gave her a quick hug and instantly pulled away even before she had the chance to scold him for his unruly behavior.
After disengaging from the hug, he flashed a smile at her without saying a word. He simply glared at Bethany with a smile on his face.
“You should look after your leg, it's still swollen. Goodbye”
He gave a few words before swerving around and leaving in large strides.
Bethany snickered and slammed the door right after he left.
She went back to the living room to look for her phone. Immediately, she found it lying around on the couch, she picked it up and headed upstairs.
“What? Such a huge incident took place and you didn't even think about telling me? What do you take me for? furniture? furniture that you make use of whenever you feel like it?”
Erica twirled around in exasperation as she shouted involuntarily.
Bethany quickly took the phone away from her ears as the loud noise from the other side of the phone was too loud for her to bear.
Erica's high-pitched voice was too loud and it echoed louder with each passing second.
“Why have you hidden such a big matter from me, Benny? wait! Who would want to harm you in the first place? Have you harbored some enemies for yourself after coming back?” Erica sounded worried and annoyed at the same time.“ I told you to keep away from those people, but you wouldn't listen to me at all. What would I have done if anything happens to you? Didn't you think of Jenna and me when you decided to set up your life as bait to get to him?”
“Will you let me speak first? ”
“What else do you have to say to me?”
