Chapter 203: The Mate I Rejected

Alessandro's Pov

“ANSWER ME!”

I bellowed, the rage and despair in my tone making my voice roll out as a resonance through the entire place.

Only then did Alpha John lift his head, his countenance ashen, as if with the specter of some memory he had hid away too long that looked back at him from his eyes.

“Tell him, John. Tell him the truthful background of how you wouldn’t let Alessandro and my daughter be together until you found out she was royal,”

Alpha Tony said with a cold voice, letting out a breath, and moving toward the door.

Alpha John visibly stressed, tried to control his emotions, and used his hand to smooth his hair as his jaw went down abruptly.

“Can you all give us some privacy? I need to discuss this with only my son.”

Alpha Tony gave a nod and reacted with his eyes a bit more than usual instructing my father not to do anything wrong and then exiting the room.

Aurora who had been holding the hand I yanked away, gave me a reassuring smile and kept, “I am just down the hall if you need me.”

I gave my smile that barely seemed real and nodded. She returned it with a subdued one and then left the office not forgetting to close the door behind her.

The instant she left, I turned around and stared at my dad.

“No one is here, Father. So go ahead and say what you have to.”

John Alpha sank down into his chair as if he had centuries of guilt clinging to him. The fingers of his left hand dug into the armrest while he avoided looking at me.

“Alessandro, my son, I didn’t want to tell you about this because I felt it was not important…”

“And because you feared how I might feel?” I added, my voice sharp and defensive.

He seemed unsure of what to do, and his mouth moved as if he wanted to say something, but at the same time, it closed as if the words were unbearably hot for his throat.

“Father, if you don’t tell me I’ll go and ask Alpha Tony” I snarled, getting closer to him and lowering my voice.

“And you know that won’t be good. So spill it.”

I spoke as if launching a threat against him, my words dripping with venom, and decorated with my rage.

Finally, his eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw the fear in them not the fear of Alpha Tony, not of enemies, but of me.

****

I only found out that the Moon Goddess never gave me a mate when I was just eighteen.

My brother, Raymond, got his mate which was your mother and I… I was mate-less."

My father’s voice got choked, and his eyes were full of bitterness.

"It made me jealous of Raymond."

Hе removed his face from his hands and yet the shame was still visible.

"I did it all, Alessandro. I roamed, I prayed, I implored the Moon Goddess to give me a mate. But I got nothing. I was void. Alone."

Now his voice quivered, the glimpses from his past were visible.

"Then one time, while I was with the betas and just about to end the session I got a scent. Hers.

The first time in my existence, I caught the bond of a mate with full clarity. I left my weapon on the ground and ran, thanking the Moon Goddess for finally hearing me out.

For giving me someone to love at last. My heart... it was going wild. I thought it was my suffering that had reached its end."

He was looking far away, caught up in the memory of that moment. His chest felt the hard and fast rising and falling.

"But when I saw her..."

He took a deep breath and slowly his shoulders sank.

"You what, father?"

I eagerly inquired, curiosity and dread tearing at me.

He took a deep breath and his mouth was bitter.

"I was not happy about it.

Yes, the Moon Goddess gave me a mate... but my mate was another beta.

A slave. One of the wolves living in the pack mansion that was the least ranked."

The pupils of my eyes expanded. A slave? That was unimaginable.

"She seemed delicate, without power and unworthy of me or at least so I believed at that time," my dad said, his voice full of regret.

"I felt... insulted. Ashamed. The Almighty Alpha John, fated to a slave."

He exhaled weakly.

"And that was when my inner turmoil that I always kept from you started..."

The heaviness of emotion was apparent in my father’s voice as his next words were spoken.

"I rejected her, Alessandro. There and then. I saw her by her eyes that had brightened the moment she understood that I was her mate and I told her that she wasn’t the one for me.

That I wouldn’t be the one to take her. She sank down sobbing, calling the Moon Goddess for a change in her destiny." His voice broke.

"But I didn’t look at her, nor did I stop."

I felt a cold shiver run over my back.

Absolutely! Here's a polished and emotionally intense version of that scene, keeping it in Alessandro’s POV:

“You turned your back on your destined partner?” My own words were barely audible, trembling with disbelief.
“Indeed,” he replied, his voice heavy, his face stern yet shadowed with what seemed like deep remorse.
I leaned forward, my chest tight, trying to process what he was saying.
“Then… after I married your mother,” he continued slowly, swallowing hard as if the memory burned him,
“I found out later that my mate the one I rejected couldn’t bear the pain of me being with another.
She… she couldn’t survive the thought that she would never be claimed by me, that she would never know my love fully…”
His eyes darkened, haunted.
“She… committed suicide, Alessandro.
Because she felt unworthy, because she believed she would never find a mate, never be loved.”
I stumbled back, my hand gripping the edge of the desk. My breath caught in my throat.
“You… you’re telling me this now?” I whispered, shock and fury intertwining.
“All this time… and you never told anyone? You let her die in silence while you—”
“I was young, reckless, blind with pride,” he interrupted, his voice breaking.
“I thought power, status… being Alpha… would matter more than the bond I was born to protect. I thought I could choose, and I was wrong. So wrong.”
The weight of his confession hung between us like a storm cloud, suffocating and inescapable.
“And Aurora?” I asked, my voice low, barely holding back the storm of questions swirling inside me.
“How… how does this connect to her?”
Alpha Tony let out a long, heavy sigh, his eyes dark with memories I couldn’t begin to imagine.
Then, finally, he looked at me with a gravity that made my chest tighten.
“She’s Aurora’s aunt,” he said slowly, each word weighted with meaning.
“Alpha Tony’s sister.”
