Chapter 207: When Blood Betrays
Chapter 207: When Blood Betrays
Alessandro’s POV
“Well, well, well. Isn’t this adorable?”
Maverick’s sarcastic tone echoed throughout the corridor as he clapped with mock enthusiasm and flashed his smirk, both wide and venomous.
He did not rush to us but instead came forward slowly, making a show of measured and deliberate steps as if the air permeated by his own would not be enough for him to breathe.
Alpha Tony without any signs of emotion on his face looked at him.
“Maverick, what brings you here?”
Alpha John’s voice was like a knife cutting the air, “What the hell are you doing here, Maverick?”
Maverick rolled his eyes and shrugged carelessly.
“Er... dah. We’re about to become relatives, aren’t we? That’s the main reason why I came here.
Oh, and besides…” with a glance at Aurora he added “… I caught the rumor that the council had some issue with ridding the pack of an unsettling problem.”
I immediately moved in front of Aurora protecting her with my body. My jaw dropped and I felt like my chest was doing push-ups.
“Don’t you dare refer to her as a problem.”
Simultaneously, he lifted his hands as if he were surrendering and let out a dark laugh,
“Oops! Someone’s got a temper.
Take it easy, Alessandro. It’s not that I’ve come to attack your pretty little mate but I am here to talk about something serious.
We decided that we want to bring the wedding closer.”
My gut turned over. “What?”
Maverick’s smile grew from ear to ear.
“Yes. Lena and Leonardo will get married the very next day. On the night of the full moon.”
It was my father’s voice which roared before I could say anything.
“Why such a haste, Maverick?” His look was full of rage.
Maverick answered very slowly as if he were on a luxury cruise, turning to my father,
“Because... my daughter can’t wait to be Leonardo’s wife. And, if we’re talking about the matter of motherhood, only one will be the closest to you.”
His eyes sparkled with a vile reflection of satisfaction.
“After all, she’s the one who’s about to give you a grandson.”
The air stood still.
Alpha John’s face was creased with confusion and his words came out sharp, “She… has done the ultrasound?”
Maverick grinned, nodded, and said, “Definitely. And, John, you know the rule.
If the firstborn son gives his Alpha father a grandson, then he—” he turned his look to me, darkening and sharpening like a blade against the throat
“—is the one who has the right to be the next Alpha of the pack and not…”
He stopped for a moment, letting it sink in “…your second son.”
Furious, my blood seemed to harden, I clenched my fists until my knuckles cracked, and my wolf inside screamed for release.
However, Maverick only smiled wider, knowing full well that he attacked at the softest spot of mine.
“Not your second son,” Maverick sneered, his gaze burning into me like acid.
My vision blurred red. My body trembled with rage, my wolf clawing at my skin. I stepped forward, fists clenched so tight my veins popped.
“You slimy bastard!”
I growled, my voice shaking the hall.
“You dare stand here and speak of heirs as if this is some kind of auction?
You dare use my brother and that—”
I pointed at him, my hand trembling, “—that poisonous daughter of yours to bargain your way into power?”
Maverick laughed, slow and deep.
“Bargain?
Oh no, Alessandro. This isn’t a bargain.
It’s a fact. The bloodline speaks louder than your temper.”
I lunged before I could stop myself. My hand gripped his collar, and I slammed him against the nearest pillar so hard the wood cracked.
“Say that again!”
I snarled, my fangs threatening to break free. My wolf was roaring inside, demanding blood.
“Alessandro!”
Alpha John’s command cut the air like thunder, but I couldn’t let go.
Not when Maverick’s smirk stayed plastered across his face like he enjoyed every ounce of my fury.
“You think you scare me?”
Maverick hissed, his breath hot in my face.
“You’re nothing but your father’s second mistake. A second-born son with no claim once Lena delivers a grandson.”
I roared and drew my fist back, ready to crush his jaw—
“Alessandro, stop!”
Aurora’s voice cracked, desperate, from behind me.
But Maverick’s next words froze me in place.
“And let’s not forget…”
He chuckled wickedly. “…your precious mate standing there?
She’s not even safe. Because once Leonardo weds Lena, and she gives birth to a boy, Aurora will be declared… irrelevant.
She’ll have no place in this pack. And you…” He grinned wider.
“…will have to choose between her and your birthright.”
My entire body shook.
“You filthy—”
I slammed him harder into the pillar, wood splintering under the force.
“ENOUGH!”
Alpha Tony finally barked, his voice cracking like a whip.
“Maverick, this is not the way to bring your case before the council.”
But Maverick wasn’t done. His eyes glittered with malice as he whispered loud enough for all to hear.
“Oh, I haven’t even revealed the best part.”
Alpha John’s expression darkened.
“What are you talking about?”
Alpha John demanded, his voice deepening like thunder.
Maverick tilted his head toward Aurora, a cruel smile twisting his lips.
“Oh, didn’t you tell him, Alpha Tony?” he said almost playfully, but his words dripped poison.
“Your precious sister, Valeri…. was pregnant and she never revealed the father of the child.”
The room went still.
Alpha John’s body went rigid; his intake of breath was shallow. I released Maverick from my hold.
“What?” I croaked, my throat burning.
With a lingering smile, Maverick savored every moment of the silence he had brutally imposed upon the room.
“Exactly. Valeri… the sister of Alpha Tony. The very one who left her responsibility, who rejected her lineage, who made the scission that almost annihilated Alpha Tony’s pack, that is not too long ago…”
He let the suspense stay while his eyes played with wickedness.
“And now—” his voice rose, echoing across the chamber, “—she has a child. And do you know who the father was?”
The exclamations were abrupt and ragged, the heaviness of his statements pressing down like weighty stones.
“No…”
Alpha Tony stammered, his hand going straight to his chest. His voice quaked.
“It is not possible—”
He twirled his look towards John, who was utterly baffled by it all.
“What… are you talking about, Maverick?
A child?
For whom?
Me?”
His voice broke.
“That’s impossible. I never di—”
However, before he could utter one more word, Tony sprang forth. With a grimy growl marking his rage, he grabbed John’s collar and shook him hard.
“You son of a bitch!”
Tony shouted, his voice hoarse from years of suppressed anger.
“You slept with my sister and after that you rejected her?!
How can it be possible that you did it?!
Are you out of your mind?!
She was so in love with you?”
