Aurora’s POV
My father slowly nodded his head, his eyes getting warmer.
“Yeah, I know. As a matter of fact, once I saw how he confronted John, I was sure he was nothing like his father.
He really loves you, Aurora. It doesn’t matter to him that you are not from a pack, or even from a high-bloodline.
All he’s ever cared about... is being your mate.”
I didn’t expect so much to touch me. His words hit me hard, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Alessandro is certainly a lot of things I have always heard of," my father continued with a tone that showed he was deep in thought.
"He was the son of the Alpha John who was the most ruthless, the one that was put in charge of fights and the like.
They said that he didn’t care for anyone, and that he was very merciless.
He was very cold, very heartless... he was just like his father. And I can relate when I once met him, I saw the same thing, that void in his eyes.
No sympathy.
No humanity left in him."
I frowned. My mind was still working. It was true. Alessandro I knew then was like that and we hated each other, but that was because I didn’t know him.
When I got to know him, he became the man who wiped away my tears, who stuck by me when I had a breakdown, and who vowed to fight the world just to keep me safe?
Interrupting my thoughts was my father’s cracked voice.
"I was confident he would turn into another Alpha John as soon as he became the one to supersede him.
However, I got to know that he faced his father… for you. That he opposed Alpha John because he was in love with a beta girl who had no lineage and was not from a noble house."
He gave me a solid look as if it was still a surprise to him that he made that decision.
"Then came the gossip," he said with a scowl.
"Gossip of Leonardo getting married to the daughter of Alpha Maverick. Of Alessandro getting crazy because of a lowborn.
The talk was everywhere about the sons of Alpha John: the one weak that got tangled up with a cruel and ambitious Luna-to-be... and the strong one that fell for a nobody.
The mighty bloodline of Alpha John… disgraced."
The feeling of breathlessness remained in my chest. I already knew what was said about me and us.
"I wanted to know more," my father said softly.
"That was when I found out that the beta girl with no lineage was the one who had mated to the son of the father of the pack.
My daughter. And you were mated to Alessandro, son of Alpha John."
He sighed deeply, his eyes brightening with some feeling that I had long not noticed—guilt.
"I did not hesitate a second to leave the pack and go to your aid before you did something that I would never forgive myself for.
I didn’t want you to die the same way Valeri died. I am probably a terrible father but I still wanted to protect you. At least the one time."
His words floated ominously. My throat was constricted and I couldn’t decide for a moment whether to yell at him or to cry into his chest like the little girl who used to ask for his love.
He then went back to the office, leaving me there in silence. I felt my ribs come under pressure.
He was alien to my understanding. I couldn’t figure him out.
Waiting for a long time, each minute heavier than the last. What were they talking about inside?
Why was the conversation Alessandro wanted to have with him alone?
Then finally, the door was opened. My father came out first, his face unreadable but his eyes connecting to mine with a weight that I didn’t understand.
And behind him… there was Alessandro.
The instant my eyes met his, the pit in my stomach grew. He looked pale and as if he was affected by the experience of being a man who had just come through a hard ordeal, a world he had to carry on his shoulders.
My face flushed and my heart went into overdrive.
I started running towards him and took hold of his hands, "What... what is it, Alessandro?
What did he tell you?”
He ignored my question and only looked at me with those lost eyes from another world.
The silence felt like a knife stabbing my chest and my thoughts of worry growing bigger and bigger until they were really almost unbearable.
What happened? What did my father say to him?
But then… slowly his lips turned up. Then wider and wider. A smile burst forth on his face, a smile that I had never witnessed before.
Bright.
Alive.
Free.
"FINALLY!" he exclaimed joyfully, his voice resounding with jubilation.
I stared at him in surprise, "Finally… what?”
Before I could make it out, Alessandro had his arms round me. He lifted me up and threw me into the air, his laughter escaping from his throat as if he had just been released from a prison of chains and freedom was his only thought.
"WE CAN BE TOGETHER, AURORA!" he shouted, his voice quivering with delight.
My eyes grew larger. "What?!"
"Yes!" he said joyfully as he hugged me close as if he was never going to let me go.
"No more barriers.
No more secrets.
Nothing hinder us."
"Oh my God," I breathed out as if in shock. Tears of disbelief welled up in my eyes as my heart pounded my ribs.
He put his forehead against mine and his smile which was already there deepened.
"Aurora… we are finally mates. This time nothing will tear us apart."
The feeling of heaviness in my chest was gone for the first time in what seemed like ages and replaced by an almost suffocating hope.
My heart was so full of joy that his words felt like the warmest, coziest blanket of the whole world that I had ever felt. For the first time ever, I let myself really believe that happiness was ours to take.
Yet in the quiet of our chuckles and sobs, I heard it.
A slow clap.
Sharp.
Mocking.
We stopped.
Alessandro was turning with me when, by the confused look on his face and the un-bolted door of my dad’s office, the silhouette that had just fallen across the hallway floor was already there, stretching, long, and menacing.
And the voice that made my blood run cold came next.
“Well, isn’t this heartwarming?”
I felt my heart sink to the ground. That voice was familiar.
Alpha Maverick.
