Chapter 183
**Megan**
As soon as Logan walked through the back door, Max took it upon himself to jump onto the bench swing and lay between my legs on top on the blanket. I smile and give his face a rub.
“You know full well he’s not going to be happy,” I say to him, he just looks at me with his tongue flopping out of his mouth and his clear blue eye and brown eye giving me the puppy dog eyes. “Don’t give me that look, it’s not my fault,” I coo to him. He’s honestly the cutest dog ever.
His ears suddenly perk up, and he gets up to jump off the swing. I frown at him as he looks at the back door and tilts his head.
“What’s up, boy?” I ask as I give him a stroke. “He’ll be back in a minute,” Max pulls my blanket off with his teeth and starts to draw on the sleeve of my shirt I’m wearing. “Hey. Max stop it,” I say. He whimpers and then paces. “What’s wrong?” I frown and stand up. I then hear the back door open. “See he’s back,” Max growls then barks. I turn to look at Logan only it’s not Logan. Stood at the doorway of the house is Jonathon.
My heart almost beats out of my chest as I stare at him. Max starts barking and growling at him. Looking down at Max, I see just how vicious he can be. Moving my fingers under his collar, I hold him between my legs as I glare at Jonathon.
“Leave,” I order. Jonathon tilts his head and smirks. I watch as he slowly moves towards me. Max starts to bark louder, and I know someone will hear him.
“This is technically my house,” he says and steps closer. Max growls and lunges forward. I hold him back and stroke his back. It’s then I notice Jonathon is holding one of the fire pokers and there’s blood dripping from it. I frown before looking at the door he came from. “Are you expecting that dumb-fuck you’re screwing?” he asks. I gulp down my fear and try to think of a way out of this. Jonathan holds the poker up and looks at the end. “I’m afraid, he’s dead,” he states, and I feel like I’ve forgotten how to breathe. He grins as he watches the blood slowly drip down the iron bar. I put two and two together and realise he’s not lying. “It’s your turn, now, I’m going to enjoy this so much,” he excitedly says and steps towards me.
“Get him,” I urge Max as I let go of him and run as fast as I can. I hear Jonathon curse. Glancing behind me, I see Max has gone straight to biting him.
Running past the pool house towards the forest, I hear Max whimper and then the sound of Jonathon running after me. I get into the woods, and it’s so dark I can’t see a thing. The only thing that’s lighting my way is moonlight. It’s even more difficult when I’m barefooted. I trip a few times over raised roots and rocks, but I keep my balance although it slows me down.
“You bitch,” he shouts, and by the sound of it, he’s close.
It’s then I feel arms around me. I fall onto the floor and turn. Jonathan punches me in the face. I fight back and knee him in the ribs. He howls in pain, so I do it again to flip us over, so I’m on top. I punch him in the face as hard as I can as many times as I can. He grabs my hair and pulls before throwing me off him. Without giving him a chance, I set off running again.
Knowing the layout of this forest gives me the upper hand.
“Megan, don’t run away, sweetheart,” he says with a laugh as I find an enormous tree that is the perfect hiding spot. I hide behind it as I try to catch my breath. “You better not be hiding from me,” he growls, “do you remember what happened last time you hid from me,” he threatens.
Moving my hand to my mouth, I try my best not to make a sound as he’s so close. Closing my eyes, the things he said on the terrace hit me. Logan is dead. He’s probably killed Max too. Closing my eyes, I try to compose myself. If I make a noise now, he’ll find me.
I need to calm down. If I can get back to the house, I can get to David.
After a couple of minutes, I hear people shouting my name, and it sounds like Carl, Brett and some of the security. Relief washes through me, but I know I can’t move. I can hear Jonathon. Looking around the tree, I make out a figure standing about twenty yards from me. I go back to my hiding position and take a deep breath. I need to let people know where I am but if I do he’ll know. Looking one more time, I make up my mind.
I’ll shout and run at the same time. It’s the only way. Turning back, I’m met with a figure and hand clamps around my mouth. Fear takes hold of me as I go to scream.
“Shh,” the figure says and looks behind the tree I’m hiding behind. “It’s ok,” relief washes over me as my ears register the accent. Tears flow from me as I take him in.
Logan stands holding his hand over my mouth; blood covers the side of his head. He watches Jonathon but slowly pulls me into a hug and drops his hand from my mouth.
“I thought you were dead,” I whisper and feel myself start to cry at just saying those words out loud.
“I need you to listen to me,”
“You’re bleeding,” I say and slowly move my fingers over his head wound.
“I’ll be ok, listen to me, you need to go back to the house,”
“No, Logan,”
“Trust me,” he says, then I hear movement, and then someone whispers something. I look behind him to see Carl standing looking around. “Go back to the house, David is there, we’ll deal with him,” he explains. I got to argue, but he moves his hands to my face. “Please, Megan, you’ll be safer there, he won’t trackback,” he begs. I close my eyes and nod. “It’s going to be ok,” he says, and I feel his lips on my forehead. “I love you,”
“I love you too,” I say and feel the tears escape me.
“I’ll be ok,” he says. I nod. I open my eyes to look into his bright blue ones. With the moonlight, they look like a dark sapphire blue.
“He has me,” Carl says. I smile a little and move away from them.
“Just be careful,” I say, and as quietly as I can, I make my way towards the house.
A sense of relief washes over me when I reach the forest line, and I can see the house. I see that David’s bedroom light is on, so I’m guessing Lorraine is there. Setting off in a run, I get back to the house.
