The mad beast
Raphael’s POV
The disrespect around me was loud and clear, and honestly, it was exhausting. It just showed how the knights had been treating my mate, Ava, behind my back. The murmurs and snickers about her being “unworthy” made my blood boil. I would do anything to protect her from everyone’s spiteful intentions.
"I won’t tolerate another insult from any of you," I mind-linked to them firmly. "I’ll let it slide today. But next time, there will be serious consequences." Instantly, all the knights went silent, fear flashing across their faces. They bowed their heads in shame, clearly realizing the danger they were in. Maybe they’d forgotten how ruthless life was before Ava came into my world, and perhaps they needed a reminder.
"Let’s tear them apart and feed their flesh to the Rogues," growled Grey, my wolf, inside my mind. His anger surged through me like a dark storm, thickening the air around us. I could feel my deadly aura spreading. The weaker knights were already dropping to their knees, feeling their energy drain, while my strength only grew. If I didn’t rein this in, Ava could get hurt too, unable to withstand the full power of my aura.
"My king, the ministers are waiting for you," Caleb said, trying to snap me out of it. But the problem wasn’t just me; it was Grey. He was fighting for control, demanding to unleash chaos and rampage.
"It’s alright, Caleb," I answered, even though I was struggling. Ever since Ava came into my life, she’s been my anchor. She’s helped me keep Grey, the cursed beast of a wolf, under control. Grey gets restless if he doesn’t get his way, which usually leads to a violent mess. That’s part of the curse of being an immortal Lycan.
Lycans normally live between 500 to 700 years, no more, no less. And they’re nearly impossible to kill because of their incredible strength, speed, and healing abilities. That’s why they were chosen to rule this realm; no one else could.
But I couldn’t keep Grey at bay this time. I was losing the battle.
"Caleb, get me out of here!" I whispered urgently, not wanting Ava to see me in such a weak state. Grey was bloodthirsty, and he wouldn’t rest until the knights who insulted Ava paid for it.
Sensing the desperation in my voice, Caleb took charge immediately.
“Gemma, get Ava out of here and have her ready for the banquet,” he ordered. Gemma nodded, understanding the urgency.
"Raphael, are you alright?" Ava’s soft voice was full of worry as she reached out, placing her hand on my temple. Her scent filled my senses, making Grey even more restless. Instead of calming down, he grew more insistent.
"Must claim mate! Let me out! I need to mark her as mine," Grey roared.
"No, Grey, we can’t. Ava will be terrified if we do. We must hold back," I said, struggling to keep him contained. But Grey wasn’t listening, and I felt my grip slipping. Soon, it would be too late to stop him.
"Caleb, now!" I yelled in his mind.
He flinched from the force of my thought, but quickly took action. Gemma grabbed Ava’s hand and led her away. Ava tried to stay, to ask questions, but Gemma pulled her along firmly, keeping her away from me. I watched her go, praying she wouldn’t see me like this.
"You’re all dismissed!" Caleb barked at the knights. They scattered immediately, fear evident in every step. They knew they were on thin ice with me, and that if this happened again, there’d be no mercy.
"How dare you, you weak man!" Grey roared in my head, his anger so intense that the skies darkened with storm clouds. Rain started pouring, lightning dancing around the clouds. He was trying to wreak havoc. But I couldn’t let him.
"Caleb, activate the binding spell," I instructed, leaning heavily on him as we moved quickly down dark hallways toward a hidden chamber. This was the place where I was brought whenever Grey lost control, a room meant for one purpose only, to hold me in check.
"Are you sure, Raphael? You’ll need to be at the banquet," Caleb asked, concern in his voice.
"It’s either this or everyone’s life! I can’t keep the beast at bay," I replied, barely holding on. Grey got even more frenzied when he was hungry for blood.
Without hesitation, Caleb began the ritual. He chanted the spell, his voice echoing through the chamber. A glow filled the room, red and white lights reeling in circles, tightening around me. The binding spell wrapped around my body, binding me down with chains of light. The pain was intense, but I braced myself to endure it.
This binding ritual was agony, even though I’d gone through it countless times. It was a curse that I had to bear, a price I paid for my immortality and violent history. Back in the old days, people used to call me the Mad King. The thought of Ava ever seeing this side of me terrified me more than anything.
"I’ll be back in three hours," Caleb assured me, giving me a steady look before closing the heavy door. I was left alone, struggling against Grey, who was fighting with everything he had, clawing at my mind, trying to take over.
It was hard to remember where it had all begun, but one thing was clear, I had always regretted my curse. People close to me could die, but I would live on and on, watching them leave me. I had to see my parents age and die once they turned the appropriate five hundred for Lycan. They had aged gracefully, but I had hoped I’d be like them someday. I had no idea I’d still be alive now, forced to see everyone around me disappear.
When my parents passed, the curse hadn’t fully taken over. I still hoped to find my mate, the one who could ground me. But even as the centuries passed, my mate never came. And Grey grew more savage, craving violence and destruction to fill the void of his missing mate. I remembered how I was always filled with rage, taking countless lives without mercy at the slightest provocation.
Then the Moon Goddess decided to punish me. I would live without a mate for eternity, unable to die. And true to her word, I searched the world and found no one, no one who stirred a mate bond in me. I gave up on finding love, on finding a mate.
But then, Ava came into my life. She was the one I had stopped believing in, the one I thought I would never find. So, if anyone dared to hurt her, I wouldn’t hold back. I would burn down the entire world if that’s what it took to protect her.
Finally, the binding spell took full hold of me, and I felt myself slipping, the darkness of unconsciousness wrapping around me.
