Chapter 79: A visit to the past

Ava’s POV

A cold chill slid up my spine. It’s a sensation I shouldn’t feel, well, not as a spirit, not when I’ve been numb for so long.

Besides, spirits shouldn't be feeling anything right. Here, I was feeling how cold it was. I turned to the children, worried about them.

Alasia stands before me, obstructing my view of the children, her pale blue eyes glowing like an abyss that could swallow me whole. A twisted smile tugs at her lips, neither warm nor cruel-just...more like, an all knowing smile.

"Come, little spirit," she murmurs, tilting her head. "Let’s take a walk through the past." What does she mean by that? It wasn't enough that she wants my body, now she wants to act like a friend.

Without notice, a sudden force yanks me forward. My surroundings fade, the prison cell dissolving into darkness. The children’s frightened screams fade into nothingness.

Then, a breath. Not mine. A gasp, my gasp.

I stagger a bit, feeling solid ground beneath my feet. The musty air of the dungeon is gone, replaced with the rich, heady scent of damp earth and burning firewood. My heart pounds wildly in my chest.

I was outside. It's been awhile since I have been inside that cell room. I almost leaped in excitement. Am I being set free? No, I don't think so.

Another thing, I can feel my body. My limbs. My breath. Almost as though I'm alive. No. That's not it. She had made mention of me taking a trip to the past.

Meaning, I’m in the past. A gasp leaves my lips. What's Alasia playing at?

"Strange, isn’t it?" I whip my head back to look at her. “ Well, welcome to the past, chosen one. Since you are dying soon. I thought to let you in on the truth.”

Her voice is a whisper in my ear, breathy, teasing. I whirl around, my pulse hammering, searching for her. Finally I see her, but not the ghost one. It was a living vibrant Alasia with a beautiful smile.

And the dead Alasia floats beside me, her form flickering in the dim candlelight.

She grins. "I wonder how it feels to be inside your own flesh again. Although, it's just an imaginary one."

My stomach clenches. The sensation is dizzying, like being trapped in a dream I can't wake from. And then,a door creaks open. As though the scene changed.

I stiffen, breath catching in my throat as the heavy wooden door swings inward, revealing a dimly lit chamber. My chamber.

And in the doorway stood him. King Raphael. My sweet mate. My heartbeat quickens from just seeing him. I miss him so much. I had to clench my hands, to stop myself. It's all an illusion, Ava. I suck in a deep breath calming my nerves.

As I continued staring at him, I saw him smiling at someone. It was Alasia. Her past self lifts her gaze, and I see the longing in her eyes. She was looking at him as if she could give him the entire world.

He's younger here, his sharp features softer, his gray eyes filled with something unspoken. Longing for her perhaps. He stood tall, his silver hair falling down, his back.

There was something about his presence, a force that demands attention, demands worship.

“ I can see the longing in your eyes, little wolf. I was once like you,” she chuckled, smiling at her younger self that she was going in and out of.

“He is mine,” I growled out. I don't know what made me say that. But, I didn't like the Raphael I was seeing looking at her. It made me mad and possessive.

“ Not for long, you know. After all, I will be taking your body soon,” she replied, her voice tinged with amusement and a warning. “ He was once mine, you know.”

She saw my opened mouth and then laughed heartily. “ You didn't actually think you were his first love?” A mockery. A taunt and she was right.

Alasia, floats back into the living Alasia, and then she steps forward, her fingers twitching at her sides. She wants to hold him. But something was holding her back.

She tries again but stops herself. Instead, she bows her head.

"Your Majesty," she whispers.

I watch, I feel the sizzling tension, the way her body trembles, the way her heart aches for something just out of reach.

"You called for me?" she asks, her voice was edged with adoration.

Raphael watches her, silent. The weight of his stare almost suffocating. I guess he had always had this habit of gazing into the souls of people.

Then, finally, he speaks. "I did." A slight gasp escaped my lips. I can't believe I have missed even his voice.

The Alasia’s spirit floats back to where I am. She hums, moving around lazily in the air.

"Ah, this part. This is where it all began."

I ignore her, my focus on the scene unfolding before me.

Raphael takes a step closer, then another. He is too close now, close enough that I,no,she can feel the warmth from him.

"You’ve been avoiding me, Alasia."

It’s not a question. It’s a statement.

Alasia flinches, I flinch as well, knowing I was going to see something I won't like. Raphael had been in love with this woman. It is in his eyes. He was deeply in love with her.

"I would never," she lies. Darting her eyes everywhere but on him.

He doesn’t believe her. I can see it in his eyes.

I want to scream at her, at myself for getting worked up. For letting this get to me. It was, after all, what Allasia wanted. To see how much Raphael loved her. To taunt me, indirectly telling she won even a thousand years later.

Funny, how I was suffering all these years and well, my mate, no second chance mate, had the woman of his dreams.

I try turning my head away. But I couldn't. I was trapped, reliving every breath and every heartbeat these two lovers seems to be sharing, looking at each other.

As I watched Raphael, unable to hold in his desires anymore, reached out.

His fingers brush against Alasia’s chin, lifting her face to meet his gaze.

The dead Alasia sighs beside me. "He looked at me like that once, like I was his whole world." Her voice turns sharp, bitter. "And look where it got me. You stole that gaze from me. You, you got it, all."

Such hateful accusations. Caused what? I didn't even know about Raphael, what am I saying, I wasn't even born then.

I try to shut her out, but it’s impossible.Because I already know how this story ends. And I can do nothing to stop it.

“ We have not gotten to the best part. You can't shut your eyes.” My eyes immediately snapped open when she gave that command.

“ Did you receive my gift?” Raphael asked skittish Alasia.

“ Yes, your majesty.” She whined. She flushed adorably red when she heard how loud her voice came out.
