Chapter 69: Human, you are bold.
~Ava's POV~
My hands were chained, so I couldn't bring the trembling children around me, I couldn't draw them closer to assure them I would protect them. Their whimpers and soft gasps continued to echo in our small space.
"Great Alasia, I am sorry. But getting a child these days is not easy, talk more of the boy you requested. He is the only son of the Minister of Wealth."
Ahh… thank the goddess.
A child has been saved from this hellhole. However, the only reason he's being spared is that he's the son of a minister. What about the innocent children who don’t have powerful fathers to protect them?
I heaved another heavy sigh. If I think about it, that's all I have been doing of late now, sighing, wallowing a bit in self-pity, and then trying to tell the children with my eyes that everything would be alright.
Even they didn’t believe me. Hell! Even I won't believe myself. So, all they do is cry. Thank the goddess they were spirits; otherwise, they would have fallen sick from all the wailing.
"Shut those children up!" Alasia screeched.
Both master and disciple are mad beings.
"Yes, your eminence. I'll get that done right away."
The minute Lara said that, the children's wailing increased.
Goddess. Lara is going to hurt them if they don't keep quiet soon. I need to do something. I don’t know what she's capable of, especially after receiving an order from that vile witch.
My gaze shifted to Alasia. Her dark hair floated in the air, her pale skin shining brightly, probably from all the children's blood she drinks almost every day to keep her youth.
Vile woman.
My eyes hardened, filled with malice as I thought about the innocent kids they had brought to this hall. Some were used in rituals to perform dark spells or create monsters. Others were sacrificed to maintain Alasia’s phantom beauty.
My hatred for these two monsters knew no bounds. They shouldn’t exist. Most times, I wonder what the upper powers were thinking when they created people like these two.
Lara released her latest experiment, a bat that now always hangs around her neck. A bat that was once a child.
Did I mention that children's souls are turned into different animals to be used as mythical beasts? That’s exactly what happened to the bat she just released from her bag.
No wonder I didn't hear it shriek along with her when she kept falling on her ass.
When children are turned into mythical beasts, they become shadows of themselves. They act only on the commands of the one who created them.
"Charles, drag the children out!" Lara commanded as the bat took flight from her hands.
I refuse to acknowledge the bat as a sane being anymore.
The Charles I knew when I first arrived here was a little hero. He would stand up for the kids being bullied by Lara whenever she was bored. And then, he would torment him for speaking up.
He even did that for me once, when the reverse should have been the case. I should have been the one standing up for him and beating the shit out of Lara.
What a shame.
A loud shriek tore from the bat’s mouth as it rushed toward the iron bars. And just like its mistress, it forgot, it was spellbound.
The spell caught it by the neck, holding it in an unshakable grip. And because the bat and its mistress were contracted, whatever pain it felt, Lara felt as well.
I couldn’t help but laugh at the sheer stupidity of it all. How can a master be so useless?
And she dared to call Gwen stupid? Hmph! She’s the stupid one. No, the foolish one.
"What are you doing?"
A cold voice came from behind Lara.
Alasia, as usual, hated anything that disrupted her plans. Now, her precious disciple was acting more like a fool than a student.
Her face changed into one of monstrosity. She turned toward the children, looking like a gargoyle.
Her eyes were gone, replaced by blank, empty holes, with blood dripping from the sockets. Her mouth stretched into a grotesque grin, revealing huge fangs, teeth that could rip apart flesh with ease.
The children screamed and screamed as she entered our small space.
The spells did nothing to her, probably because she was a phantom like us or because she was too powerful for Lara's spells to affect her.
Unable to bear the children’s screams any longer, I yanked on my chains, making them rattle loudly.
The noise made her turn toward me. Great. Just what I wanted. Now what? What do I do now that I’ve made a witch angry? Not just any witch, but a big, bad one.
I sighed again.
Her monstrous face twisted further, contorting into something even more grotesque.
She looked pissed.
Nice one, Ava. You’ve done well.
"You have something to say, human?" she seethed.
Her voice was a stark contrast to the melodious tone she had used earlier.
I just stared at her, unable to reply. Not that I could speak to save myself anyway. So, I might as well just keep staring.
"Are you keeping me quiet, human?! You dare!"
She was furious? Yes, no. Yes. She was angry. And to say she was angry would be an understatement.
She was breathing heavily, like the beast she looked like, on the verge of going on a killing rampage.
Thankfully, there was no one here she could kill. Except maybe Lara. But then again, she needed her, so she wouldn't, right?
She turned her attention to Lara, who was still on the floor, gripping her throat and coughing loudly, spit spilling from her mouth.
Her bat was still caught in the bars, whatever life that had been given to it draining away.
I wondered… Does the bat still have Charles’ consciousness?
Is he doing this on purpose, staying between the bars, knowing it would cause Lara pain?
"You have been nothing but a problem. Come here!" Alasia yelled.
She stretched out her left hand, and as though Lara was being carried by mysterious hands. she was pulled toward Alasia’s floating form like a magnet.
Alasia wrapped her hand around Lara’s throat, squeezing. Lara struggled, her legs kicking uselessly in the air.
I smirked. She deserves this. No. If Charles is still in there, Lara can’t die. If Lara dies, Charles’ soul will too.
I didn’t think so, I just reacted.
I lunged forward, the chains rattling loudly.
The children screamed even more, but I couldn’t look at them. I had to save Lara.
I moved as far as my chains would allow, and it was enough. I slammed into Alasia with everything I had.
Her monstrous face melted back into her real one, her beautiful features surfacing.
Her eyes went round, widened in shock. What is she so suprised about?
"Human, you are bold," she murmured.
She dropped Lara like an abandoned toy and turned toward me, smiling.
