Discharged

CULLEN

As I fought with Sarah’s brother, there were screams, but I wasn’t hearing them. The only thing I was concerned about was hurting him.

This was her brother. I expected him to want to protect her. But to find him trying to hurt her, with his knife... and the way she screamed...
I have never felt such agony.
I have never been so scared.
I have never been angry.

I have never tried to protect someone with the same instinct I had in that moment...When I heard her screams

Suddenly, people were in the room pulling us apart.
I didn’t resist the pain I was feeling, even though I knew I must have looked bad. And Ronan, the sick bastard was actually laughing. That made me angrier. I wanted to get back at him.

But all of a sudden my father and Ronan’s father walked into the room.

Dad said,
“Stop it. This is done. Cullen!.”

We all stopped. The room went quiet.

“Leave us.”

That’s when I realised just how many people had been inside—doctors, nurses, people watching, supplies spilt out everywhere, security officers, our guards too.

Everybody started filing out. I started leaving too, but my father called out,
“Cullen, wait.”

So I stood there. Waiting. After everybody had trickled out, Dad asked,
“What the fuck happened?”

Ronan was the first one to speak.
“He happened. I was just here hanging out with my sister when he walked in and started attacking me.”

I narrowed my eyes at him.
“You were trying to attack her. I saw your knife. She was screaming,” I said.

My father turned and looked at Ronan Sullivan, Sr.
And Sullivan... nodded.

I didn’t know what that nod meant. Then my father said,
“Cullen, come with me.”

“You can’t leave her here with him. He’s dangerous,” I protested.

“Her father is here,” my father said, calmly. “He’s going to take care of her.”

“She is my wife,” I argued.

He gave me a look. Not saying anything, just that look, like really?

I fist-punched my hands and walked out. I didn’t bother to spare Ronan another glance, I was afraid I’d attack him again.

Once I got out of the room, I walked farther, needing space.

That’s when my father turned toward me and said,
“I need you to help me with something.”

“What?” I asked, still fuming.

“I need you to go home.”

“I’m not leaving Sarah,” I said immediately.

“I knew you would say that,” he nodded. “But this is very important. You know I was in a meeting and I need you to do this. Go home and see my consigliere. It won’t take long. Just go.”

“Alright, fine,” I said, begrudgingly.

I decided to listen. Maybe I did need the break.
Maybe this time away from the hospital would help me cool down, even just a little. Because I hadn’t really left the hospital since.....

My mom, Cyrus, sometimes even Bella—they all came by. They brought things for me, kept me company when they could. But the doctor had been strict about letting people see her.

They said seeing too many people might confuse her. She hadn’t even recognised me yet. It was a miracle I was even allowed in there—especially with Sullivan acting like a complete asshole. My fucking father-in-law

And once Sarah gained her memory, it only got more complicated. And still, I had to admit... When she had lost her memory, I had spent some of the best time I’d ever had with her.

Even with her father there in the room always watching like a hawk, there was something between us. Something real. Something fragile, but so honest.

It was the first time I had really seen her. And I couldn't help but wonder why I never tried to know her like that before. What had held me back?

Anyway... I listened to my father and went home. I went straight to the Consigliere's home. He said he just wanted to check in. How I was doing mentally, physically, and how Sarah was doing.

I told him she was okay. That I was managing and not to worry. He nodded, and then he dismissed me. Just like that.

So, I went home. Took a long shower. Let myself lie down and rest for a little while. I didn’t even mean to fall asleep, but I did. And when I woke up, I went straight back to the hospital.

But something was off when I got there. There were no guards outside her room. Not one.

I didn’t think much of it at first—maybe they’d been moved or reassigned. But the second I opened the door and looked inside... That’s when I realised—

Something was really wrong. Because the room was empty.

Sarah wasn’t there. Her things weren’t there either.
It was like the entire room had been… cleaned out. I felt sick, a twisting feeling in my gut. I had to swallow down the bile rising in my throat.

I know I’m a made man. A man from the mafia. I’ve seen things. I’ve done worse.

But this? This was the one thing I’d been afraid of. The one thing I’d prayed wouldn’t happen.

I turned and walked out. Almost in a daze. I made my way to the nurse’s station and asked,

“Where’s the patient? The one in room 4B.”

“She’s been discharged,” the nurse said, almost too casually.

“Discharged?” I repeated. My voice was too loud. I didn’t care.
“How? Why? Nobody told me. Discharged? Who signed her papers?”

The nurse blinked, then clicked something on her computer.

“Her father signed her discharge papers.”

“But… was she okay to leave?” I asked, trying to stay calm. “I thought she still needed a few more weeks of observation.”

“Yes, but, ” she shrugged, “...her father arranged help at home. So it won’t be an issue.”

“Help at home…” I echoed. “Her father.”

She nodded, like it meant nothing, She wasn’t going to be any help.

I pulled out my phone and called my father.
He picked up on the second ring.

“Cullen,” he said.

“I’m at the hospital,” I snapped. “They’re telling me Sarah’s been discharged. I just left home. Did we get mixed up? Did I miss her on the road?”

There was a pause. A long one. Too long. And I felt it. I felt it before he even said it.

“Where is she, Dad?” I asked, sharply. Tense.

“She went home,” he finally said.

“What do you mean home?”

“She went back to…” He trailed off. Then added, “She went back home.”

I froze.

“What are you saying?” I asked, but it came out like a growl.

“Maybe you should come to the office,” he said. “At the new casino.”

Then he hung up.
