What's her special power?
-Adam POV-
I’m still angry at her. How could she? It was devastating, being sent away by my own mate. I don’t understand. Yes, I made a mistake. But no, it wasn’t a big of a deal, right? I sigh. I guess I won’t be able to understand. I felt she’s trying to mindlink me for the past couple of days, but I have blocked her. I wasn’t ready for her to answer. I hope she now feels how I felt the other day: rejected.
I’m heading towards the kitchen and I can feel she’s trying again. But I can easily block her. The moment I open the kitchen door, I feel a second attempt of hers. Damn, that one is harder to block. It’s almost like she’s breaking down the block. How is that possible? Is it because she’s my mate? I try to shake it off.
“Steve! My man! How are you doin’?” I try to act normal. Steve smiles: “Oh man, you’re trying to steal some food as well, hmm? I’m not surprised the Moon Goddess matched the two of you..” He shakes his head. “What do you mean?” I ask him.
“Well, around an hour ago Eve stopped by to grab herself some of my freshbaked food. I thought you were here to do the same?”
He’s right. I’m always hungry - but Eve loves food too. She’s a close second if it comes to who’s begging Steve for food the most. “Yeah, you’re right. Do you have something for me, Steve? I really want some snacks to fill this hungry stomach.” I say while I’m petting my stomach.
Steve laughs out loud: “Yes, off course I have! I’m working in the kitchen of a wolf packhouse. There’s always food in here! Look, I was making lunch. I have made sandwiches with pulled pork and a sweet honey-mustard dressing. I bet you’ll like this!” Steve is handing over a big and delicious looking bundle of bread. It smells heavenly. “That looks and sounds amazing Steve!” I take a bite and I’m literally in heaven right now! “Oh gosh, that’s really awesome! I’m addicted right now!” The pulled pork is still a bit warm and melts in my mouth. “Thanks Steve! I owe you, big time!”
I turn around and walk back to my room when I hear him laughing: “... Sure! I’ll remind you of that when I need to put the trash outside!” I chuckle and close the door behind me.
The way back to my bedroom, I feel a headache coming. I caress the sides of my head while I open my bedroom door. What’s happening?
*Don’t freaking block me, you idiot!*
What the hell? The bite of the sandwich I just took almost fell out of my mouth. How how…? How is that even possible?
*Eve?*
*Yeah, of course it’s me. Do you have another mate who dares to bother you?*
*Bbbut, but? How? I blocked you.. Actually, I blocked everything, just in case...*
*You blocked me?*
*What the hell, Eve? I just told you I did. What game are you playing?*
*I’m not! I just wanted to talk with you.. I-I, did I just mindlink through your block?*
*Yeah, you freaking did! And now I’m having a stupid headache too. I get it. You want to talk. Alright, you win. Come to my room.*
I sigh and take a deep breath.
-Knock knock-
I hear someone knocking at my door. “Yeah? Come in..” I answer. I see Eve opening the door. “What the hell? I told you to come 3 seconds ago... “ I say, surprised..
“I was waiting outside your room…” she says.
The moment I recovered from the surprise, I feel how my body starts to react to her presence. “Uuuhh, OK. Well, right. What do you want to talk about?” I try to cover the feelings for her.
Eve rolls her eyes. “Oh come on, you stupid. You absolutely know where I want to talk about.”
I sigh, I guess I can’t avoid this talk. “You know I never want to hurt you on purpose, Eve. But I don’t understand all of the fuss. I made a bad call, but it felt like you overreacted a bit, don’t you?” I waited for 10 seconds, but she isn't responding. So I turn around to face her. I see her tiny body, with an almost defeated attitude. She’s holding her hands in front of her face.
“Are you crying?” I walk over to her to hug her. “I’m so sorry babe..” I take her into my arms and I feel the sparks running all over my body.
“I know, Adam. I know I maybe overreacted that time. But you love your mom, too. In fact: I think it’s going to be hard to be your woman, the next Luna, compared to her. But that’s not it Adam. I needed to talk to my mom, too.”
“Why? What was so important, you couldn’t talk with me about?”
“My past. Mom’s past. You are a chosen one. The Moon Goddess gave you a special power: you’re a druid. Luna Avery can do creepy mind -controlling-things. And I? I had to find out what my powers are. Don’t you understand that? I feel useless around you all!” Eve starts raising her voice. “Even Crissie has special powers! She’s a freaking mage, just a human! Why can’t I do something shiny? I'm an Alpha, a Chosen One! Shouldn't I be able to do something special?”
She sniffs and brushes off her tears. “But I know it must have hurt you, that’s why I say sorry. But I know it was the best decision for me, at that point. Do you understand?”
I nod, although she can’t see me doing so, because we are still hugging. I let go of her and look her into the eyes. “I do, Eve. I really do. I’ve had that fight not long ago, remember?” I walk with her to my bed and we both sit on it.
“I saw everyone around me taking shifts. But I couldn’t. I didn’t understand why. I even thought I had no wolf. I felt different, always. But now I know why. I’m just complicated…” I smile. “So yeah, I do understand you need to figure things out, on your own. But just don’t think you’re ‘useless’ or ‘not special enough’. You’re mine. That’s all I need.”
Eve lets her head rest against my shoulder. “I know, cowboy. But that’s not good enough for me. I want to know who I am, and what I can do.”
“That’s understandable. But tell me, did you and your mom find something helpful?”
“Well, actually. It has probably something to do with mindlinking. My headaches, my seizures. Apparently I had them before, when I was little. I ran away and the moment they found me, I was able to mindlink. I never had them anymore. But now, they came back.”
I suddenly jump off the bed and say: “That’s it! Mindlinking!” It all came together. I look at Eve and she’s raising an eyebrow. Gosh, she still looks amazing.
“Yes! Mindlinking! Remember? Your first run? You were able to mindlink me, from far. Really far. And you heard me clearly, while I had troubles with that. There were noises on my side of the link. The mindlink-troubles in your past and the thing you did fifteen minutes ago? You broke my barrier? My block? In fact: I’ve never heard that’s even possible!”
“Sooo? What are you saying? I’m good in mindlinking and my headaches are connected with that?” Eve says, confused.
“NO! Yes... no! I mean, kinda. I think your Chosen power’s have something to do with mindlinking…”
