Chapter 85
As Baki moved in our direction, Doctor Bry returned his eyes to me. She appeared to have just left university because she was still dressed in her uniform.
"She'll look after Jas. When I take you to your house, I'll go home and sleep for a few hours before returning here so Baki may go home. Just come back here tomorrow night," Doctor Bry said before he stood up. I didn't say anything and simply responded with a nod.
I looked at Baki who was standing in front of me while smiling. I don"t know why her expression was like that but I didn"t smile back at her. I just averted my eyes from her and stood up. I couldn't understand why she was pretending that nothing had happened between us earlier even though it was obvious that her eyes were puffy because she cried earlier.
Her brother had no idea what we were talking about and what had happened to us on the rooftop, and I couldn't fathom what Doctor Bry would have said if he had heard and seen us earlier. I"m not sure if he knows how Baki really feels for Jas but I cannot think of it as my problem anymore.
"Let"s go," Doctor Bry said before he turned his back at me and started to exit the room. I also followed him and when I got to the door, I looked again in Jas' direction and assumed that he woke up but nothing had changed in him.
Before I finally closed the door, I looked at Baki and I didn't expect her to look at me either. She still smiled and even waved at me, but I did nothing to give her a response. I don"t like the way she acts now and I feel strange. I don't know what her reason is, but I have no intention of finding out. All I want to do now is get home and sleep so I can recharge my energies for the next day.
I followed Doctor Bry until we reached the hospital parking area. He opened the door for me before he got into the driver's seat and then he started the engine of his car. He turned to me as he held the steering wheel so I was asked what he wanted to say.
"Wear your seatbelt," he reminded and I immediately obeyed what he said.
He started to drive while my eyes were focused on the window. I could see the dancing trees we passed and his not-so-fast driving accompanied by melancholy music from his playlist. I was slightly surprised when he opened the window next to me but I looked at him and smiled at him before I faced the window again where the fresh and cold air was hitting my face.
The silence and coolness of the air were making my eyelids heavier, but I forced myself to just open my eyes. I can"t deny that I already feel tired and I"m sure my body wouldn"t be able to cope if I didn"t follow what Doctor Bry said.
Soon, we reached the front of my apartment. He even planned to go out to open the door for me, but I stopped him and took the initiative. He still hadn't closed the window next to where I was sitting earlier so he could still hear my gratitude.
"Thank you so much for taking me home. Take care." He nodded in response and I waved at him as he started driving again.
I couldn't wait for him to get out of my sight and I entered the gate. When I got to my apartment, I went to the kitchen and I got yogurt in the fridge. That"s all I ate before I headed to the room and took a quick shower before going to sleep.
The next day, I woke up to my phone alarm. My eyes are still very heavy and I am still very tired, but I can do nothing but get up. Even if I'm in this state, I'll go to campus because I can't let go of my studies. Each day on campus is crucial, I can't afford to miss even one. I don't want to aggravate my situation, so I'll continue to avoid causing problems with my academics.
I prepared a sandwich and that"s what I made for breakfast. I no longer bothered to make coffee and I just drank water. I am not hungry and I also know that I have eaten enough. I left the apartment and went to the waiting shed area to wait for the bus that soon arrived.
I just want the whole day to pass quickly so I can get to the hospital. I can't wait to see him and I wish there was a change in his condition. Baki most likely went home at this point because Doctor Bry was also on duty. He could only be glanced at now and then, and hopefully, nothing bad happened to him while no one was looking. That's what I'm frightened of, which is why I didn't go home last night without Baki to keep an eye on him.
I'm restless. I want to see him for at least a minute. I wanted to know how he was doing, and when the bus conductor approached me, I immediately talked to him.
"I'll go down to West Medical Center," I stated and he was a little surprised when he heard what I said. "I'm going to visit someone," I continued, with a smile on my lips. I didn"t know him, but I could see in his eyes that he was being questioned so I said that word.
"Don't take too long to visit that someone because you may not be able to enter the campus," he said as he handed me the bus ticket. "My son is also studying at Cannard University so I know what time their gate closes," he added, smiling. "I'm going back to work, be careful."
No words came out of my mouth but I nodded at him before he left in front of me. There are still 40 minutes before the lesson starts and I will only have to wait 10 minutes before I get to the hospital. I won't be there long, I just want to see him and I'll go to campus right away. I just wanted to make sure that his condition did not get worse and I also knew that I would not be at peace if I did not see him now.
I soon arrived at the hospital. His room was on the 5th floor and I would have to wait a long time if I used the elevator so I just ran up the stairs. With a sigh, I reached his door, which I immediately opened.
"Oh, El, why are you here?" Doctor Bry immediately asked. "You have a class today so why are you here?"
I went over to the bed and then I examined Jas. What he was like when I left him last night, is still the same today. I looked at Doctor Bry and then I gave him a response. "I won't be here long either. I just want to see him." I bowed slightly before I continued what I was saying. "I'm leaving," I added.
He could not speak and nodded slowly. I started to walk towards the door, but it was as if someone was pulling me to go back and look at Jas again because I hadn"t done enough before. I stopped walking and faced him again. I walked back to the side of the bed and then I looked at Doctor Bry wondering what I was doing.
"Can you turn your back on me for a while, please?" I asked. He was perplexed, but he manage to nod at me as a response. I didn't waste time bringing my face closer to Jas' as he did exactly as I said. Our gentle lips touched when I closed my eyes. I'm not sure where I got the bravery, but I'm glad I did.
