Chapter 197 Doing A Paternity Test
I began to feel a gnawing sense of uncertainty. But I knew very little about Bella, so I opted to remain silent.
Bella moved closer to Jerry, squatting beside him like a frightened little rabbit, cooing, "Jerry, what's wrong? Why are you speaking so coldly?"
Jerry glanced at Bella. "Bella Harris? Do you know when I started suspecting you?"
"What are you talking about?" Bella's eyes were filled with confusion.
Jerry's smile was faint but revealing. "Bella never calls me Jerry. You made a mistake the first time we met."
No wonder Jerry was always so sure.
But because of that DNA report, he had to think about it over and over again.
Bella's eyes flickered, her hands nervously twisting, tears teetering on the brink. "Then how did I call you before?"
Jerry scrutinized her. "You remember a lot about our childhood, don't you? How come you forgot just this one thing?"Skylar, protective of the daughter they had finally found, helped her up. "Jerry, we went through so much to find Bella. Why are you fixating on this now?"
Jerry smiled, his eyes narrowing. "Isn't she the one who insists on marrying me? I need to know exactly who my future wife is, don't I?"
He exchanged a look with Claire and called the butler, Kyle Rogers, in after getting her approval.
"Kyle, please contact the doctor to do an allergen test. Let's see if it's really a yam allergy or if she ate something else to fake these hives," Jerry instructed calmly.
Skylar said coldly, "Jerry Hammer, what do you mean by this? Can't I recognize my own daughter?"
Jerry spoke unhurriedly, "If she refuses the test, then the engagement is off. You have the freedom to choose your daughter, and I have the freedom to choose my fiancée."
Skylar was furious, gritting her teeth. "Does your father agree with what you're doing?"
Jerry mocked coldly, "Stop using my father to pressure me. Anyone who didn't know better would think it was my father's engagement."
Skylar's resistance was clear to Claire.
Claire slammed her cup on the table and spoke, her voice resolute, "Let's redo the paternity test!"
Bella's tears fell like pearls, her body trembling as she cried, "Claire. Are you abandoning me too?"
Claire also cried, unable to bear looking at her. She instructed Kyle to take a hair sample from Bella.
It was hard to accept that the granddaughter they had finally found might be fake. But if she was real, redoing the test would hurt the relationship between Claire and Bella.
Throughout the process, several pairs of eyes were watching, and Kyle was Claire's most trusted person. There couldn't be any mistakes.
Kyle put the hair into a transparent bag and handed it to Claire, but Claire waved her hand, saying, "Give it to Jerry."
Claire didn't trust the Harris family's hospital.
At that moment, Bella fainted from crying.
Fortunately, the reason she could be discharged today was that the Harris family had arranged a professional medical team to take care of her at home. They immediately started emergency treatment, and she "woke up" quickly.
Before the drama concluded, Jerry’s patience wore thin. After a terse farewell to Claire, he unceremoniously grabbed the back of my collar. "Let's go."
"Why are you always so ungentlemanly!" I snapped, my neck straining. I glared at him as he dragged me out of the yard.
Jerry glanced at me, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hungry?"
I said irritably, "What do you think?"
It was already close to eight o'clock.
Just when I thought Jerry might finally exhibit some chivalry, he lifted his chin nonchalantly. "Let's go. You still owe me a few meals. Treat me to dinner."
Admittedly, I had made that promise. Once in the car, I asked, "What do you want to eat?"
He answered, "Sandwiches."
I thought Jerry was joking. But when he drove to a convenience store, Jerry seriously asked me to go in and buy two sandwiches.
Seeing the type I bought, Jerry’s eyes darkened. "Hope Royston, if birthday, blood type, allergens, taste preferences, and my intuition are all coincidences, then I'll admit defeat."
"Bella Harris also likes beef sandwiches?" I asked, uncertainty creeping into my voice.
I typically stuck to the familiar, even though new types of sandwiches frequently emerged. More often than not, I just grabbed the familiar one.
Jerry raised an eyebrow slightly. "Yes."
I lowered my eyes, feeling a growing sense of uncertainty. One or two coincidences could be ignored. But this many? Could they all be mere coincidences?
But Cecil had also helped me trace my background, and he wouldn't lie to me. The documents couldn't lie either.
Jerry dropped me off at the hotel room door. I clenched my hands and asked a question that had haunted me since last night. "Jerry Hammer, why did you save me last night?"
Before today, although Jerry thought I was Bella, he hadn’t been absolutely certain. So, I had never thought for a second that Jerry would choose me over her.
Jerry frowned slightly. "Do you think I would abandon you to save her?"
I remained silent, which confirmed his suspicion.
Jerry suddenly reached out and pinched my face. "Compared to a report that anyone can tamper with, I trust my own feelings more. Besides, both the families were looking for a blood source for her. It arrived just minutes after you left."
I looked at Jerry steadily. "Thank you."
If Jerry had hesitated for a moment yesterday, I might be in a life-or-death situation now.
Jerry smiled. "Hope Royston, you're not as cute as you were when you were little."
His tone was a curious mix of mockery and tenderness.
"What?" I was stunned, and then I saw Jerry suddenly reach out and pull my hair.
I yelped, knowing Jerry's intention, and said deliberately, "Didn't you say a DNA report is not as good as your intuition?"
"The Harris family needs it." Jerry let go of my face, a smile playing on his lips. "If it's quick, we can get the results in two days. Then, I'll come to take you home."
