Chapter 233: Don't Go

Nolan reacted the fastest, swiftly sliding off the couch and running to open the door. "Jerry...! Oh, uh, thank you!"

It turned out to be the takeout I had ordered.

I approached, retrieved the food, and closed the door, gently patting Nolan on the head. "Did you miss Jerry?"

Nolan shook his head. "No. I don't miss Jerry, I just want to be with you. Can I sleep with you tonight?"

I sighed, feeling slightly helpless. "I don't think Jerry would agree..."

Taking Nolan's hand, we moved to the dining room where I looked at Cecil. "Cecil, I got some food from a local restaurant in Maple Valley. You should try it."

"Sure." Cecil smiled, never one to be fussy about food.

As Cecil joined us at the table, Nolan climbed onto the chair next to him, patting Cecil's side with a sweet smile. "Cecil, can you sit across from us? I want to sit next to Hope."

Cecil looked at Nolan with a warm smile, giving his cheek a playful pinch. "Alright."

The meal was relatively relaxed. Nolan behaved impeccably, eating by himself with minimal assistance. Now and then, I’d help him reach something he couldn't.

Midway through, Nolan's eyes lit up with a sudden thought. "Hope, what about Jerry's dinner? Jerry is so pitiful; he can't cook for himself."

I chuckled, "He can order takeout too. And remember, when we have a guest, we should take care of them first, right?"

Nolan beamed, waving his tiny spoon. "That's right. Jerry is family! We don't need to worry about him!"

Cecil's expression tightened marginally. "Are you and Jerry together?"

"No," I said, smiling and shaking my head. "He just lives in the same building."

Cecil nodded slowly, considering my words. "So, you two are very close now. It seems he might have the biggest chance."

"Cecil..." I began, wanting to clarify, but was interrupted by the doorbell ringing again.

Nolan wriggled, eager to answer the door, but I held him back. "You continue eating; I'll get it."

I figured it must be Jerry coming to pick up Nolan after his meeting.

When I opened the door, I was met with a pair of slightly unhappy, scrutinizing brown eyes. Jerry leaned casually in his wheelchair, looking up at me. "Push me."

I sighed lightly. "You can control it yourself."

Jerry's wheelchair was electric, but he yawned nonchalantly. "My hand's twisted; it hurts a bit."

I nodded, resigning with a soft exhale. "Alright."

I walked behind Jerry and pushed him into the dining room. “Nolan’s still eating. Do you want to join us?”

Jerry replied with a hint of accusation in his voice. “Okay. I’m already starving. I thought you'd call me for dinner.”

I sighed, "You said you had a meeting."

Jerry’s lips curled into a slight smirk. “So, you did think about calling me?”

"I did," I answered truthfully.

Jerry's eyes lit up with a smile.

Nolan, sitting at the dining table, swung his short legs. "Jerry, you're finally here!"

"Yeah," Jerry responded lightly, and Nolan quickly jumped off his chair and dragged another chair over, making room for Jerry.

The kid said crisply, "Jerry, sit here and eat with Hope!"

Cecil raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

The atmosphere grew tense as Jerry sat down and began eating slowly. “This is from that restaurant I took you to, right?”

“Yes,” I replied. “Despite being takeout, the taste hasn't been affected.”

Jerry nodded. "It's pretty good, suitable for hosting guests."

Cecil's lips pressed into a thin line. "Mr. Hammer, will the Hammer family agree to you marrying Hope?"

"The Hammer family?" Jerry chuckled mockingly, the room growing colder with his words. “Do you think I’m like you, needing to follow my family’s orders?”

Cecil's expression remained calm. "If you didn't have to follow your family's orders, your legs wouldn't be like this, right?"

I quickly intervened. “Cecil! His legs will recover eventually.”

Cecil sighed, "Hope, if it wasn't serious, why would he still be in a wheelchair after two years?"

"Right." Jerry’s lips curled in nonchalance, unbothered to refute. “But, Cecil, your legs are fine, and she still didn’t choose you? Friends should know their boundaries and not interfere too much.”

Cecil's grip on his fork tightened, his fingertips turning white. "Jerry, do you know the biggest difference between you and me?"

Jerry didn't respond; he just lifted his chin slightly, signaling him to continue.

Cecil put down his fork, adjusted his shirt cuffs, and stood up, looking down at Jerry. He spoke coldly but firmly, "When Hope needs someone the most, I'm always the one by her side. Just for that, you can't interfere in my relationship with her."

After saying that, Cecil looked at me warmly. "You guys eat. I need to head back to Jacquar. I'll be off."

I was about to see Cecil in the elevator, but a large hand gripped my wrist, sending a clear message.

I looked at Jerry and explained softly, "I'll just see Cecil off, I'll be right back."

"Don't go."
