Chapter 274: A Handy Task
"Jennifer Grayson."
Christopher dragged out her name, mulling it over.
Jennifer avoided his blue eyes, fearing she'd give herself away. Christopher chuckled, his voice sharp. "Who sent you?"
He suspected someone with an agenda had sent her.
Jennifer hadn't expected Christopher to be so sharp. She took a deep breath and recited her lines. "No one sent me. I'm just working part-time here."
Christopher crossed his legs, took a drag from his cigarette, and spoke deeply. "Ms. Grayson, you know I can find out anything. Whatever your backer offers, I can match. If you're not honest, I won't be lenient."
Jennifer's face went pale. She bit her lip, weighing her options, and finally decided to betray Micah. She met Christopher's eyes. "It's Micah."
She knew hiding the truth was pointless. Christopher could uncover everything. She decided to come clean, betting on Christopher over Micah.
Christopher frowned. "Micah?"
Daniel, angry, spoke up. "Mr. Valence, he's my cousin's boyfriend. You met him at the last party. He wants our medical project. I didn't expect this from him!"
Everyone knew Christopher's one non-negotiable was Hope. Jennifer was chosen because she resembled Hope naturally.
Christopher flicked his cigarette ash and asked Jennifer, "Where's Micah?"
Jennifer guessed, "Probably in the parking lot."
Christopher gave Daniel a look. Daniel left and soon returned, dragging Micah by the collar and kicking him to the ground.
Jennifer stepped back in fright as Micah glared at her.
Christopher, calm and dignified, said, "Micah, right?"
"Yes!" Micah scrambled up, limping over to Christopher, smiling obsequiously. "Mr. Valence, we've met before."
Christopher pointed at Jennifer. "You brought her?"
Micah regretted his actions. The project was slipping away, and in desperation, he had underestimated Christopher.
Micah tried to explain. "Mr. Valence, I saw your feelings for Ms. Royston. I've been through unrequited love and thought this plan might help. It doesn't solve the problem, but it can ease some loneliness."
Everyone understood the implication.
Micah added, "If Ms. Royston still has feelings for you, seeing another woman with you might make her realize her true emotions and come back to you!"
At least Micah thought this was a good enough excuse.
Christopher nodded slightly. "Well put."
Just as Micah sighed in relief, Christopher's face darkened, and he stubbed out his cigarette. "I'll cripple one of your legs, and we'll call it even."
Micah clutched his leg, begging, "Mr. Valence, I was wrong! Please forgive me."
His leg from the Maple Valley incident hadn't fully healed, and now he was about to lose another!
Knowing Christopher wouldn't budge, he turned to Daniel. "Daniel! Help me, please."
Daniel sneered, "You deserve it."
He ordered his men to drag Micah away.
Jennifer's face was pale, realizing the stark social hierarchy. Micah could manipulate her easily, but in front of Christopher, he was groveling like a dog.
After the commotion, Christopher lost interest. He stood up, then glanced back at Jennifer. His expression softened slightly.
He told Daniel, "Take care of her."
"Got it." Daniel, understanding Christopher's implication, would ensure Jennifer was safe from Micah.
Knowing Jennifer needed money for her mom's surgery, they transferred her mom to Messlushi Hospital and covered the expenses.
The next day, as soon as Christopher entered his office, Donald knocked and came in with an invitation.
Christopher asked, "What's that?"
"An invite to Madison's party next Wednesday," Donald said, handing it over. "The messenger's waiting for a response. Are you going?"
"Yes." Christopher agreed without even opening it, just hearing Madison's name.
Donald sighed, knowing why Christopher wanted to go. "Mr. Valence, maybe you should reconsider?"
Christopher sneered, "What do you think?"
"Okay. I understand." Donald quickly left.
Maple Valley, Serenity Manor.
Juniper got a message and looked at Madison, who was busy in the kitchen. "The RF Group replied. Mr. Valence will come."
"Good." Madison kneaded cranberries into the dough. "What did Patricia say? Did Sarah notice anything unusual?"
"No." Juniper shook her head. "She doesn't know yet. Our people entered her room when she wasn't there."
The day Sarah left for the show, Madison had entered her bedroom. It was spotless, not a single hair anywhere, which made Madison suspicious. They later found a bug under the desk in the study.
To avoid alerting anyone, they hadn't touched the bug. When they sent someone to collect hair from the show, they had cut the power in advance to avoid camera alerts.
Sarah's identity became even more suspicious.
Madison nodded, a cold glint in her eyes. "That's good."
"By the way, why did you invite Christopher to the celebration party?" Juniper asked. "We don't have any projects with him, right?"
Typically, celebration parties were for internal staff and close partners.
Madison pressed the dough into shapes and placed them on a baking tray. "No, but he is Hope's ex-husband."
"You mean..."
Juniper realized that by the time of the party, the paternity test results would be out.
As Hope's biological mother, Madison cleaning up her scumbag ex-husband was just a convenient task!
