Chapter 242: Drive Him Crazy
It was a lavish six-star hotel suite, the air filled with the scent of luxury amenities. Sarah had just stepped out of the shower when her phone rang.
On the other end, Cecil stood by a large window, his eyes half-closed but glinting with menace. "Did you think you could ignore my words?"
When Cecil had first chosen Sarah, it was for her seeming loneliness and naivety—traits that made her easy to control. But if Sarah defied him, he wouldn't hesitate to crush her like a pawn in his game.
Sarah clutched her phone, her heart racing. She hadn't expected Cecil to catch on so swiftly. Fortunately, she had prepared for this possibility.
Feigning confusion, Sarah replied calmly, "Did I do something wrong again to upset you?"
Cecil's voice was icy. "You drugged Hope at the party."
Of all the behavior Cecil might tolerate, this had utterly violated his boundaries.
Sarah managed to sound genuinely surprised. "What? Someone drugged Ms. Royston? That’s unbelievable. Are you sure there’s no mistake? No one would dare to do such a thing at an event like this."
Sarah pretended to add with concern, "Wait, what kind of drug? Is Ms. Royston okay?"
Cecil squinted his eyes. "It wasn't you?"
Sarah's tone was filled with sincerity. "Of course not. You warned me just tonight. Even if I had such a thought, I wouldn't have the guts. Besides, where would I even get the drugs?"
The drug she had used on Hope was something Sarah had acquired through intricate means, beyond Cecil's tracing capability.
Cecil, however, seemed to have come prepared. "I've already reviewed the ballroom's surveillance. You were the one who had the waiter deliver that glass of juice."
Sarah responded confidently, "Then you must have seen I never touched that glass of juice!"
She had exploited a blind spot in the surveillance. As soon as she turned around, she had poured the drug into the juice. The camera angle made it look like she was simply picking up another glass.
While Cecil pondered her explanation, Sarah seized the moment, her voice innocent. "I thought you liked her and she might become your future wife, so I wanted to take care of her."
Cecil's tone remained cold. "Mind your own business. Don’t try your tricks here!"
"It won’t happen again!" Sarah promised submissively, though inside she wanted to laugh.
She knew at the core, Cecil’s anger stemmed from the fact that when Hope had been drugged, he wasn’t the one by her side. His outrage was nothing more than wounded possessiveness. If he had been the one to take Hope away that night, he would be showering her with gratitude the next day.
Although she hated Hope, she had to admit Hope was terribly unfortunate to be the object of such a despicable and selfish man's affection.
For now, Cecil set the issue aside and got to his main point. "I heard you’re joining the show that Patricia Torres regularly appears on?"
Sarah blinked, her lie slipping out effortlessly. "Yes, it was Patricia who invited me. She’s probably trying to get that woman indebted to her."
Just then, the door swung open. Juniper stood in the doorway, her expression tense after overhearing the last part of Sarah's sentence.
Madison had always shown Sarah nothing but kindness and warmth. However, Sarah never truly reciprocated with genuine affection.
For a moment, Sarah was stunned, but she quickly masked her displeasure with a sweet smile as she glanced at Juniper. "Juniper, is everything alright? Does Mom need me?"
"No," Juniper replied, suppressing her emotions as she placed a glass of warm milk on the bedside table. "Your mom heated some milk for you."
Sarah nodded. "Okay, thank you."
Once Juniper closed the door, Sarah's eyes turned cold, though her voice remained soft and innocent. "Oh no, Juniper just heard me. What should I do?"
Cecil's sneer was almost audible. "You can't handle that? How do you expect to keep playing the role of Madison's 'daughter'?"
Sarah's response was quick. "I'll take care of it!"
Outwardly, Sarah feigned agitation, but inside, she was calm and calculating. She had long understood Madison's psychology.
A competent professional and socially adept woman, Madison harbored deep guilt towards the "daughter" she hadn't been able to raise. Sarah exploited this guilt with precision, ensuring Madison's affections and protections were easily manipulated.
Cecil, taking a drag from his expertly lit cigarette, exhaled and spoke coldly. "When you're on the show, remember what to say and do. I don’t have time to clean up any messes you make."
"Got it!" Sarah nodded eagerly.
She didn't need Cecil's reminder; she never forgot. This was her best backup plan if her true nature was ever exposed.
Despite Madison's powerful presence in the entertainment industry, no one had absolute control. Sarah believed that as long as she maintained her popularity, there would always be a way out. She would never again endure the hardships of scarcity and deprivation.
After ending the call, Sarah's lips curled into a smile.
She wondered if Hope and Christopher had ended up together that night. If they had, it would drive Cecil crazy, a prospect that delighted her.
