Chapter 328 Larry Woke Up

That night, snatching Claire was a total gamble.

Sawyer's game plan was to poison Larry, grab the Harris family dough, and bounce with Skylar and Kimberly all in one night.

With Austin stalling, they could slip out easy.

But then Sawyer found out Claire was sick, which was a win for him. So, he chilled a bit, but that gave Jerry his shot.

Sawyer toughened up and said coldly, "I don't have a wife and daughter."

In this neck of the woods, the boat would hit the border soon. Jerry was only a big shot in Maple Valley; he couldn't touch Sawyer once he split.

Sawyer waved his hand and ordered, "Set sail."

The ship took off.

"Jerry..." Jerry's crew behind him were freaking out!

If they let him go, finding Sawyer again after he left Maple Valley would be a nightmare.

But Jerry just stood there, ice-cold, not making a move.

It was too late; Sawyer was already on the boat. Trying to nab him now would be a mess, and not worth it.

Since Sawyer wanted to play games, Jerry was down to play too.

Jerry's eyes darkened as he glanced at Skylar. "Larry listens to you so well he even snatched his own mom. Stick with him, and you'll be fine, but you wanna roll with this outlaw who just ditched you and your kid."

Skylar shot daggers at Jerry and yelled, "What do you know? He'll come back for me and our daughter!"

Jerry nodded. "Alright, let's see if you can wait him out."

"What are you gonna do?" Skylar was scared of Jerry but couldn't beg. She knew Sawyer wouldn't really leave her hanging. "If you mess with me, karma's gonna bite you in the end!" she shouted.

Jerry never bought into that karma stuff, and besides, taking care of someone like Skylar was like cleaning up the trash. How could he face karma?

But thinking of Hope and the kid, he did take her words to heart.

"Don't worry, you ain't dying anytime soon," said Jerry.

He raised his hand, and his guys took Skylar and Kimberly to the car.

Skylar was shocked. She thought Jerry would toss them into the sea for shark chow.

But then she realized Jerry had a long game in mind.

Sawyer had swiped the Harris family fortune, including what was Hope's. So Jerry was definitely gonna get it back for Hope.

But little did Jerry know, Sawyer had backup overseas.

Claire's condition couldn't handle late nights. I stayed with her in the ICU for a bit, then helped her to the ward to crash.

After she dozed off, I whispered to Elissa, "I'll have Steven take you home. I'll stay with Claire tonight."

"No, I'll stick around. I'll leave when Jerry shows up." As soon as Elissa finished, Steven walked in.

"Hope, Jerry texted you, but you didn't answer. I'm here to tell you Jerry and I gotta jet out of the country. He's already at the airport, and I'm heading there now."

Steven added, "If you need anything and can't reach Jerry, hit me up. The folks around you have a special way to contact me."

I checked my phone, and sure enough, there was a message from Jerry. "Alright, you go ahead," I said.

After Steven left, I told Elissa and then went out to call Jerry, reminding him to stay safe.

When I got back to the ward, Elissa was already sprawled on the sofa.

I sighed, "The sofa's a pain. You should go home."

"It's cool, I'm too lazy to move." Elissa pulled me onto the companion bed. "Don't stay up late, get some sleep."

Seeing her insist, I had to give in. "Why don't we just share this bed? There's plenty of room for both of us."

Elissa shook her head. "No way, you're pregnant. I don't wanna squish my goddaughter."

I laughed, "We don't even know the gender yet."

Elissa grinned, "That's my wish. But if it's a boy, I'll love him just as much."

"Alright, go to sleep, good night." She tucked me in.

Staying up just to keep Claire company, I was already beat. I knocked out almost immediately, had a dreamless night, and slept like a log.

The next morning, I woke up starving, catching a whiff of something tasty.

Elissa said, "Smells good, huh?"

I focused my eyes and saw Elissa holding breakfast in front of me.

I smiled. "You're such a kid."

Elissa beamed. "Yep, I am."

She pulled out a small table and set up breakfast.

"Where's Claire?" I got up to check on Claire and wash up, but the bed was empty.

"Claire got up early. Saw you sleeping like a baby, so she didn't wake you. She went to see Larry after breakfast."

I nodded and headed to the bathroom.

Elissa followed and said, "I wonder if Larry will be a good son this time when he wakes up."

I almost choked on my toothpaste and quickly spat it out, asking, "Larry woke up?"

"No." Elissa quickly waved her hand. "I was just guessing. Even though I don't like Larry, Claire's aged a lot. Losing her son now would be heartbreaking."

She sighed, "Even though Larry did so many wrong things, he's still Claire's son."

Elissa and I were on the same page. We never wanted anything bad to happen to Larry. Losing a child at her age, I didn't want Claire to go through that pain.

As Jerry arrived at the hotel, Steven reported the progress of their work. Seeing Jerry rubbing his eyes, he knew Jerry was exhausted and hadn't slept much.

"Jerry, you should rest first," Steven advised.

Jerry responded with a grunt.

Steven went to the next room. He had also been working non-stop. Last night on the plane was the first time in days he had slept for eight hours.

When he woke up, Jerry was already having breakfast.

"Jerry." He smiled sheepishly. "Why didn't you wake me?"

Jerry's voice was lazy. "I can't let you die of exhaustion. Finding another assistant would be a pain."

Steven felt warm inside. Jerry was showing concern.

He teased, "I feel like you've gotten a lot softer since Hope got pregnant."

Jerry smirked but didn't say anything.

Larry woke up a week later. Once it was confirmed he was out of danger, he was moved to a VIP ward.

But when Claire and I went to see him, we noticed something was off.

Larry actually smiled at me and patted the bed for me to sit. That wasn't the most shocking part. The most shocking part was when he held Claire's hand and whined, "Mom, I'm hungry. I want to eat."

I was stunned and hadn't had time to react when my phone rang, so I went to the balcony to answer it.

When I returned, Grant was examining Larry.

Elissa had come over after finishing her work at the company. Seeing my grim expression, she asked, "What's wrong? Did Larry tick you off again?"

I shook my head and pulled Elissa to the bedside, not knowing how to explain.

Elissa whispered in my ear, "Why is he grinning at you like a goofball?"

I clenched my fists. "He..."

"Ms. Royston, can we talk?" Grant interrupted me, and I immediately agreed, walking with him to the door.

Claire wanted to listen too, but Larry held her tightly, not letting her go.

Grant explained, "The poison seems to have damaged his brainstem. It's already a miracle he survived; considering the circumstances, impaired intelligence is a relatively positive outcome."

I took a few seconds to process. "You mean his brain is damaged, and he'll be like this from now on?"
