Chapter 304 She Is Already My Wife
Jerry's voice had this rare serious tone, and when I locked eyes with his deep, loving gaze, I legit couldn't breathe.
My heart did this weird skip thing, and I almost nodded, finding it hard to say no. But hey, I'm not in my twenties anymore. After a sec, I snapped back to reality.
I pressed my lips together lightly. "I wanna wait until all this stuff is sorted out."
Seeing the disappointment flash in his eyes, I couldn't help but explain, "These situations are like ticking time bombs. Whether it's Carlos, Kimberly, Skylar, Desmond, or the mastermind behind it all, having a kid now would just play into their hands. Jerry, I do want us to have a kid soon. I trust we'll be awesome parents."
I added, "But not now."
"Hope," Jerry's lips curled into a slight smile. "Don't you think you sound like a bad woman? And I'm like the guy you're stringing along."
I was stunned and couldn't think of a comeback.
In those TV dramas about cheating, bad guys always promised women, "Don't worry, we'll have a kid, but not now."
I instinctively wanted to argue, but he started the car and said slowly, "I promise you."
I stared at him, making sure he wasn't upset. "Really?"
"Really." Jerry chuckled, steering with one hand and ruffling my hair with the other, teasing, "But if you get pregnant this time, can we..."
"Yes."
He raised an eyebrow. "I haven't finished my sentence."
"I get what you're saying." Holding his elegant hand, I whispered, "Even though the odds are slim, I promise, if I were to get pregnant, I'd protect her with everything I have."
Honestly, I wanted a kid just as much as he did. But compared to him, I was more of a pessimist, so I wanted to wait until everything was foolproof before considering having a child.
When we got to the hospital, Claire was awake, being helped by a nurse to exercise in the living room.
I pushed the door open. "Claire, how you feeling? Is it better after the treatment?"
While Declan's treatment could delay the poison's progression, it couldn't stop it completely. Before this therapy, Claire had started feeling numbness in her limbs again.
"Hope, why are you here again?" Claire gave me a reproachful look. "Didn't I tell you to go straight home after work? Why are you always worrying about me? I'm fine now. If it weren't for you insisting on me staying in the hospital, I could've been discharged and gone home."
We didn't tell Claire about the poisoning, so if I hadn't coaxed her, she would've been discharged a few days ago.
I went over and held Claire's hand. "I just wanna spend more time with you."
"Then let me leave the hospital and go home with you?" Claire said, afraid I wouldn't agree, and looked at Jerry. "Jerry, what do you think?"
"Grandma!" I was helpless. "You still..."
"Hope, why don't we just take Claire home?" Jerry, who usually spoils Claire, suddenly got all reasonable on me. "You won't be at ease with Claire alone in the hospital. Plus, it's close to Tranquil Haven Estates. If anything happens, we can rush her back to the hospital or call the medical team over."
"Claire, hang tight for a sec." I pulled Jerry out of the room, shut the door, and frowned. "Do you really think Claire's ready to be discharged?"
He looked down at me and asked softly, "Are you mad?"
"Of course not." I explained, "I'm just not sure if you're giving in to Claire to make her happy or if it's really okay."
"Both." Jerry nodded slightly. "Mr. Quill came a few days ago for Claire's last treatment. Keeping her in the hospital won't change much. Mr. Griffin's follow-up treatment can be done at home too."
Hearing that, I knew he genuinely thought it was doable, and I couldn't help but waver. Claire seemed so much older, and after this poisoning scare, I wanted to be by her side even more.
After a moment of hesitation, I agreed, "Alright, but you get to be the good guy and tell Claire."
"Okay." He agreed easily and went back into the room.
Soon enough, he came out, standing next to a very happy Claire.
I couldn't help but laugh and teased, "Do you think Jerry is your real grandson now?"
"That's not possible." Claire shook her head. "He can only be my grandson-in-law."
On the way home, Claire looked at Jerry through the rearview mirror and patted my hand, sighing. "You don't need to worry too much about my health. I'm old, and I have no regrets. My only wish is to see you and Jerry get married and have kids soon."
If it were any other day, I would've called her out for trying to rush me into marriage. But now, not knowing if the antidote could be developed in time, her words made my eyes well up. I turned my face away to wipe the tears. "Claire, I just got back to you, and you're already willing to let me get married?"
"Hope, why are you crying?" Claire was startled and quickly said lovingly, "Of course, I don't want you to get married, then you won't always be around me; but I believe that marrying Jerry will make you happier than you are now. The Harris family is dangerous; it's better to stay away from it!"
"Claire, don't worry." Jerry suddenly spoke, his voice as soothing as ever. "Whether we get married or not, Hope is already my wife in my heart. No matter what happens, I will protect her."
Claire looked at him with satisfaction and confirmed, "No matter who bullies her?"
"Yes, as long as I'm here, no one can bully her," Jerry promised firmly. But having experienced too much loss, my first reaction was anxiety.
I quickly said, "What do you mean as long as you're here? Can you still not be with me? You have to be by my side forever."
