Chapter 235: Bite Her
My eyes welled up slightly, and it felt like something was scratching at my heart.
For a split second, I thought about just telling him the truth. If it affected Jerry’s condition, I would face it with him. It was better than him speculating day and night, thinking I was heartless.
I shook my head. "No, Jerry, these past two years I've been..."
"Forget it." Jerry's smile was faint, tinged with mockery, but his eyes were red. "Hope, I shouldn't have had any expectations of you."
His words were like daggers.
Widening my eyes to hold back my tears, I pretended to be relieved. "If you want to put it that way, you're not wrong."
If in Jerry's eyes, I was a heartless person who could move on and be happy with someone else as soon as he disappeared, there was no point in explaining further.
Jerry let out a low, bitter laugh, his teeth clenched. The next second, he stretched out his arm, grabbed mine, and pulled me close.
Then, his hand gripped the back of my head, and he bit me on my lips.
Yes, not a kiss, but a bite.
The metallic taste of blood seeped into my mouth through my slightly parted lips. The pain was sharp, and I gasped. Considering Jerry’s legs weren’t recovered, I didn’t dare push him too hard, so I just pulled away a bit.
Jerry's eyes were dark as he warned, "Whether you're Hope or Bella, it doesn't matter. If you dare be with someone else, it's a big mistake!"
With that, he maneuvered his wheelchair and left.
I touched my lips, my fingertips stained with blood, and reminded him, "Nolan is still in the shower."
"I'm busy lately. You take care of him."
Jerry didn't look back.
When he entered his own house, it was illuminated only by the faint starlight outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Jerry sat alone in the darkness, mulling over Hope's attitude and feeling a wave of irritation wash over him.
He had spent so much effort searching for her for over two years. Yet, even after leaving Christopher, Hope hadn't come to find him first. She had stayed with Cecil instead. Was he really that unworthy of her?
Hope could be with Christopher, Cecil, or anyone else, but not him. Was that what she meant?
Jerry thought about the countless hours he had spent cooperating with doctors for Hope's sake and found it laughable and meaningless. But at least, he had survived.
And he would let Austin and Carlos pay the price. Whether it was driving Hope away behind his back or orchestrating the explosion, either was enough for them to pay dearly.
Jerry's hand on the wheelchair slowly clenched, the veins on his pale, slender hand bulging, but soon, it started to tremble uncontrollably.
Originally, Jerry had thought that with Hope moving back, his sleep would improve. Maybe he wouldn't need medication anymore, knowing that just a wall away was her bedroom.
But now, it seemed he was terribly wrong.
Jerry didn't turn on the light. Instead, he opened a drawer by the faint light from outside, took out a bottle of pills, poured a few into his hand, and threw them into his mouth.
The bitterness on his tongue mingled with the metallic taste of blood. It was an odd combination, but oddly enough, it made him feel a bit better.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Jerry glanced at the caller ID with annoyance. It was Sophia. At this hour, she should be boarding her flight, yet she still had time to call him.
He lazily answered, directly asking, "What's up?"
His voice still carried a hint of unresolved irritation.
"Hey, are you Okay?" Sophia, knowing Jerry well, immediately sensed someone had upset him. "Who pissed you off this time?"
Jerry licked his teeth, sensing the taste of blood again. "Who else can it be?"
Sophia understood immediately.
Jerry had been holding video conferences from home all day. No one at the company would dare upset him. Besides, Jerry had been irritable these past two years, but he always vented his anger on the spot. Whoever upset him wouldn’t have a good time.
The only one who could make Jerry silently fume was Hope.
However, after talking with Hope this afternoon, Sophia felt a bit sorry for her, too.
Hope should have been a cherished rose, but she became a weed struggling in the storm because of her parents, surviving on her own. Her marriage was also unfortunate, with a stubborn ex-husband. She had endured depression for over two years, fighting through it alone, when Jerry had at least Sophia, Avery, and friends by his side.
Jerry frowned. "Why aren't you saying anything? Don't you love to seize every chance to mock me?"
Sophia sighed, "Not in the mood today."
Even someone as carefree as Sophia felt a bit sympathetic. She cleared her throat. "I have some news about what you asked me to look into. I thought I’d let you know first."
"About Madison?"
