Chapter 307 We Have a Baby
The gauze was totally soaked.
'Man, that's a gnarly wound, and you're still being reckless!' The nurse, looking all stern, wanted to give him a piece of her mind, but seeing Cecil's gentle face, she just sighed and smiled. "Mr. Lewis, you gotta take better care of this. Keep it dry, or you'll be dealing with a nasty infection."
"Got it, thanks." Cecil grinned and then, like he just remembered something, casually asked, "Oh, by the way, I saw a bunch of bodyguards near the gynecology department on the second floor. What's up with that?"
He had just caught a glimpse of Hope and wanted to go over, but Jerry's guys blocked him.
"Nothing major." The nurse's face showed a hint of envy. "I heard Mr. Hammer brought his fiancée for a check-up. He's super protective, and the bodyguards are probably just to keep things smooth. That girl's really lucky."
Cecil's face darkened at that.
A check-up? Thinking about what he overheard between Hope and Elissa yesterday, he got lost in thought.
The nurse kept working on his wound and asked, "Something wrong?"
"Oh, no, just thinking Mr. Hammer's as doting as they say." Cecil gave a half-hearted reply, and once the wound was treated, he walked to the end of the corridor and made a call.
---
After the doctor finished talking, there was a long silence.
Jerry and I stared at the test report in our hands, then at each other.
After a few moments, my heart started racing, and I finally asked, "So, we're having a baby, right?"
Jerry had crumpled the edges of the thin report.
He could joke about it last night, but now that it was confirmed, the usually chatty guy was speechless.
I had never seen Jerry like this and found it pretty funny, so I reached out to poke his face.
Jerry looked at me, and without a smile, his chiseled face was a bit intimidating.
I asked, "Got nothing to say?"
Jerry shook his head, then nodded.
Trying to keep my excitement in check, I stood up and said, "I need to go home to see Claire. You wanna stay here for a bit?"
Jerry immediately stood up and followed.
Now he wouldn't let me go anywhere alone.
Steven drove us back.
It was clear that Jerry hadn't yet adjusted to the idea of being a dad.
Meanwhile, on another floor of the hospital, a loud noise echoed from the men's restroom.
Cecil had punched through the stall door.
The phone fell to the ground, its screen shattered, and the broken pieces reflected Cecil's bloodshot eyes.
The black Bentley rolled into the Tranquil Haven underground parking lot.
As soon as it stopped, I jumped out of the car, but Jerry held me back.
"What?"
He pointed to my belly, and as I looked down, he bent over and scooped me up.
He whispered, "Careful, you're pregnant now."
I still wasn't used to it, and I was more worried about Claire.
I wanted to share the good news with Claire.
But seeing Jerry so flustered made me laugh, "What, I can't even walk now?"
Jerry raised an eyebrow. "I haven't adjusted yet. I need to get used to it first, so for now, no."
I nodded. "Got it, hurry up and carry me upstairs..."
Before I could finish, my phone rang. Jerry took it out for me and suddenly smirked coldly.
I was puzzled, but when I saw the caller ID, I understood.
"Hey, Cecil." I answered while watching Jerry's expression, "Huh? Meet up? What time? Okay, got it. See you later."
I hung up and glanced at Jerry. He was watching me with his head slightly lowered, expressionless, like a big dog sulking at its owner.
His look amused me, and he responded with a cold chuckle.
I wrapped my arms around Jerry's neck and teased, "Hey, I'm not alone anymore. Our baby is on my side now. If I don't see you smile, I won't be happy, and neither will our baby."
Jerry still didn't respond.
I kept going, "Claire told me that unhappy babies come out all wrinkly and ugly. If it's a daughter, you..."
Jerry let out a short laugh, his lips curving into a smile.
He sneered, "I see you're getting spoiled now."
Hearing his lazy tone, I knew he wasn't mad.
I nuzzled his chin and told him about my chat with Cecil.
Jerry tried to keep his smile, "So, you want me to sent you to meet up with someone who covets you?"
"Please." I coaxed him, acting all coy. "Don't you need to protect me and the baby?"
Jerry snorted and then helped me back into the car.
"Oh, hold on," I quickly said. "I need to tell Claire first."
Claire would be over the moon to know I was pregnant.
Jerry picked me up again and strode upstairs.
I felt his swift movements were hinting that I shouldn't go see Cecil.
But what Cecil said on the phone was about Claire's health, so I had to go. Claire's health was the most important right now.
Besides, Cecil had always been good to me and would never do anything to hurt me.
Steven was waiting by the car, lighting a cigarette, his eyes darting around.
Steven thought Jerry might talk tough, but in reality, he was super protective of Hope.
"Getting more delicate now, can't even walk on your own?" As soon as Jerry and I walked in, we heard Claire's teasing.
I wiggled my legs, signaling Jerry to put me down.
But Jerry walked in and carefully placed me on the sofa.
Claire frowned and smiled. "I know you love her, but you can't spoil her like this."
"She's in a special time." Jerry poured me a glass of water and sat down beside me. His tone was as lazy as usual, but you could hear the sincerity.
Claire wanted to say more, but I interrupted in time, "Claire, you're going to be a great-grandmother!"
Claire was stunned and didn't react for a long time.
She looked at my belly and then at my face. "What did you say?"
I took Claire's hand and placed it on my abdomen. "There's your great-grandchild in here. Are you happy?"
Claire's hand started to tremble uncontrollably. Afraid of hurting the baby, she quickly pulled it back.
"Oh, my God!" Claire joyfully slapped her leg and started pacing.
I knew Claire always felt sorry for me, that I was born into the Harris family but had to endure so much hardship.
Finally, I was back by her side, but I had to take over the Harris family's mess and worry about her health.
Claire even worried she wouldn't live to see me get married and have children, which would be a great regret.
That was why I wanted to share this good news with Claire first.
"Good, good, good." After a long pause, Claire finally spoke, repeating "good" several times without saying anything else.
I gently pulled Claire to sit down. "For your health, please try to remain calm and not get too excited. Relax. Take a deep breath."
Claire patted my head. "You're a mom now, but you're still so playful."
I shrugged. "I got it from Jerry; I can't help it."
Jerry's big hand rubbed my head, and he chuckled, "Are you mocking me?"
"What do you think?" I looked up and gave him a look, making him laugh helplessly and said to me, "Watch your language, don't let the baby think I'm a bad dad."
I replied, "But you are bad."
"Oh?" Jerry raised an eyebrow and leaned in close to my ear, his voice deliberately rough and low, "How bad?"
I pushed him away and quickly turned to Claire, "See? Who's acting cheeky now?"
Claire rolled her eyes, waving her hand. "I just remembered, I haven't fed the fish."
I exposed her lie, "We don't have any fish."
Claire said calmly, "I'm going to water the plants."
With that, she quickly walked to the balcony, ignoring whatever I said.
My eyes welled up with tears.
Jerry turned my face and gently wiped away my tears with his thumb.
"Claire will be fine." His voice was deep and soothing. "Trust me, okay?"
Mentioning this, I suddenly stood up. "Right, I need to go find Cecil."
