Chapter 430 Who Upset You?
Elissa's lips twitched. Felix was just so straightforward.
Francis had once said that if Elissa needed someone who followed orders to the letter, Felix was her guy. No tricks, no games. Just pure obedience.
He only listened to Francis and her. She hadn't expected her orders to carry more weight than Rainey's.
"Felix, you're the Peterson family's bodyguard. How can you take orders from an outsider?" Rainey protested, still struggling.
Felix, clearly annoyed, tied her up. Then, just as she was about to speak, he shoved a piece of durian into her mouth. Rainey despised durian and immediately felt nauseous, unable to say another word.
Felix looked puzzled. "Durian's great. You just don't know how to appreciate it."
"Also, I only have one boss, Mr. Francis Peterson. When I first got here, it was made clear that I only take orders from him," he added.
"Then why..." Rainey's eyes filled with tears, her voice weak. "Why are you listening to her now?"
Felix replied, "She's Mr. Francis Peterson's future wife. Mr. Francis Peterson said that Ms. Wilson's orders are his orders, and I should follow them."
Rainey had always seen Felix as a simple and loyal person, someone who would sacrifice himself for Francis in times of danger. She hadn't expected this turn of events.
Elissa watched, stunned and anxious. No matter what, Rainey was still Francis's mother. She couldn't go too far...
"Well..." Just as she opened her mouth to speak, the smell of durian made her gag.
Hope was puzzled. "Don't you like durian?"
Coralie suddenly spoke up, "During pregnancy, you might dislike foods you usually enjoy. It's normal."
They were stunned.
Felix quickly finished the durian, afraid Elissa would make him throw it away. "Ms. Wilson, it's all gone."
Elissa was taken aback, looking at Coralie in disbelief. "Are you saying I'm...?"
"Go get checked to be sure."
Hope immediately contacted Jerry. Jerry was already at the door, answering the phone as he walked in.
"Miss me?" he joked.
Hope wasn't in the mood for jokes. She quickly explained the situation. Jerry's eyebrows twitched, and he immediately went to find a doctor.
The doctor came to draw blood for testing. Jerry had someone follow to keep an eye on things.
Hope nudged him. "You should go yourself."
Jerry didn't move.
Hope said, "Then I'll go myself."
"Fine." Jerry patted her head and gave Francis's bed a light kick. "You owe me one."
Then, as if remembering something, he said to Elissa, "He can't hear you now, so pass it on for me."
Jerry left the room. Elissa hadn't fully processed everything and didn't hear what Jerry said. She touched her lower abdomen, finding it hard to believe.
Elissa murmured, "If the test confirms it, it means I got pregnant right after coming here. The little one is pretty strong."
She had mentioned being pregnant in a moment of desperation. She hadn't expected it to be true.
The results weren't back yet, but Hope had a gut feeling it was true. A skilled doctor, faster than test results.
Coralie being here to treat Francis was proof of her expertise.
Hope also touched Elissa's belly. "This child has to be strong to keep up with my daughter."
The joy of the child's arrival somewhat eased the sadness. And Francis was about to wake up soon.
Hope and Elissa smiled, but Rainey was full of resentment, her eyes blazing. She couldn't find any joy.
Felix suddenly spoke up, "Ms. Wilson, once Mr. Francis Peterson wakes up, I won't be staying with him anymore."
Elissa was confused. "Why?"
Felix shrugged. "Because I can't eat durian anymore."
Elissa didn't know how to respond to that.
An hour later, Jerry returned with the pregnancy test results. Hope immediately went to him. "How is it?"
"I didn't look. It's not you who's pregnant," Jerry teased.
Hope rolled her eyes at him and took the test results. The final result indicated four weeks of pregnancy. Confirmed pregnant.
She handed it to Elissa. "Congratulations."
Elissa had already accepted the idea of being pregnant, but seeing the results still made her excited. Hope quickly helped her sit down. "In the early stages, you need to rest well. No emotional ups and downs. Francis will be fine. The baby on the way must be a blessing."
Elissa nodded firmly. "I'll listen to you. You have experience."
Coralie had finished her treatment and handed Elissa a small white bottle. "For stabilizing the pregnancy. Your health isn't great, and you were on blood-activating and anti-inflammatory medication before."
Elissa quickly took it. "Should I take it now?"
"You can. Take it for a week. If you feel unwell, contact me." Coralie gave her contact information and asked, "Do you still want the fried chicken?"
They had ordered some snacks earlier, including a box of fried chicken that hadn't been touched. Hope quickly packed them up and handed them to her.
"Thank you." Coralie sat by Elissa's bed and started eating the fried chicken.
Elissa and Hope both thought Coralie was quite a character.
Elissa asked, "Ms. Bishop, are we just waiting for Francis to wake up tomorrow?"
Coralie nodded.
Brielle came over. "Mommy, I'm hungry."
Elissa was taking her medication, so Hope asked, "What do you want to eat? I'll get it for you."
Brielle cupped her face in thought. "I want to eat everything."
Hope asked Coralie, "Is there anything she shouldn't eat?"
Coralie shook her head and handed Brielle the fried chicken. Hope hesitated. "They're spicy."
Coralie replied casually, "It's fine."
Hope gave them yogurt and fruit. Then she had someone get two bowls of hot noodles. This side was warm and harmonious, while Rainey was in a sorry state. Every time she tried to speak, Felix would know and promptly gag her. She was so angry she stomped her feet. But no one paid her any attention.
Jerry delivered the test results, glanced at Rainey, and then turned to make a phone call. Half an hour later, the noodles arrived. Coralie and her daughter ate their fill and told Elissa, "Please arrange a room next door."
Elissa was a bit slow to react but quickly had someone do it. Once the room next door was ready, Coralie took Brielle to sleep.
Coralie said, "You all should rest too. There's no need to keep watch. He'll be fine."
Elissa replied, "Okay."
She wanted to see them off, but Hope made her lie down and rest. She went to see them off and thanked them.
"No need to be so polite," Coralie said. "I'm a doctor."
In the short time they had spent together, Hope had developed a good impression of her.
Just as Hope escorted Coralie and Brielle to the next room, Jerry called back. Hope took the opportunity to ask about Coralie.
Jerry replied casually, his tone deliberately piquing her interest. "She's incredible. I could go on and on about her for hours and still not run out of things to say."
Hope smiled. "Then don't say anything yet. When Francis wakes up, let's have Elissa listen too. She loves stories."
"You sure know how to put it nicely, honey."
Hope touched her nose, feeling a bit embarrassed. Coralie was here to treat Francis, so it wasn't good to gossip about her.
"You should get some rest. You've been working hard lately."
Jerry looked at her with a deep gaze. "You're warm to me when you need me, and cold when you don't, huh?"
Hope gave him a playful glare. "Can't you just be a friend? Francis is still lying there. Watch what you say."
Jerry snorted lightly. "He's faking it..."
Hope quickly covered his mouth. "Alright, fine."
Jerry removed her hand and gave it a firm squeeze. "Just wait until we get back to Maple Valley."
Hope turned and went back into the room. She made a funny face at him through the small window. Jerry chuckled softly. His wife, he would spoil her.
With the treatment done, Elissa had Felix leave. Before he left, he untied Rainey. It was already early morning, and with Coralie saying Francis would wake up tomorrow, Rainey probably wouldn't sleep.
Elissa still apologized. "It was an emergency earlier. Please understand."
Rainey ignored her and sat by Francis's bed, pulling the curtain to separate them. Elissa and Hope exchanged glances and lay down to sleep.
Rainey kept watching Francis. She didn't sleep all night.
The next day, Brielle ran into Elissa's room and saw Rainey lying by the bed. She tiptoed over quietly. Seeing Elissa awake, she ran to her and smiled. Elissa reached out and patted her head.
Brielle looked at her belly. "Mommy said you have a baby in your tummy."
Elissa nodded and whispered, "Do you want to touch it?"
Brielle's eyes sparkled, pure and untainted by the world. "Yes."
Elissa lifted the blanket and sat up. "Go ahead."
Brielle gently placed her small hand on Elissa's belly. "It's still flat."
"Yes, it hasn't grown yet." Elissa said, "When the baby is born, will you come to see him?"
"Okay."
Elissa went to freshen up, and Felix brought breakfast in. "Ms. Wilson, I asked around. There aren't many foods suitable for pregnant women here. Once Mr. Peterson wakes up, you should go back home to rest. You don't even eat durian."
Elissa replied, "Alright, thank you."
Felix smiled. "It's no trouble."
Elissa finished freshening up and checked on Francis. Rainey was lying motionless beside him. Sensing something was wrong, she went to check and found Rainey's face pale.
She quickly told Brielle, "Go get your mommy."
"Got it!" Brielle ran off immediately.
Jerry happened to come in and saw Rainey's face, his expression changing. "What happened?"
Elissa shook her head. "I don't know."
Hope pulled the curtain aside. "Don't worry, sit down. I'll help."
Elissa's face turned grim. "Did we go too far yesterday?"
Hope reassured her. "Don't worry yet. Let's wait for Ms. Bishop to check."
Jerry pinched Rainey's philtrum to try and revive her. Coralie came in and said, "Stop, it's useless."
Jerry's hand shook. "What?"
Seeing their faces, Coralie quickly explained, "Pinching the philtrum won't help. It's not something that can be solved that way."
She stepped forward and gave Rainey a pill, then felt Rainey's wrist. "She was upset yesterday, but that's not the whole reason..."
Coralie's fingers moved slightly. "Send her back home and have Louis check her. If necessary, she might need surgery."
Everyone's faces changed. Jacob, who had come to deliver breakfast, dropped the food on the floor. He quickly walked over and took Rainey from Jerry.
"What surgery?" he asked.
Coralie withdrew her hand. "If you're her husband, you should know she has a heart condition. She's under a lot of emotional tension, and it's starting to take a toll on her physical health. Comfort her more and don't let her get angry so easily."
Rainey had been a fierce businesswoman, even negotiating deals while giving birth to Francis. After the negotiation, she barely made it to the hospital to give birth. She had a sudden hemorrhage and ended up in the emergency room. Because of that, she developed some health issues.
Over the years, with business stabilizing and her age advancing, she had semi-retired and was doing well. But the issues with Francis and Elissa kept her up at night. And she couldn't always vent her frustrations. Over time, it built up inside her.
Jacob nodded. "Got it."
Coralie didn't waste words. "Take Mrs. Rainey Peterson back home and have Louis check her. Don't worry, it's not a major illness. At most, she'll need a minor surgery." She handed Jacob a small bottle. "If Louis says conservative treatment is fine, take his medication and this one before bed. With good sleep, she'll gradually recover."
Jacob thanked her and immediately took Rainey back home.
Coralie stayed for breakfast. Hope patted Elissa's shoulder, seeing her worried face, and comforted her. "Ms. Bishop said it's not serious. Don't worry."
"You too." Coralie sipped her porridge. "Don't overthink. In special situations, no one will call you cold-hearted. Don't worry. And at her age, having some health issues is normal. People can get sick at any time."
"I've treated a 26-year-old with cancer who didn't want chemotherapy and just wanted to live comfortably for the last few months..." Coralie paused. "I'm telling you this to encourage you to face problems positively, not to make you feel worse. As doctors, we seem cold because we've seen so much. Too much empathy can hinder our treatment."
Hope nodded. "I understand."
Coralie pointed with her fork at Elissa. "Eat first. If you don't eat, the baby won't have anything to eat."
Hope helped Elissa over. Elissa had just sat down when she quickly got up and rushed to the bathroom.
Coralie explained, "She's in the early stages of pregnancy and was frightened, so her reaction is intense and may persist for some time. The medication can help manage it, but she also needs to actively participate in her care and maintain a positive mindset."
Hope understood Elissa. Rainey was, after all, Francis's mother. She wanted to be with Francis properly. Being caught in the middle was tough.
Jerry returned after seeing Jacob and Rainey off and saw Hope sitting alone outside the room. She didn't look happy.
"Who upset you?" Jerry lifted her chin, raising her lowered head. "It can't be me, right? Then I'll reflect."
Hope hugged him and sighed. "I always hoped Elissa would be happy. I didn't expect her love life to be so rocky."
Jerry held her, gently stroking her back. "It won't be like that anymore.."
