Chapter 102 Betting on Her and Charles to Make It to the End
He sat across from Anna, staring at her, and asked again, "Do you still care about my past?"
Anna never cared from the start.
After all, she was the one who approached Charles first; she had no right to judge his past.
She didn't get it; if he had nothing to do with those rumored women, why let the rumors spread?
Thinking this, Anna asked him directly.
Charles's eyes darkened a bit, and he slowly said, "Because, in them, I could find a little bit of you, Anya."
Anna frowned, never expecting that to be the reason.
Charles continued, "Actually, at the beginning, there were no such messy rumors. Many of them were in the entertainment industry, trying to use my status to boost themselves. Back then, you were with Michael. I thought I would never have a chance with you in this life. Finding some similarities with you in them was a bit of solace in my lonely times. They wanted my power and wealth, and I wanted that bit of similarity in them. Over time, rumors of my promiscuity spread in the upper circles."
Initially, Charles thought about clarifying.
But then he thought, no matter what, Anna would never come back to him, and no one cared about his reputation outside.
So he didn't bother with those rumors.
And those rumored women were quite self-aware. Except for Mandy, everyone else was after his money and power. After 'breaking up,' they knew their place and didn't try to scheme for advancement using baseless rumors.
After hearing all this, Anna couldn't tell what she felt inside.
She originally thought that the eight years Michael spent with her were already good enough.
She even once thought that in this world, perhaps she would never find anyone who could treat her better than Michael.
Until now, she suddenly realized that all these years, there was always someone silently watching over her.
Through her joys and sorrows, her ups and downs, there was always another person accompanying her.
Logically, she shouldn't have been blindly moved or believed Charles just because of his words.
But there was a strong intuition in her heart telling her that what he said was true.
After finishing lunch tastelessly, before Charles got up to clear the dishes, she suddenly grabbed his wrist.
Charles paused.
He stopped by the table, looking down at Anna on the chair.
"Charles." She spoke softly.
Looking up at him, her red lips parted, hesitatingly saying, "I might not be as good as you think. I might not be worthy of your deep love and favoritism."
Charles knew what she was afraid of.
He leaned down, getting closer to Anna.
Looking into her eyes, he softly said, "Anya, I've told you, liking you is my own business. You don't need to feel guilty because of my feelings. Anya, if you like me, then from now on, we will love and protect each other. But if you can never forget Michael, that's okay too. I like you, and for the rest of my life, I will watch over you."
The softest part of Anna's heart felt like it was hit hard by something.
She suddenly stood up, and before Charles could react, she tightly wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him.
She buried her head in his shoulder, and Charles, maintaining his bent posture, held her waist and pulled her into his arms.
"Charles," her voice was low, with a barely noticeable tremble. "Give me some time; I might not be able to respond to you immediately."
And then she said inwardly, 'But I will try to forget him; try to forget the past. And then quickly fall in love with you.'
Charles held her tightly, greedily inhaling her scent, and replied, "Okay, I'll wait for you."
Strangers only saw the countless halos around Anna and her glamorous exterior.
But no one ever saw the desolation and scars inside her.
That time at the coffee shop, when she approached Charles, she came to him full of pain and scars.
If it was just to maintain a superficial harmonious marriage, it would be fine, neither of them would invest their true feelings.
But if it was for love, then someone like her really didn't deserve him.
But Anna wanted to take a gamble. For the first time in over twenty years, she had such a strong impulse, wanting to risk everything to have a bet.
To bet that she and Charles could make it to the end.
To bet that she could completely forget Michael.
