Chapter 33: The Ring
Anna thought Charles would let her go after dinner, but she was wrong. As soon as he put down his fork, things got even crazier.
Just when Anna thought he might let her go after he finished his portion of lunch, he tightened his grip and made her straddle his lap.
"Charles!" Anna exclaimed. This was way too close for comfort. Only lovebirds in their honeymoon acted like this.
Charles' hand was like a vice on her waist, making sure she couldn't escape. He looked at her angry face and calmly took her hand, pressing it against his chest.
"Anya, your hands are so soft and delicate. How'd they get like this?" Charles teased, making Anna's heart race. She instinctively tried to push him away.
"Charles, let me go!" she demanded.
But Charles ignored her, playing with her fingers. Suddenly, he looked up and said, "Anya, don't you think something's missing on your hand?" His thumb rubbed her ring finger, making it clear what he meant.
"A wedding ring would be perfect," he said, holding her waist with one hand and touching her ring finger with the other. "How about we go pick one out?"
His tone was casual, but he was dead serious. Anna's fingers curled, and her long lashes fluttered before she half-closed her eyes.
"I have to perform surgeries regularly; a ring would be inconvenient," she said, clearly rejecting the idea. She didn't want his money, never called him husband, and didn't want a wedding ring. To her, their marriage was a sham.
Charles leaned in closer, holding her tighter. "Then just wear it after work and take it off during," he coaxed.
Anna saw the stubbornness in his eyes. "Charles, we don't need those things between us," she explained.
The warmth in Charles' eyes faded a bit, but his expression didn't change. He lazily said, "You're right; those mundane things don't suit you."
Then he glanced at the time and asked, "Do you start work at two?"
Anna nodded, confused.
"How about we do something else before you return to your work?" Charles suggested.
Anna frowned. Charles looked at her for a few seconds, then pulled out a few condoms. "I brought everything," he said.
Last night, after poking holes in them, Charles had taken the time to study the condoms again this morning. Seeing the holes were invisible, he poked them again with a needle.
He threw the condoms away and walked to the door of the lounge, locking it. As he walked back, Anna got nervous. "What are you doing now?" she asked.
Charles didn't answer. He picked her up and placed her on the bed. Just as Anna was about to sit up, he lay down beside her, his strong arms holding her tight. His eyes sparkled with amusement as he looked at her wary face. "We slept too late last night. Let's take a nap now that we have time," he said, chuckling.
Anna found it hard to believe in his self-control. Her brows furrowed, and her gaze was cautious.
Charles held back his laughter and closed his eyes, pressing her head against his chest. "Anya, your body tempts me, but I'm a man of my word. I keep my promises."
