Chapter 50 Possessiveness
Ethan was glued to his phone in the tent till midnight, sweating bullets.
Charles? Radio silence. Dude didn't even bother to read Ethan's messages.
Ethan finally chilled out a bit, feeling a smidge of relief. He tossed his phone aside, took a deep breath, and crashed under the covers.
But the next morning, first thing he saw on his phone? Charles booted him from their group chat! The prompt was like a punch to the gut: [You have been removed from the group chat].
Ethan felt like he'd been sucker-punched.
Around seven or eight in the morning, the rescue team rolled in with another batch of injured folks.
Anna and Charles had just stepped out of the tent when they spotted Austin, all decked out in black, carrying Tina, who was bleeding from her leg and arm. Behind him, Patrick and a few teammates were helping Julia and the director hobble over.
Tina was banged up pretty bad, but she seemed to be in good spirits.
Austin made a beeline for a cushion, ready to set Tina down. But Tina clung to his neck like a koala, refusing to let go.
Austin squatted, and even though half of Tina's body was already on the cushion, her arms were still latched onto him. Austin glanced at her arm and frowned, "Let go."
Tina pouted, "No, it hurts."
A vein throbbed on Austin's forehead. Did it not hurt when she was hanging on him?
Behind them, Patrick and the others had already settled Julia and the director on nearby cushions. They turned to look at the usually stoic Austin and the clingy Tina, their faces lighting up with gossip.
Austin, looking all cold and unbothered, pried her hands off and gently tossed her onto the cushion, avoiding her injured leg. He turned to leave, but Tina propped herself up and grabbed his hand just in time. "Mr. Stewart, for saving my life twice, I..."
"No need to repay!" Austin cut her off with his icy voice.
Next second, he shook off her hand and walked away to help other trapped folks.
Anna walked over with a medical kit to clean Tina's wounds. It was unclear what Tina had gone through, but from her knee to her ankle, there were cuts and scrapes, some so deep the flesh was turned out. Her arms were bruised up too, looking pretty gnarly.
Yet Tina's lips were curved in a slight smile, her eyes sparkling with a captivating charm.
Anna started disinfecting her wounds with a cotton swab, and as soon as the disinfectant touched her leg, Tina hissed in pain.
She squeezed her knee, trying to ease the pain. Then she looked at Anna pitifully and whined, "Dr. Howard, it hurts."
Anna couldn't help but smile. Looking at the gaping wound, she suggested, "How about I give you an anesthetic?"
Before Tina could answer, Charles walked over with a warning look in his eyes, glaring at the pitiful Tina on the cushion who was trying to charm Anna. "Get lost, Tina. Go seduce some other man, and stop bothering my wife!"
Charles looked down at Anna and sincerely suggested, "Anya, just disinfect it. The Green family heiress has thick skin; no need to waste the anesthetic."
Tina kept cursing him in her heart, hoping he would never win over his wife!
About half an hour later, Austin and Patrick rescued a few more trapped tourists.
Tina's eyes followed Austin and his team closely. Two of the teammates were wearing police uniforms.
Tina could roughly guess Austin's identity. When there was no one around, Tina asked Charles, "Are you and Dr. Howard going to get a divorce?"
Charles, holding a cigarette between his fingers, looked up at her and asked, "Why?"
Tina looked at Austin, who was moving among the injured tourists. She said, "I've taken a liking to a man. If you don't plan to divorce Dr. Howard, I'm going to start pursuing him."
Charles followed her gaze, "Austin?"
Tina nodded, "That's him."
Charles was silent for two seconds before reminding her, "You better think it through. The man you've set your sights on is not a straightforward character."
Tina scoffed, "Could he be more complicated than you? You always pretend to be harmless, deceiving our Dr. Howard."
Charles looked up, his voice cold, "What do you mean by harmless? What have I deceived Anya about?"
"And," Charles continued, "stay away from my Anya. She's mine, not yours."
Tina's lips twitched, "I don't swing both ways!"
Charles lazily replied, "Doesn't seem like it."
Suppressing her anger, she smirked and maliciously threatened, "Do you dare let your Anya see your possessiveness?"
Charles didn't flinch, his gaze unwavering. "You should spend more time chasing your man and less time meddling in my business," he retorted, a finality in his voice that indicated he was done with the conversation.
