Chapter 114 Miscarriage
On the first floor of the Starlight Pavilion villa, Michael looked at the increasing pool of blood under Anna and instinctively wanted to take her to the hospital.
But just as he was about to move, he hesitated.
His deep eyes were fixed on Anna.
His emotions flickered, complex and indistinguishable.
She was actually pregnant with Charles's child?
If this child were gone, would she be able to forget Charles?
Anna, how could she be pregnant with someone else's child!
Just as Michael was struggling internally, a strong commotion suddenly erupted outside.
Immediately, the door to the Starlight Pavilion hall was forcibly kicked open.
Charles was at the forefront. When he saw Anna lying in a pool of blood, his pupils contracted sharply.
He almost lost all his usual composure.
Stumbling, he ran to Anna's side, his outstretched hand trembling violently.
He wanted to pick her up quickly but was afraid of causing her more pain.
With so much blood, Anna was in so much pain.
Charles suppressed the pain in his heart, trying to be as gentle as possible as he lifted Anna from the ground.
He didn't dare to stop for a moment and rushed out as fast as he could.
Although he wanted to tear Michael to pieces, to end the man himself, Charles clung to the last shred of reason holding him back. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Anna to a hospital as fast as possible.
Austin and the Aegis Sentinel team members, who had subdued Michael's bodyguards in the Starlight Pavilion, were stunned when they saw Charles rushing out with a blood-soaked Anna.
Austin was the first to react, pushing his teammates aside to clear the way. "Charles, get in my car. You can't drive while holding Anya."
Patrick noticed Austin's unusual behavior. In all these years, he had never seen Austin show any emotion.
This was the first time.
He stopped Austin, who was about to get into the driver's seat. "Austin, let me drive. I'm the best driver."
Given Austin's current emotional state, it was indeed safest for Patrick to drive.
With this in mind, he quickly moved to the passenger seat while Charles sat in the back holding Anna.
The military SUV sped away from the Starlight Pavilion.
In the car, Charles's hands trembled uncontrollably.
Anna, who had been drugged, was burning hot, but now her body was getting colder and colder.
Her breathing was becoming weaker and weaker.
Charles could even feel the temperature rapidly leaving her body.
At the same time, more and more blood was flowing out, soaking Charles's clothes in less than a minute.
He placed his index finger near Anna's nose, detecting her faint breathing.
Then, with a tense voice, he said to Patrick, who was driving, "Go to Maple Street, Ethan's private hospital. It's the closest."
"Got it," Patrick responded, steering towards Maple Street.
Austin called the traffic department to clear a green corridor, ensuring they could reach the hospital as soon as possible.
Charles looked down at Anna, opened his phone, and called Ethan.
When the call connected, he quickly said, "Anya is injured. I'm taking her to your hospital now, Ethan. Prepare for surgery."
Hearing this, Ethan, in his private hospital office, tensed up.
He instinctively asked, "Is the baby okay?"
Charles's face was heavy as he looked at the blood on Anna, his voice trembling, "It's hard to say."
Hearing this, Ethan immediately left his office and ordered preparations to begin.
Ten minutes later, the SUV stopped at the hospital entrance.
In the hallway outside the operating room, Ethan's expression grew increasingly grave as he assessed Anna's condition.
Let alone the baby, at that point, it was uncertain whether Anna could make it through.
Before entering the operating room, Charles quickly said, "Ethan, do your best to save the baby, but you must save Anya's life, no matter what!"
Two days later, Anna woke up.
Her long eyelashes fluttered gently, and the next moment, her tightly closed eyes slowly opened.
Charles, who was sitting by the bed holding her injured left hand, breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her wake up and quickly said, "You're awake, Anya. Does it still hurt? How do you feel now?"
All of Anna's consciousness was stuck on the moment Michael tried to assault her at the Starlight Pavilion. Hearing Charles's words, she turned to look at him.
She forcibly pulled her thoughts back from that desperate memory.
She instinctively moved her right hand, wanting to touch her abdomen.
But before she could, Charles gently held her wrist. "Don't move, Anya. There's a needle in your right hand; you're still on an IV."
Anna moved her fingertips but didn't move her right hand again.
She looked at Charles and asked her first question, "Charles, did we lose the baby?"
Charles's eyes darkened.
He caressed the corner of her eye, looking at her dim expression, and tried to soften his tone. "We can have more children once your body recovers."
Anna's lips pressed together slightly.
She'd expected this outcome, yet the confirmation that the baby was gone still pierced her heart with a deep, intense pain.
At the Starlight Pavilion, she had a premonition that the baby might be affected.
The pain in her abdomen at that time was too intense.
Then she fell down the stairs. The baby was less than a month old; if it had survived, it would have been a miracle.
Charles, seeing her sorrowful expression, recalled what Ethan had told him the day before.
Ethan said that Anna had been given the strongest illicit drug on the market, a drug that not only made people lose all reason and become ravenous but also caused severe physical damage.
That Anna could maintain the last bit of clarity and resist Michael's assault under the influence of such a drug was beyond everyone's expectations.
And this baby, even if she hadn't fallen down the stairs, had little chance of survival.
Even if the baby had been forcibly saved, it would have been plagued with various congenital diseases for life.
Saving Anna's life this time was already very fortunate.
During the two days Anna was unconscious, Charles stayed by her side without leaving.
Watching Anna lie lifelessly on the hospital bed, he regretted it countless times.
He regretted signing the online contract with the foreign company that day, regretted not postponing the signing to pick up Anna himself, regretted not staying by her side every moment.
It was his negligence that caused Anna to experience such a loss and injury.
Thinking this, Charles tightened his grip on Anna's wrist and said hoarsely, "I'm sorry, Anya. I failed to protect you."
Anna shook her head.
No matter how the blame was shifted, it couldn't be placed on Charles.
Thinking of Michael, a thick hatred flashed in Anna's eyes.
And Thalia, she wouldn't let her go!
