Dinner with the Alpha and Luna
LILIAN'S POV
The sun was beginning to set its chambers for the mouth and allowed the moon to take over.
The entire pack looked like there was some sort of dragon that lived nearby and was constantly blowing fire into the air to make the atmosphere look the hue of orange.
I busied myself in my chambers as I prepared for dinner with Alpha Arthur and Luna Caroline.
I had spent the entire afternoon in the Luna's chambers, talking about pack matters and learning more about the pack's customers and traditions.
And then Luna Caroline had informed me that we were going to be having dinner later with the alpha. Both Kaiden and myself.
After having a hot lavender bath, I donned a simple but elegantly beautiful dress, one that wouldn't have to draw too much attention to myself but would still make me appear presentable in the presence of the Alpha and Luna.
After I was done with the preparations, I made my way to the dining room. I felt both anxious and uncertain as I went.
I also could feel apprehensive. Of course Kaiden was going to be there, and I wasn't entirely sure of how my evening was going to be like since he was going to be there.
History had made it clear that we weren't going to be close and I had every intention of keeping it that way, at least for my peace of mind.
I frankly would not want to have to face the cold and distant treatment he was giving me.
The dining room was lit with grand chandeliers, the long table at the center of the room was set with fine china and silverware.
The room was lit with soft, warm lights, giving it an inviting atmosphere, It was grand.
Alpha Arthur and Luna Caroline were already seated, as at the time that I entered.
Kaiden as usual was yet to arrive at the table. That gave me some sort of relief to say the least because that gave me an opportunity to settle comfortably before he would come and I would have to be faced with a tense atmosphere with him in it.
"Lilian, my darling, you look so lovely," Luna Caroline said to me with a genuine smile on her lips.
Her smile was infectious, and so I reciprocated the gesture with a curt bow.
"Thank you, Luna," I replied and took my seat next to her.
Alpha Arthur gave me a nod of acknowledgment, his expression, one of quiet approval.
"We're glad you could join us tonight,"
Alpha Arthur said to me. His voice was deep and authoritative as usual.
"Of course, Alpha Arthur," I responded as I tried my hardest to not look away from him even though his presence was too commanding to keep staring at him.
Soon and unable to wait any longer for Kaiden, we began the meal, quietly.
We ate in a comfortable silence, we could hear only the clanging of cutlery while we all ate.
It wasn't long before Kaiden arrived, he walked into the room with a casual air that belied his status.
He had on his face a stern look about him.
He greeted his parents with a nod, and then his eyes briefly met mine before he took his seat opposite me.
The room was tense with so much energy,
but I kept my focus on my meal, refusing to let his indifference affect me.
"Kaiden, so nice of you to join us," Luna Caroline said, her tone slightly more pointed than before.
She was clearly aware of the cackling electricity in the air and tried to smooth things over.
Kaiden glanced at me, with an unreadable expression on his face before he spoke.
"Yes, it's... good to see you finding your way into the pack," he said, his voice was flat.
He picked up his fork and began eating, clearly uninterested in engaging further.
I felt a sting of rejection but kept my face neutral as I went on eating.
Luna Caroline wasn't deterred, though and she went on with drawing me into the conversation, asking about my interests and what not.
I answered politely, I smiled gratefully for her efforts to include me.
Alpha Arthur, too, made an effort to engage me.
Despite the harmonious atmosphere, Kaiden remained cold and quiet.
He only focused on his meal, occasionally glancing up but mostly keeping to himself.
I tried my hardest to not let it bother me, but his coldness was hard to ignore.
I could sense his reluctance to be here, to be around me, and it hurt more than I cared to admit.
Even though most times I could feel that he was watching me even when he wasn't looking my way.
I just desperately wished that the night would be over and soon.
Luna Caroline went on with trying her hardest to include Kaiden in the conversation, asking him about his plans and responsibilities within the pack for the next few days.
His answers were curt, and he gave the bare minimum of information.
It was clear he wasn't interested in discussing anything personal or emotional at the moment.
With each passing moment, I felt sober and depressed.
I was beginning to feel like he was acting up like this because of me. I wasn't wrong though. I knew I wasn't.
At one point, Alpha Arthur leaned forwards on the table and maintained eye contact with Kaiden and spoke to him.
"Kaiden, I know you've been busy with pack duties," Alpha Authur began in his deep and authoritative voice. "but I hope you understand the importance of this union.
This isn't just about the pack; it's about family, about building a future together."
His tone was gentle but no doubt it was firm.
Kaiden met his father's regard with an unreadable expression on his face.
"I know this father and I understand," he said simply, before he returned to his meal.
The tension in the room thickened, and I chose to remain silent. I was just going to have to sit this through.
From beside me, Luna Caroline let out a soft sigh but quickly regained her composure as she smiled even though it didn't reach her eyes.
"Well, it's been a lovely evening, and I'm sure we all have enjoyed ourselves with the meal ," she said, she had a bright and cheerful tone about her.
Then she looked at me with a warm smile.
"Thanks for having dinner everyone and thanks to you Lilian for being amazing tonight." She said to me and I smiled gratefully at her.
"Thank you, Luna Caroline," I replied.
Despite the awkwardness of the evening, I appreciated her efforts to make me feel welcomed.
Dinner soon came to an end and everyone was rounding up emptying their plates.
As we stood to leave, Luna Caroline reached out and gave my hand a soft and gentle squeeze with a smile on her lips.
"We'll see you tomorrow, Lilian. Get some rest, dear." She said to me.
I nodded my head and smiled back at her.
"Thank you. " I told her. "Goodnight, Luna Caroline, Alpha Arthur," I said and then I bowed my head respectfully.
Kaiden left without another word, and I watched him go. I felt sad on his behalf.
I had hoped for something, anything, that might indicate he was warming up to me, but the evening had only confirmed that he had no intention of doing that.
Once inside my room, I closed my door and leaned against it as I slid down, letting out a long sigh.
The day had been exhausting, both physically and emotionally.
I walked over to the window and looked out at the night sky, the stars twinkled above in the sky.
I took a deep breath as I tried to center myself in the room. No matter how difficult things were with Kaiden, I had to try my best to stay strong.
I had to prove myself, not just to him but to the entire pack. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was determined to find my place, to carve out a space where I could belong.
As I got ready for bed, I thought about the future.
I frankly couldn't sleep and so I decided to walk away from my room.
I wanted to feel a breath of fresh air, to at least feel some sort of peace and rest in the night.
But more importantly, I needed to find a way to connect with Kaiden. I simply couldn't force him to feel something he didn't feel, but I was going to show him who I was, show him that I was more than just an omega.
I walked out of my chambers and headed to the pack gardens, I walked quietly in the night as I clung to the piece of clothing I had wrapped around my body.
