What's with her?

Kaiden’s POV

Lilian was acting strange.
I could tell just from only looking at her.

I watched her closely as she sat across from me at the lunch table, her eyes darted everywhere except at me. She kept fidgeting with her fork, pushing food around her plate but not really eating.

Her face was flushed, a deep crimson that seemed to spread from her cheeks to the tips of her ears, and she couldn’t seem to sit still. I’d seen her embarrassed before, even nervous, but this was different.

There was something she wasn’t telling me.

She’d mentioned she had a dream, and I could tell it was more than just strange; it had shaken her.

The way she avoided my gaze, the way her voice trembled when she tried to brush it off—it was clear that whatever she had dreamed about had left her unsettled. And that concerned me.

Lilian was soft but yet quick witted, and though she’d been through a lot, she didn’t usually let things get under her skin like this. Which was why I kept wondering what had her so on edge.

Was it something from her past, something I didn’t know about? Or was it related to the tension that had been building between us lately?

The memory of last night flashed through my mind—our kiss, the way she had looked at me with those deep, searching eyes. There was a connection between us, something powerful that I couldn’t ignore, but I’d pulled back, knowing it wasn’t the right time.

Was she regretting that? Or was it something else entirely? I simply couldn't tell what it was.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching. I looked up to see Jack, my beta, hurrying toward me with a grim expression on his face. My stomach twisted with unease; Jack rarely looked so serious unless it was something bad.

“Alpha,” Jack said as he stopped in front of me, his voice tense. “I need to speak with you. It’s urgent.” He said.

I glanced back at Lilian, who was still lost in her own thoughts, her expression was quite distant.

“Excuse me, Lilian,” I said gently, standing up. “We’ll talk later.” I told her.

She nodded absently, barely acknowledging my departure, and I just knew that something was definitely very wrong somewhere.

Jack and I stepped outside, the cool breeze hit us hard, winter was beginning to come. Outside was way different from the warmth of the dining hall.

“What’s going on, Jack?” I asked, my voice low and controlled. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” I asked.

“I wish it were that simple,” Jack replied, his jaw clenched. “We’ve had a situation—several of our pack guards have been found dead along the wolfsbane territories.” he said.

The words hit me like a punch to the gut.
Dead? This wasn’t just bad news; it was a disaster.

“How many?” I demanded, my voice was sharper than I intended.
“Three so far,” Jack said, his tone was grim. “All of them found within the last hour.

The bodies were discovered by a patrol team that was sent to check on the area.” he said.

I cursed under my breath, my mind racing. Wolfsbane territories were always dangerous, but our guards were trained to handle that.

For three of them to be killed like this… it didn’t make sense.

“Were there any signs of a struggle? Did they see anything before they died?” I asked.

Jack shook his head.
“No signs of a fight, no tracks leading away from the bodies. It’s like they were just… taken out without a chance to defend themselves. And the strange thing is, their wounds don’t look like they were caused by anything natural. No claws, no teeth marks—just deep, precise cuts. Almost surgical.” he said.

The unease that had been simmering in my gut turned into a cold dread. This was no ordinary attack; this was something calculated, deliberate.

“Have the bodies been moved?” I asked, already thinking ahead to the next steps.

“We need to examine them, find out exactly what we’re dealing with.” i said.

“They’ve been brought back to the pack house,” Jack confirmed. “The healer’s already taken a look, but she’s never seen anything like this before. I think you should take a look yourself, Alpha.” he said.

I nodded, my mind now fully focused on the situation at hand. Whatever was happening, it wasn’t just a random act of violence. This was a threat, and it was aimed directly at our pack.

“Gather the senior members,” I ordered. “I want a full report on the security of the wolfsbane territories. If we have a breach, I need to know how it happened and how we can prevent it from happening again.” I said.

“Yes, Alpha,” Jack replied, he was already moving to carry out my orders.

As he walked away, I turned my thoughts back to Lilian for a brief moment. The worry she’d stirred in me was still there, but now it was overshadowed by the immediate threat to our pack.

I couldn’t afford to be distracted now, not this moment, not when lives were at stake. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was troubling Lilian was connected to something larger, something I hadn’t yet uncovered.
I just knew it.

I headed toward the pack house, and while I did, my mind was already working through the possibilities. If there was an enemy out there capable of killing my guards without leaving a trace, then we were dealing with something far more dangerous than we’d anticipated.

And I wasn’t going to let them take another life. Not in my pack. Not in the one in the nearest future. As long as I would be the Alpha of the blue moon pack, I would do everything in my power to protect the members of my pack. Because that is and would be my duty until my very last breath.
