Unfriendly forewarnings

Lilian's POV

I saw Isabel take a forkful of food and feed to Kaiden and I looked away when I saw him smile at her as he chewed. My satisfaction was that Kaiden did not return the favor as he went on eating his food. I silently scoffed as I stuffed my mouth with steak and chewed. I looked away from them and my eyes met with those of Luna Caroline who smiled kindly at me and then she shrugged her shoulders.

Apparently she had been staring at me, watching me watch Kaiden and his lady friend show off their public display of affection while completely ignoring me. I took one last look at Isabel who was smiling contentedly.

I could see hints of satisfaction in her eyes. She had gotten what she wanted and that was to prove that Kaiden felt nothing for me.
I rolled my eyes as I looked away from them and picked up the glass of water beside me.

"You do know that Kaiden now has a mate, Isabel?" I heard the Alpha's voice say and I looked at him. He had his eyes fixed on Isabel. I had thought that he was only eating wordlessly.

I never knew he was watching all these while. I turned to look at Isabel who looked like she was sad. I didn't know her much but the little I had deduced in the short frame of time we had met, I just knew that she was the queen of pretenses.

"Alpha," I heard her say softly. She looked like she was offended. As if the words of the Alpha had struck a chord. "I was only...." She trailed.

"She was only feeding me father," I heard Kaiden say and I looked at him. He was defending Isabel in the presence of his family but he would speak so condescendingly to me even though his parents would disapprove of it.

"I see no harm in that." Kaiden said.
I was silent the whole time but when I looked at Isabel, I saw that she was sneering at me. As if I was an enemy.

No doubt she was laying her claim on him. Like he was some sort of possession or something or like he belonged to her. I for one wasn't bothered, I shouldn't be. He was nothing to me. He had said the same thing to me too.

The Luna dropped her cutlery loudly as a way of cutting through the thick tension.
"Now, now," she said. "Why don't we go on ahead and enjoy the meal in peace, hmm?" She suggested as she glanced between her husband and her son.

There was no denying the fact that this wasn't the first time this was happening. Or so I thought. These could be baseless assumptions for all I knew.

Kaiden and the Alpha returned back to their meals and the room fell silent once again, save for the loudly clanging of cutleries against ceramic dishes and the clinking of rings on wine glasses.

Soon, dinner was over. The Alpha and the Luna were the first to leave the table and as soon as Kaiden saw that his parents had left the dinner room, he turned on his heels and left while his minion, Isabel followed him. I scoffed as I watched them go.

They were so unbelievable. Why didn't he get mated to her then, if they were so inseparable?

Left alone at the table, I picked up my wine glass and took a large sip of the contents in the glass, emptying it in the process. I placed the glass back on the table and got up on my feet and left the room.

The moment I turned in the direction to my bed chambers, I was almost frightened by the sight of who I saw waiting for me.

It was Isabel who stood there, waiting for me. She had her arms folded over her chest as she waited for me. She seemed to look impatient.

"Well well,"she said when she saw me approach. "I had actually thought that I would have to wait until eternity before you would come out of there. How long does it take you to eat a plate of food?" She asked in a harsh voice but I chose to ignore that. I didn't want to have to face her.

At least not yet. I wasn't accustomed to the kind of person she was yet and so I wouldn't know what ticked her bomb.

"I'm talking to you." She said to me when she saw me walking past her.

Wasn't she supposed to be with Kaiden in his study or something? Why was she pestering me?

"What is it?" I asked her as I tried my hardest to not roll my eyes at how ridiculous she was being. What was she trying to do, warning me off of my mate or something? I wondered as I waited for her to get on with her business.

"Since you are new here," she spoke to me in a manner that looked like one she used in speaking with her maids. "I am going to let that slide but pray that it doesn't happen again." She said to me and I tilted my head as I tried to get a good grasp of what she was talking about.

Shit.

I swore inside of me.
"What are you saying?" I asked her as I watched her with a bored expression on my face.

"I'm talking about Kaiden." She said, I raised a brow at that. "He's my best friend you see, and I would not entertain you being rude to him or anyone at all. He deserves to be worshiped." She said and this time, I couldn't resist the strong urge to roll my eyes and I did just that.

What the heck was this woman saying?

"What do you mean?" I asked her, you know, just for final clarification. "But he is my mate and what happens between the both of us is none of your business." I told her but she rolled her eyes as she tried to conceal the flash of anger that I saw cross her face.

"Prince Kaiden may be your mate or whatever," she said as she stepped closer to me until she was practically in my face. "But he is not in your class. You should really count yourself lucky to be called his mate and just be content with that.

He doesn't like you anyway."she told me straight to my face.
