The hunt

Kaiden's POV

The next day I was carrying out my duty as Alpha. As part of the duty, I was to lead the pack members on a hunting spree.

Everyone seemed to be okay with the idea. The training had been intense and no non-warrior was allowed to be found around the vicinity.

The pack members and warriors were responding positively to the training and drillings.

Satisfied with all of their responses, I nodded my head and walked away.

I was walking to my chambers to grab my weapons before heading to the stables for my horse when I saw Lilian.

What was she doing out? It was dangerous out here. She was in no position to defend herself if she was faced with any danger whatsoever.

"What are you doing out here?" I asked her as she watched me, wearing the same long and flowing floral dress from earlier.

"I came to see you." She spoke in a worried voice. I could see that she was genuinely worried about me. But I was fine. She should be worried about herself and not me.

"Now you have seen me," I said, trying my hardest to not sound like her worries had softened a spot in my heart. "Go back into your chambers and lock up the doors." I instructed but she still stood there.

"Lilian?" I questioned getting riled up. It was still dangerous at the moment as we didn't know who the enemy could be. The next thing and she was hugging me so tightly.

"Please be safe." She said in a plea. "I would not know how to forgive myself if anything happened to you." She said and I inwardly smiled at that.

Then catching myself, I frowned and cleared my throat detaching myself from any sentiments.

"When have I never been safe?" I asked rhetorically. "I am good at two things, taking on dangerous assignments and delivering them efficiently.

Safety is only one of the benefits." I heard myself joking and she chuckled at that.

The sound of her chuckling sounded pleasant to the ear. I allowed myself to indulge in her for a little bit.

Lilian was fast becoming my favorite person.

"I will be fine." I reassured. "I always have been." I reminded her, in case she had forgotten.

She nodded her head and I could see that she was trying to believe my words.

"Then," she said in an unsure voice. "Can I come?" She asked and I wanted to laugh at that.

Lilian was practically the weakest I knew about. She couldn't even hurt a fly. She was cute and all but she wielded no strength.

Sending her off on such a heinous mission was suicidal.

"You wouldn't." I said smiling at her and she nodded again. She must have known that I would refuse.

I saw that she wanted to say something again but held her peace and my interest was piqued but I didn't dwell on that.

She was probably still trying to persuade me to let her continue on the suicide mission that was coming along with us.

Not only was she going to be a threat to herself but she was also going to be a threat to me as well.

I would be too distracted trying to protect her that I would not be able to catch the game we were embarking on or find out vital signs and information about them.

"Be safe." She said to me and I nodded at that. She had every right to care about my whereabouts even though I didn't want that.

It made me wonder why I didn't want her to bother about me.

She soon turned and left and I watched her go. Then I let out a sigh and headed for the stables where my horse was.

I spotted my black horse and I went to it. I let out the threshold and got into it's pen. I brushed its hair fondly as I prepared it for the ride.

"We're going game hunting buddy." I informed it like it could hear me. I mean I was a werewolf, and I understood the English I spoke clearly.

It seemed as if the horse heard me because it responded with a deep grunt. I tapped it fondly and walked to the gathering ground where the rest of the warrior pack guards were preparing.

I searched around but there was no sign of my beta. I wondered where he had gone.

He usually came around and even volunteered to go with me to hunt but now it seemed like he was nowhere to be found. I had messed up. How could I think of Lilian at that point? It was definitely a nut job.

........
Few moments had passed and my men and I were trudging through the forest of the wolfsbane area, we were searching frantically while making ourselves and our presence unnoticed.

We soon got to a spot and I raised my left hand in a closed fist and signified that we should all halt there.

They all obeyed my command and came to a stop right behind me. No one uttered a word.

I gave the signal and everyone got down from their horses, for those who were on horses while those who were on foot prepared themselves for the next line of action.

I got down from the horse myself and signaled for everyone to quietly follow my lead.

We moved on foot quietly. We all trudged towards the mouth of the wolfsbane.

Our ears are on high alert. Our senses heightened. I could hear every single sound in the forest.

The chirping of birds on the trees, the crawling of every forest inhabitant. I could hear the sounds of everything including those of my feet as we moved.

I heard a sound and raised my hand up for my men to halt again. I listened in. Everywhere was silent. I could swear that I had heard a sound.

I could even perceive an unfamiliar presence. We all waited. From their scent, they weren't far away.

I couldn't tell if they were just one or more than one person. I couldn't tell if they were trying to attack us or they were trying to get away.

But I just knew that someone or something was lurking in the shadows.

We all waited as we stood, encroached in our positions and waited for the slightest move to dive in.

The second they made another sound and we would dive in for the kill.

I eyed my men as I inclined my ears and waited not so patiently.
