Lucy

She stared at me for a few moments. “I have given you a gift, and if you think you will not accept it with grace, you will only make it more difficult for yourself.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Don’t be a fool, Lucy. You only have power because I have allowed it.”
“Then take it.”
Her eyes widened. She looked as if she hadn’t expected me to say that. Then her expression changed to something that should have seemed maternal, but it only reminded me of my adoptive mother right before she wanted to take what little extra money I had made.
It’s for the family.
You owe us for taking care of you all this time.
What do you know about how much things cost?
“You’ve allowed those witches to convince you that you have power. You have no power. It’s not your place to have power,” she shook her head. “You’ll be so much happier with your alphas. Don’t you want that? To be happy?”
My gut churned. “You… You don’t care about me being happy.”
“Of course, I do,” she said. “Do you think I would have led them to you if I didn’t? Think about how good it felt. You enjoyed it, didn’t you?”
My stomach lurched, and I stepped back from her. “It doesn’t matter.”
“Of course, it matters. You enjoyed it. All this talk about—”
“I didn’t want it.”
She cocked an eyebrow, and I heard myself moaning. My whole body went cold as I tried not to turn to look at the memory she was pulling up. I felt Tony’s hands on my hips. Matt’s hand was in my hair as Tony thrust into me, and I moaned at every push. Pleasure rocketed and spiraled through me. My heart raced even as I felt sick.
“You feel so good, Lucy,” Tony gasped, leaning over me, pressing me into the mattress.
“Open your mouth.”
I gagged. I could taste Matt’s skin. I didn’t remember this. I didn’t want to remember this.
“Stop it.”
“It certainly sounds like you enjoyed it.”
I wailed and moaned, muffled by Matt thrusting into my mouth. I could feel him on my tongue and shuddered. I didn’t even remember this, but my body did. A low throbbing heat pooled between my legs. My stomach lurched. She grabbed me and turned me.
“Look and tell me it doesn’t matter.”
Time seemed to stop as I saw myself between them. My face was flushed. My eyes were open as I tore away from Matt and sucked in a breath. Then, I met my own eyes in the dream, and that same hollow emptiness stared back at me.
I didn’t remember it because my mind wasn’t there.
“I didn’t want it.”
“Of course, you did—”
“Get off of me!” I cried, tearing away from her. I shoved her away from me, glaring down at her. “Watch. Y-You just watch. I’m not going back there. I’m not going. I’ll kill myself before I go back.”
She sneered. “You aren’t strong enough to kill yourself.”
“Maybe,” I gasped, my jaw trembling and my eyes filling with tears. “Maybe I’m not, but… But I’m brave enough to search for a way out.”
She narrowed her eyes. Her eyes flashed red.
“And I’m going to find it, and I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be free, and your plans are going to fail.”
“You don’t know what you’re saying—”
“I know enough!” I yelled. “If it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to escape you, and I’ll help Duke and everyone else too.”
She reached for me. Lightning crashed over us, and I shoved her away from me. She stumbled back, gasping in shocked as the wing picked up. She covered her eyes as I glared at her.
“Get out,” I said.
“Lucy—”
“Get out!”
My voice echoed, and suddenly, she was gone. The wolf was gone. The forest was gone, and a lovely sunset over the ocean replaced it. I sat at the edge of the water. The heat of the air wrapped around me as I felt exhaustion pulling at me. My heart was still racing with fear.
I meant every word, but what would happen next?

The morning came and I headed to class. Instead of the Moving Ring, I let Stacy take me as I just needed a little more time to get my head on straight. At least I was going to the coven campus. Riley was in the car and she beamed at me.
“Morning. I know this is a little impromptu, but after speaking with Professor Whitetower, I found out that you ran into Peter of the Black Moon Pack?”
I nodded. “At the museum… Is… Is there something wrong?”
“Just covering all the bases. Can you tell me what happened?”
I nodded and told her about the spear and everything Peter said. Nothing really felt out of the ordinary. He seemed pretty okay, even if there was something a little unnerving about him. He at least didn’t give me the same feelings the twins did.
“There is something else,” I said, thinking about it. “Uhm, well, I don’t know how to put this exactly, but I could feel Peter at the museum. And then, when the-they showed up at Helping Hands, I could… feel them too, I guess. I’m not sure what it means.”
Riley placed a hand on mine and squeezed. “If you want to be scanned again, we will. We’ll scan you as many times as you want, but I will say that your magical senses are being awakened with all the time you’re spending around supernatural people. We can usually sense each other when we’re around. You might be a little more sensitive to werewolf presences.”
I licked my lips and nodded. “That’s all?”
“I think so, but we can always scan you again to be sure.”
I nodded. “I’ll think about it. Thanks, Riley.”
I slipped out of the car and took a deep breath before heading into the campus. As I made my way to the right room, my mind kept turning back to my dream. My anxiety hadn’t gone away, but I felt better than I had last night. Something had changed. The black wolf wasn’t there, but I had gotten her to go away all on my own. That had to be a good thing, right?
“You look pensive. You okay?”
I looked up and gasped at seeing Duke. He had a tumbler in his hand, but his eyes were dark from lack of sleep. He looked exhausted.
“Are you okay? You look…”
His lips twitched. “I got another moonlight visit, is all.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked. “I… I got a visit too.”
He shook his head and wrapped an arm around my shoulder. “I’ll be alright. There’s some sort of potion in here that’s supposed to get me through until someone comes to pour me into the back of a truck and take me back.”
I chuckled. “How are things at Blood Moon?”
He nodded. “Good. Homey. David’s…Well, David.”
I laughed. “I know what you mean. Have you been eating well? You’re in new clothes again.”
“I think Blue is rage shopping,” he said.
“Who’s Blue?”
“Amos’ wife,” he frowned. “Amos is David’s beta, he used to work for his father, I think, and Blue is the Blood Moon Estate manager. She’s the one who makes sure all the beds are made, the food is cooked, and wayward children eat enough.”
“I’m glad they’re taking care of you.”
“And you?” Duke asked. “How are things in Lucyland? Aside from the unwanted visitor? You feeling better than yesterday?”
I nodded and stopped in front of the door. “I know you said you didn’t want to talk about it, but something happened last night. I… I’m not sure how, but I made her go away.”
His eyes widened. “What?”
“The black wolf didn’t come. We argued. She… showed me some things that I had forgotten, and I don’t know how, but I told her to go away. I told her that I wasn’t going to do what she wanted.” I licked my lips. “I don’t know if that means she’ll be gone forever, but she left.”
He cheered softly. “You told that bitch to leave you alone, and she listened. That’s fucking awesome. Maybe Triton was wrong. Maybe you’re a warrior, and we’re just the cheering squad.”
I shook my head. “I doubt that… I still don’t know how to cast a spell.”
“You’ll get there,” he said. “That restraint is probably holding you back more than you think.”
I stopped. “Do you think that me being able to push her out means that it’s loosening or something?”
His eyes lit up. “We should ask Luke as soon as we can, but if it is, I hope she comes back so you can tell her to go fuck herself again.”
