Lucy
The fluttering feeling followed me all the way through dinner. I could feel us getting closer, slipping further into the romantic mood that was around us. We laughed, leaving the restaurant into the warm air of the night.
He drew me close, waltzing me slowly on the sidewalk. My face started to warm as I realized that people were watching us.
"Ready to head back, or can I entice you with a little more time with me?"
I smiled. "Only if... we're not waltzing in the middle of the sidewalk."
He twirled me and kept hold of my hand, leading me down the street at a leisurely pace through the bustling city. The restaurants and shops were alive with people, the intoxicating scent of street food filling the night.
As we walked hand in hand, our laughter and conversations floated in the warm night air. We paused at a small café for something warm to beat the chill. The gentle hum of conversation around us was a soothing backdrop.
We'd ordered and moved off to the side when our peaceful moment was disrupted when a woman, clearly a werewolf, suddenly approached us. Her eyes bore into me, filled with accusation and disdain as they flashed.
"You!" she spat out, her voice a low growl. "You're that disgrace to the Moon Goddess, aren't you? Lucy Graves."
My eyes widened at her. David stepped between us before she had even gotten close.
"Not only have you betrayed the Blue Moon pack, but now you're running around with this werewolf-- the Blood Moon Alpha? Don't you have any shame?"
David bristled in front of me, ready to say something, but there was something in her eyes, something about her presence that felt familiar.
Then, her eyes glinted with moonlight, and I knew who was really talking to me.
"Selene," I said with a calm yet stern voice. "Leave me alone."
David turned his head slightly and nudged me a little further behind him. She seemed taken aback for a moment, but her anger flared.
"You think you can command me? I'll remind you of your place!"
A few patrons at nearby tables started to notice the escalating confrontation and looked nervous. They started to step away, but I didn't move. I could feel David ready to fight, but I wasn't going to be afraid of her. She wasn't going to get away with attacking me any longer, no matter whose face she wore.
"I don't care what you think," I said. "And my name isn't Graves. Leave me alone."
She sneered, not willing to accept this. "You can talk all you want, but I know who you really are. I know what you really are."
She smirked. The heat of her expression turned cool and sly.
"I wonder how long he'll stand in your defense when he finds out what you really are. Whore."
"How fucking--"
"The way you moaned and gasped with the twins? I don't know what you've been telling people, but it's all a lie."
My face burned with embarrassment. I could feel the frustration welling up inside me. People gasped around us. The words were almost stuck in my throat. She turned and laughed. The laughter that bubbled from her lips sent shivers down my spine.
"You can stand there and play innocent, but you enjoyed it. You can--"
With a tight grip on my emotions, I looked into the woman's eyes. I felt a surge of power escape me as I glared at her. She gasped and flinched as if it had hit her.
"You know nothing about me," I said. "And you can tell your lackeys that I'm never going back to Blue Moon, and you? When I find a way to get rid of you permanently, it'll be me laughing. And everyone will know the truth about you, Selene."
Her eyes widened, and she scowled at me. Meeting my gaze."You think you have the power?"
I narrowed my eyes at her. "I think... you know I do."
She flinched back and went pale.
"Why else would you keep harassing me?" I glared at her, searching her face. "I must terrify you."
She snarled. "Watch your mouth,"
"You first," David said, his voice shaking the air. "Leave."
The woman's eyes narrowed at David's words, and her defiance remained strong. But for a moment, the anger left her eyes. In its place was a sly, mocking look.
"We'll see," she said. "Your ancestor learned the hard way... I suppose I'll have to teach his descendants too."
She turned slowly, gliding away with a soft hum. She cast one last look over her shoulder at me and smirked.
This isn't over.
I glared back at her. No, it isn't.
Then, she vanished.
I looked up at David. My heart was racing. He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead.
"She's a real piece of work in person," he said. "Let's get our drinks and go."
I bit my lip and held onto him. He frowned, looking at me.
"David... about what she said."
He lowered his face until our lips brushed against each other. "Why would I listen to an evil witch?"
I met his gaze. He kissed me briefly, stealing my breath away.
"When you want to talk about it, we will, but not because that evil witch decided to try and ruin our evening."
He turned and grabbed our drinks, offering me my cup. "Okay?"
I nodded, thankful for his understanding. He wrapped his arm around me, and we walked out of the cafe back towards the parking lot where he'd left his car. As we left behind the cafe, a sense of unease still hung in the air. My lips still tingled from the press of his mouth against mine. He helped me into the car and then climbed behind the wheel with a deep sigh. My heart was pounding, though. He took my hand after he cranked up the car.
"You don't have to worry about her," he said.
"Duke mentioned that... something happened when you were in training with Trent... did it have something to do with Selene?"
"She was in my vision. Not my dreams," he said and pulled out of the parking lot. He navigated through the city's winding streets.
"She was a real piece of work then, too, but I'm on to her game now."
He sped through an intersection just as a light turned red and kept looking back in the rearview mirror.
"What's wrong?"
He clenched his jaw. "We're being followed."
I looked back. My heart started to racing. "For how long?"
"Probably since the parking lot." He clenched his jaw. "That little display was just a ploy to keep us there long enough to get a tail on us."
He sighed. "I need you to trust me."
"I do."
He smiled. "Good to hear."
He sped up. I felt the wash of magic over the car as he took a sharp turn. My heart lurched as we swung around a corner.
"Alpha?" An Escort member said through the car's stereo system. "What's your plan?"
"Shake them if we can... Use force if necessary."
I bit my lip and pressed myself back into my seat. I saw Escort vehicles closing in around us, putting distance between us and whoever was following us, but the people trailing us weren't deterred. It seemed like there were more of them than David thought.
David took sharp turns, trying to shake our pursuers. The tension in the car grew with each twist and turn. I reached for my phone, ready to make another call if needed, but I wasn't even sure who to call.
The Escort was doing its best.
"Why would they be trying to follow us?"
"To figure out where the Estate is," he said. "Blood Moon or White Moon."
He shifted gears and took us down another street.
"It's n
"It's not just on a map?"
He laughed. "I hope not. In all seriousness, they're protected. The same is true of Blue Moon."
He turned again. The chase continued through the city. I could feel David's determination to protect me, his gaze never leaving the road. He kept cursing.
"They're smart. They must have eyes everywhere..." He bit his lip. "It seems like Trent was right."
"About what?"
"Selene's powers..." He set his jaw. He called the Escort again. "Hey, change of plans. We're going to take a portal to somewhere with some more open roads. Maybe a human city."
"Human city? Any in mind?"
He smirked. "Maybe one inside of a dragon territory."
He snorted. "You're terrible. On it."
He glanced at me. "We'll be going off-road probably. Close your eyes if it gets to be too much."
I nodded. Then, the sound of gunfire pierced the air, and the staccato of bullets striking the car's exterior sent shivers down my spine. I huddled in my seat, trying to shield myself as the glass windows began to crack under the relentless assault.
